I lived where WillieHuff lives now at The Monarch on west 5th for almost 2 years. Loved it but depends on your taste in places to live. A lot of downtown you're getting that highrise life and feels like you're living in a hotel (a really nice hotel) but it doesn't "feel like a home" if that makes any sense. If you're determined to live in the actual downtown-downtown - start at Lamar and go east to 35 or maybe a .5 mile east of 35. and from Lady bird lake go north to 7th street. That rectangle area is where you'll do all of your going out IMO and tons of housing options. The mid-20s female is probably your target market for going out DT so her input is probably more valuable than you think. 23-30 year old girls make up most of the DT night life population. Other options that are ~1 mile or less from the downtown bar areas that aren't "downtown" are South Lamar, South 1st, South Congress, East Riverside (just east of 35), and Rainey Street. Probably that order goes from least to most expensive along the lines of (the basic 1b1b) $1600 SLamar to Rainey being $2100 when I was looking mid 2017. Most in actual downtown are $2100+ these listed are all South Lamar: You're looking at the three places that surround my apartment... welcome to the hood. I resigned at Townhollow through Dec'19. It's the lone oldschool apt in the middle of the boutique box apartments you listed. But for $1225/mo and pretty sure all those are $1800+. Favorite area in Austin and they keep adding shit to the Lamar Union plaza to make it better. Lived at Gibson Flats my first 2.5 years here. It was aiight but not worth the price and I was only paying $1375 because I was like the 7th lease that signed and kept the rate the whole time. After I didn't renew my 580ish sqft hallway of an apt went to 1525.
couple of my best friends are from georgetown and grew up with a guy that played golf at OU. met him at 1st thursday 2 months ago and is fresh out of divorce and was talking about needing to get back in the dating game. real cool dude and apparently just bought a place at one of the lakeside apartments maybe North Shore. Also is a member at spanish oaks and him and my old roommate played with nick watney a few weeks ago. Need zero help getting back into the game there... shit help the rest of us out.
I love the monarch but none of those places are cheap. Monarch is probably the best bang for the buck of the market district high-rises and I pay 3100 for a 2br 1500sq ft apartment
There are some older but updated apartments throughout the east side of Clarksville that are a lot cheaper but still walkable to the west side of downtown.
Got real lucky and got in for $100 Pros are asking $175. Worth every cent to profess my undying love to Lauren Mayberry
That’s pretty funny about Odesza cancelling just bc of the reason... if the rumor is true they did it bc they couldn’t fit the light setup on Stubbs stage. MFers you didn’t realize that until the fuckin day of the show stage is a giant football. Durand Jones > Sylvan Esso was badass last night. Honestly didn’t know much ab SE going into the show outside of their main 3-4 ones they were damn good for just 2 people on stage. After a couple songs I told my date the same thing as with BBriggs I bet she kills it in the lesbian game and she’s goes “have you not looked around? 80% of the crowd is girls and most of them are couples” She was absolutely right it was pretty damn funny.
hood on that good justice is a rave party. odesza is a show. Manchester Orchestra was a meh late night show at emos. you got 2 guitars. in 15 songs there were ZERO guitar solos. none. fucking none. you're a rock band what the hell. you don't need two guys playing the same power chord with a fuckton of distortion. Sombody play a fuckin solo. Frankly... I'm disappointed.
also heard from everyone that was there and saw a lot of IG stories that the crowd singing along with lil wayne was louder than he was on the speakers. sounds about right....
Wayne was wayyy too quiet smh. Fire your audio peoples Justice was a last second call. Abandoned the silent disco line and walked over Shit was Flames
Posted up at Un Bar Lievable on Rainey Saturday during the UT and LSU/Georgia games then we met up with the rest of the party who went to the UT game on dirty 6th. If you are just out of college and don't move to Austin for a couple of years, you are doing it wrong IMO. The amount of talent is unreal.
I had a great college experience but at the time, a lot of the cool stuff was in Scottsdale. I haven’t been to Tempe in like 5 years so it might be better now but I loved Austin. People are more into sports than at ASU.
I swear not a single forecast I saw called for this much rain today, and now they are saying it's pretty much today repeating all week?
I swear every year its hot as fuck at ACL and then the second the last artist is off stage they are like "ok bring in the winter weather!"
Cuffing Season noun (1) \ Definition During the Fall and Winter months people who would normally rather be single or promiscuous find themselves along with the rest of the world desiring to be "Cuffed" or tied down by a serious relationship. The cold weather and prolonged indoor activity causes girls to become lonely and desperate to be cuffed.
