ACL it is. Thanks for all advice *slap hands*... I will now start preparing my body for moonshines chicken fried steak.
Also, I haven't seen Hill's cafe mentioned at all but their burger is probably the best I've had in Austin
One of my best friends lives there now, so I've been several times in the past couple of years. Awesome, awesome place.
I love that place. If you like Texas country music or red dirt music Hills Cafe gets some good acts and has weekly shows.
I've been to several festivals and it is one of the nicest/cleanest ones I've experienced. There isn't overnight camping so you don't have the terrible port-o-potties and they had plenty of tents set up so you don't have to wait in long lines for booze.
Anything of note to do on the 4th of July? I'll be in town the 30th to the 5th for a convention. staying at the Sheraton at the Capitol, hope that location is decent. Is there a decent taxi structure downtown? I can see myself getting liquored up and needing a cab pretty often. Just looked and this dude is at Stubb's the 3rd, I may just have to partake http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mC2Hv8llAVg
That's easy walking distance to downtown bars. Cabs and those bike cabs are everywhere. Don't listen to locals and hit up the dirty 6 at least once if you've never been there. Once is really all you need.
4th of July there is a big firework and symphony production on town lake next to downtown. Pretty cool to check out and you are right by all the bars.
You can spend all day just walking around downtown and by the river and have a great time. You may want to take a cab over to South Congress if you want to check out some good restraunts and shops. The Sheraton has a nice pool area as well. 2nd st through 5th are more of the local laid back scene. 6th is for throwing down. http://www.austin360.com/ good site for music and events.
Awesome, thanks man, I know I want to check out campus a bit, and it sounds like 6th is a must even just to see the shit-show. I may have friend with me who loves Austin so she may act as a defacto tour guide, but if she ends up bailing I'd like to have an idea what to do with my time. Sounds like I'll be doing a lot of walking around and sweating no matter what. I hate heat.
Oh there will be sweat. On the plus side though everyone is sweating their asses off too so it's no big deal. Campus is really nice. I went to Arkansas and was completely blown away by UT's campus. Guadalupe st is really nice. Lots of nice shops and some cool places to eat.
Good deal, I'm excited to hear there are a lot of patios/decks at bars and restaurants I love a good outdoor day/evening drink.
Pretty much everywhere has an outside area to drink. It's Texas so day drinking is encouraged. The Alamo Drafthouse on 6th is a pretty cool experience as well.
I keep reading about the Drafthouse, I really want to make time to check it out, but not sure if I'll be able to.
Draughthouse is the spelling. It's great, but just a really cool neighborhood place. It's not exotic or anything. 42/43rd and Medical. Unless you're talking Alamo Drafthouse. Also great, but a movie place.
I meant the Alamo drafthouse on 6th st. It's a really a cool experience. A big bowl of popcorn and an Austin Amber makes for a good experience. You just sit back and order what you want and they bring it to you. You also don't have kids running around or people on cell phones or talking at all there. Plus they have quote-a-longs for certain movies sometimes.
Im not going to say every good thing to do in austin has been mentioned, but everything has been mentioned is
Alamo Drafthouse is what I was referring to, we have nothing like it up here (Michigan) for some reason.
I'm a fan, too, but Draughthouse was closer to my apartment and has/had a little more room. I always liked drinking at Shoal Creek Saloon, but it's not particularly good food.
Good thread. I will be going to Austin for a few days in September to visit my friend who will have just started grad school at UT. Flying out there to stay with him for a few days before driving to College Station for the UF - A&M game Sept 8th. Any other additional suggestions from those with experience? I've read through and seems to be a solid selection. I heard about Moonshine when looking up some things to do in Austin and, coupled with the reviews in this thread, definitely gonna have to make a stop there.
moonshine is a bit trendy/upscale but a nice spot if you're just coming in and cant go to too many places. buffalo meatloaf is good. I think ive been twice. there are enough of us residents/former residents to give plenty of good advice.
Trying to make a decision, Salt Lick, or the run up to Lockhart to try Blacks/Smittys/Kreuz? I think I have time to wait and will do Franklin on Sunday morning, but Tuesday I think we are going to adventure out and head to one of the above.
I would do lockhart probably. j mueller is another excellent option in town though and doesnt get near the line franklin does(but they do sell out by 1 or so on the weekends).
my buddy just texted me about Mueller this AM, I was yet to hear of it, how far is it from the Capitol, etc?
I'm just going to throw this in here, as this thread is extremely relevant to my interests. Been to Austin twice and loved it. Currently living and working in Tampa, but desperately need a change of scenery and have been heavily considering Austin (Tampa sucks). I have a degree in Hospitality Management, minor in marketing and work for an ad agency/marketing firm currently. Don't really know what I want to do with my life, but I know I don't want to be stuck at a desk all day like I currently am. I haven't even started looking (living at home paying down my student loan right now), but I wanted to throw out a line to see if you guys had any suggestions of places or businesses to look for work in the city. I'll do anything, honestly..I'm a blank canvas ready to be painted. Any help would be greatly appreciated Austin TMB brethren.
Well, the job market in Austin is pretty weird. The #1 and #2 employers are the state and UT, which isn't all that attractive if you're looking to find fulfillment in your work. Private sector market is....in flux. Tech is of course significant here. Hospitality would actually help you....we have a half dozen or so new high-rise hotels going up in the next few years. Agency experience is good....we've got hundreds of those and more popping up every day.
Hospitality/Service Industry is huge here now. Ive had trouble entering into job market (adv grad with minor in Bus). I wouldn't even consider moving here unless you had a job. Austin cranks out some 8K grads a year, most of whom who dont want to leave Austin. This drives salaries down, and makes it harder to get a job because of the near infinite labor pool.
'Preciate it fsugrad99 and Det. Frank Bullitt. Looks like I need to expand my list of destinations to find a job! Austin is just so damn tempting.
Most people I know in Austin have shitty jobs to be honest with you. Unless you are smart and going into tech, everyone that stayed in town had trouble finding good jobs.
