My friend has a good job there, but it's because he worked for a tech startup that let him move wherever he wanted and he chose Austin. Now, he's working for another one.
had brisket (probably not good brisket) but never a rib, almost bought some for my smoker the other day actually, so I'm looking forward to trying that.
Guys, I appreciate all of your help so far, I get in tomorrow at 3pm, thinking about hitting Stubb's for dinner and then wandering around on a Saturday night to get a feel for stuff, and then getting up on Sunday and going to Franklin to buy a couple of pounds of meat to store in my room. They open at 11, any suggestion on what time I need to get there to get what I want before they sell out? would 10am do it? Also if any of you guys are out on Saturday pm me and I'll get you my number, I'll buy you a beer somewhere for your help.
I think the line at Franklin will start forming around 9:00 but you should be good to get food if you get there at 10:00. Honestly I haven't been in about a year after the lines got so bad. Det. Frank Bullitt has been fairly recently he should be able to help. Stubbs is more a great music venue than it is restaurant FYI. But it is right next to your hotel and close to the action.
That was my thought, if I can get a decent meal I'll be happy, it looks like a good gateway/starting point for a trip down to 6th street. I'll be up, so I may saunter over to Franklin closer to 9, thanks for the heads up.
Pretty happy, we got a good hotel, each state has a bunch of representatives at the convention and Michigan got lucky with the hotel assignment, a lot of people are quite far from downtown and will have to bus/commute in for everything.
That's what I thought. Yeah it's pretty nice. Not sure if it's been mentioned but Second Bar + Kitchen is slap yo mama good. It's on 2nd st and Congress. The buffalo fried pickles are beyond amazing.
Other good places in that area: Lambert's - different take on BBQ Max's Wine Bar - An egg sandwich as big as your face
Your hotel is literally right next to Serranos if you wanted to get fajitas/Mexican and some margs too. Food isn't amazing or anything though.
I like it. Just called the hotel to adjust my reservation, Kelly, who answered the phone, did not have a "Texas" accent. I was disappointed.
A lot of people in Austin don't. You can tell by looking at them who is going to have one and who isn't. I'm from Arkansas though so maybe I just don't notice it unless it's a really thick accent.
If you are just scoping things out on Saturday then go to the Driskill Hotel Bar on Sixth Street for a drink. Place is probably what most people think of when you think Texas Oil Money.
Driskill always has music on the weekends too around 9:00. Just looked and this Saturday are two people that have played with George Strait and George Jones.
great suggestions guys, all of the places listed above look awesome. I have a distinct feeling I'll come back a little heavier. I'll check out the Driskill, I enjoy stopping in for one drink and then moving on, so I'll be sure to make that a stop.
good friend of mine is one of the front desk managers at that sheraton. nice place. also I think (not sure) if you want enough meat you can call ahead your order at franklin and pick it up.
I'll make sure to tell every employee "kezarmyaj from the internet says hi" until I get a hit. Pretty happy with the Sheraton considering it was assigned and I didn't choose it, I am a little jealous though, a couple states were assigned the Driskill, seems like that would have been bad ass. Good stuff, I will check that out
Gotcha. My friend has a place at the Landing so we're gonna float the comal during the day and go to the show that night.
id get there slightly before 10 (maybe another half hour) if you can. youll still get food, but if your just trying to get plenty to take home, coming a little earlier will save you some time (esp on the weekend) take a fold out chair and the newspaper but it will be worth it.
OH HOLY SHIT at Franklin, just finished my feast. Had Stubb's last night and honestly it was very good, but Franklin was unreal, got there at 9:30 and I was about 25 in line, so I got my choice of what I wanted, so I made a sampler. The brisket, easily the best I have ever had, no other words The ribs, Just fantastic, they are different than what I am used to but still insanely good, again maybe the best I have ever had The pulled pork, very good - I will have more if it later but I got full on the first too The Sausage, haven't tried it yet....need a nap and reset, but it will be my dinner. I was impressed that even with the success of the place and his tv gig Aaron Franklin was there actually cutting and serving the meat, and interacting with the crowd, pretty cool to see. Didn't make it 6th street last night ended up just hitting the sack, going to try to make it down there tonight. So far, Austin, I like you.
Shit, Turkey I skipped because I figured it could only be "so good". Been to sixth, have a hospitality room to hit, followed by a return to 6th, I'm sold.
Did Casino El Camino for a burger, wings, and a schlitz, awesome. Ran out to Salt Lick for lunch today, again, awesome. Folks I'm with want pizza tonight, whats the best around downtown, Hoboken pies looks like a winner (and close as hell), anything else? btw, 6th street last night was fun as shit...at 27 I did feel a bit old however. Leave tomorrow at 8am, I dread it. I will be back when ND plays down here, no doubt about that.
Pizza, do you have a rental car? Salvation Pizza is great. Rounders is good too. Haven't tried Hoboken but I bet others here know pizza better than I do. Glad you enjoyed Austin, sounds like you did it right.
Home Slice Pizza, too. Can't remember if any of those places do delivery. Just using the top ranked places on Yelp will probably serve you well.
we have a car, but walking is preferred, pretty lit already, just stopped in my room to shower and figured I'd ask. I'll check yelp as well, it's done well for me already, it showed me CEC.
Casino El Camino is a great place. You get a different crowd in there but I enjoy it, great burgers and the cook is a burger nazi.