You are old 43 year old visiting for this weekend with your wife. Any edits you would make to the list below? I combined some other lists posted here. Thanks, gents. ---- Definitely hit up Town Lake in addition to the festival and all the other activities you mentioned. You can go kayaking, paddle boating, and its just a relaxing experience overall and has great views of Austin. I'm also surprised no one has mentioned Mt. Bonnell, which is a must see. Best views of the multi-million dollar homes in the hill country from up there. I'll give you a lot of food and drink suggestions since you'll be there a while. 1. 6th Street - East (dirty) 6th is where all the college bars are but West 6th is where I like to go when I'm in town. Little less of a scene and better bars/lounges overall. 2. Abel's on the Lake - Next to Hula Hut and probably where you should go instead in my humblest. Better food and drink and less wait usually. 3. Salt Lick - Is good bbq, but Stubb's downtown is a plenty fine backup option if you want to stay close. 4. Moonshine Cafe - Good luck getting in the weekend of the festival but if you do, it's a treat. Upscale and trendy comfort food, just really good. 5. Bess Bistro - Sandra Bullock's restaurant. Similar to Moonshine so if you can't get in there, go here. 6. Home Slice - Best pizza in Austin. On South Congress which is a really cool street. 7. South Congress Cafe - Across the street from Home Slice. I recommend going there for brunch. 8. Kerbey Lane - Open 24 hours. Amazing pancakes. 9. Taco Deli or Torchy's - Both have better breakfast taco's than Juan in a Million and are less touristy 10. Alamo Drafthouse - One of the coolest things to do in the city. It's a local movie theater where you can also order awesome food and they bring it right to your seat. They also have a full bar. Definitely make a night out of that if you have the time. 11. Fonda San Miguel - Great mexican food. Order the queso with chorizo and thank me later. 12. Paggi House - A bit trendier than South Congress Cafe but they also do an amazing buffet brunch. Chicken and waffles are incredible 13. Whole Foods - Trust me it's worth the trip. Biggest one you'll see in your life since its their headquarters 14. Uchi - I'm not a big sushi guy but it's Mecca if you do. The Saki list is huge. 15. Flying Saucer - As another poster mentioned, great beer list. Go for Trivia Night on Tuesday if you have a group of people. --- BBQ mentions: Franklins Kreutzs Smittys J Mueller Salt Lick (driftwood location is better, but both are good) ----- Best deck for people watching? Cedar Door, Iron Cactus, anywhere on the lake Best happy hr? Thursday's are dollar ritas at El Arroyo, Abel's...pretty much any bar with a patio/deck area Best beer selection? Gingerman or Flying Saucer Best live music? Stubbs, Emo's, Red Eyed Fly, The Backyard ---- Other Questions: Best place to shop for vinyl. Best place for stand up? I may be able to catch Brennan sunday night. I have a convention in town during the week after the wife leaves, what is a good late night place for a bunch of middle aged people who don't get out enough? In no need of titty bar suggestions, as I live within the Tampa tittybarapalooza zone Thanks again, GodfatherofSoul
Add Rainey Street to the bar options. Bangers and Craft Pride are my faves. Coopers on Congress if you want good BBQ without driving 45 minutes or waiting in line for an hour. It’s F1 weekend, so the race is going on. It’s a fun time, despite the Euro trash. Also, it’s Brittany (Spears) bitch
Change people watching to anywhere with a lake view you can sit and watch people docks, jetskis etc float by in the flood
Best Standup is definitely Capital City Comedy Club. Love that place Places you listed for live music are mostly only when they book legit acts on tour. Go to any of these places and they've almost always got 3-4 good bands you've never heard of that are free or $5 cover - they'll come around and get $5 from everyone that's staying for the next band: Saxon Pub - country rock One2One Bar - Blues rock ^these two are 100 yards from one another. lived within a 7 iron from them for 3.5 years and seen at least 100 bands between them. never been disappointed. Broken Spoke - country Continental Club - rock Antones - blues/jazz Elephant room - jazz others that would have a normal cover but good: 3Ten (little brother to ACL Live). Mohawk. Cheer up Charlies. Hotel Vegas probably forgetting some. I'd go to any of these before going to a random show at Stubbs/Emos.
Waterloo is good for vinyl but normally crowded on weekends. Mostly because it's downtown but also a cool place to just go chill and listen to some random records. End of an Ear is more low key and also pretty nice. I don't think they have a limit on new records you can open to listen to there. Waterloo is 2 I believe, if that's a factor at all
The BBQ list must be kinda old LA BBQ. Micklelthwait Craft Meats. Terry Blacks. Browns (sunday starting at 3 you get $10 worth of drinks at the attached bar and get a free BBQ plate). all up on that top tier. If the weather is good, people watching on Lamar Bridge is pretty great. get a nice little sunset and lots of benches to sit on.
Terry Blacks was really good last weekend. Spent way too much because the beef rib was calling my name. Mickelthwait sold out around 2:30 they said.
I may or may not have sprung for a pit upgrade for Britney (Bitch) I’m ready to re-live college years all over again
