Around here, it’s not foreign for families in the Cleveland Public School District to try and get their kid’s out to some of the suburban schools. At my wife’s school, there are 600 kids total among the six grade levels and about 25% are from CPS. Her school doesn’t have open enrollment, but parents usually send their kids to live with family so they can enroll. There’s no blanket rule for behavior, but I don’t think it’s strange for a parent to want to send their children to a district with more support.

I realize that. But it does work that way for some and I think saying a parent that sends their kid to the best school they can is the problem rather than saying the system not being equal for all is the problem is pretty fucked up.

Husband of a former teacher current administrator here. Fuck sending my kids to some of the schools she’s been at before. Has nothing to do with demographics and everything to do with there being a ton of shitty teachers at some of the schools she’s been at.

Do you have a crystal ball to know what situation will work best? I don't, therefore I'll play the percentages and put my kid in the best school that I realistically can.

saying I am moving from X location to Y is the problem. Sending to private instead of public in the same area is the problem. Sending to charter instead of local public is the problem. No one is saying the system is equal. No one thinks that inequality is not fucked up.

Magnet programs are a really useful way to diversify a school body and raise the educational standards in a economically disadvantaged area.

source: my wife works at one in an economically poor area, and her school is an A school with a diverse student population.

Me moving doesn't change the funding issue. Me staying here and paying less property taxes bc home values are lower doesn't increase the funding for the school here.

And the alternative is to put my kid in a situation where she is less likely to succeed? Blame the system. Don't blame me for wanting the best for my kid. That's ridiculous.

You’re making this way too personal. I understand why it’s your baby girl and you love her. I get that. But, if you can be objective you’ll realize that for your daughter no for society as a whole definitely it is. Because, it is not just dbl doing it, it is tens of thousands dbls doing. Surely you can see that. We live in a society what we do (good or bad) impacts everything and everyone.

Blaming parents that want the best for their kids is insane. Blame the system. School funding should be equal across the board, not based on local property taxes. That is the problem. Parents moving to get into a better district when able is the result of the problem.

now imagine living among other people in let’s say a community. A community that people don’t all leave and they stay to improve things. While one person might not be able to enact change a whole bunch of individuals can.

If you can’t look past “me, I, mine” and look at the collective whole there is no point in continuing. You’re a good guy who is a product of the system he lives in. Sadly that’s what capitalism creates. Have a good night.

just the modern version of arguments around segregation, white flight, busing, on and on

the inequality was entrenched so far back that now the "i want whats best for my kids" argument is largely considered acceptable but keeps the same system hummin' when it was wielded for the former cases

not attacking you fwiw dblplay1212 , just pointing out how difficult it is to fix these things after the original sins gets laundered through time

It sucks. Hell wife and I sat down and talked about it before making the decision. It came down to staying in this area, a nice but older area so property is less, and paying $25k a year for private school or moving one county over and having a much nicer house and amenities with a lower overall monthly budget. The house is more but we're not paying $2k a month for school. The downside is the area is 90% white.

Pointing out that you are part of the problem is t saying that if you behaved differently on your own, you would fix it. It’s merely pointing out that your actions are the very actions that create the problem.

I’m not part of this particular problem, but I’m definitely part of many other problems with society.

Putting the blame on charters is not the right approach either. In the majority of states, charter students are inequitably funded and are receiving significantly less than their public peers. Just like public districts, there are shitty CMOs and great CMOs.

Charter schools are a drain on the local public schools. They either get the highly qualified kids or the wealthy kids who can be transported in by the wealthy parents and the surrounding schools are left with the unmotivated worst off kids with our stable support

High tides rise all boats. Charter school comes in drains the sea and its massively different equality between the two

It is also inherently biased as fuck. Why are we accepting the assumption that high cohort test scores are the best correlation to “best for my child”? Personally, I’d argue that sending jr. to a homogenous upper class school is worse for him as a person. I’d rather my child be exposed to other cultures, other situations, and develop empathy, crisis management skills, and a whole host of other life skills that I find to be just as important as academic classwork. If doing so means my child can only get into the University of South Alabama rather than Williams, I’m perfectly fine with that.
