It amazes me that some people will overlook really really really shitty actions by someone just bc that person carries a badge and a gun. Pocketing $750k meant for inmates is awful, loophole or not.
It is, but you just change the law. But what was he doing exactly? Not sure I get it completely, was he providing them with food and made a profit?
This article explains it better. http://www.al.com/news/birmingham/index.ssf/2018/03/etowah_sheriff_pocketed_over_7.html As for him not losing his job, disagree. I don't want a public official funneling public money to himself bc of a loophole in the system. I will be shocked if he get re-elected. What he did was shameful. He's pocketing taxpayer money bc of a loophole. People like him shouldn't be in public office.
Agreed, but there's all kinds of old laws that are stupid as fuck. Incest marriages are legal too but you don't see anyone trying to justify them. http://yellowhammernews.com/tk-crazy-laws-alabama/
We’re not trying to justify this law. The law is wrong. Yes, it at bears teeters on unethical. But it isn’t illegal, and would absolutely be a lawsuit(that he would dominate imo) if he was fired due to a legal action that he took. Hopefully now that it is brought to light some things will happen. 1. Alabama’s backwards ass legislators will alter the law and remove the loophole. He still can’t be fired retroactively. He would just have to stop. 2. The constituents will excersizr the power of the vote and get him out.
Alabama is an at will state. An employee can be fired of any reason. Not sure if that applies to elected officials, but I feel like there's an ethical clause that could justify firing him. He's using a loophole to pocket taxpayer money. Than's shameful. Again, something can be legal and unethical.
Trashes Hispanics for coming to the US via “chain migration” (legal immigration) but defends this bullshit, totally not a racist piece of shit.
To paraphrase Dostoyevsky “The true character of a nation is seen in how it treats it’s incarcerated ” in that respect we fail miserably.
You're hard pressed to find a shittier state in the country. Hate education, hate human rights, and love love love corruption. http://www.al.com/news/birmingham/index.ssf/2018/02/alabama_sheriffs_pocket_tens_o.html Quote from the guy that wound up being arrested after this, my bolding:
Things that make this story even better, Qualls was arrested after speaking to AL.com and was hit with nonsense trafficking charges. http://www.al.com/news/birmingham/index.ssf/2018/02/man_arrested_on_six_charges_fo.html I appreciate Mr. Sims's alternative take on science.
To the extent he was doing it, it probably wasn't actually legal. I think that you could make a pretty strong case for prosecuting him under the state ethics law and/or federally for honest services mail fraud.
My God this guy just abuses every bit of power he has. I really hope he somehow ends up in jail over all of this.
Take 100 gallons of water, add 20 gallons of gasoline, now you have 120 gallons of gasoline. Drug Enforcement logic.
Him ending up in a jail he used to starve inmates in so he could line his own pockets would just be awesome. I'm sure the inmates would treat him well.
I did not know you could make marijuana butter, I wish I would’ve known that in college, I could’ve made some great grill cheese sandwiches.
Hate being cynical, but we know what's going to happen. They'll probably not be charged with anything, quietly resign, and go get a job at another PD an hour away, because the threshold for reasonably fearing for their life is hearing the wind blow. Civilians: can go to prison for shooting a cop executing a no-knock warrant because they (completely reasonably) assumed criminals were breaking in Cops: No charges for shooting an innocent man on his own property because they thought his cell phone was a gun
My God. They were going to unload on the first thing they saw and ask questions later bc a black man in a nice neighborhood had to be a violent criminal. They were simply too petrified of the job to do the job.
gotta put some blame on the suspect. can't just be black, also have a cell phone around the cops, and not expect to be shot at.
fucking TX Spoiler who am I kidding, could be anywhere in America has this one been discussed yet? Lawsuit filed against San Antonio police officer who pulled out woman's tampon on public street Spoiler By Walter Einenkel Tuesday Mar 27, 2018 · 4:31 PM CDT 180 Comments (180 New) 337 A lawsuit against the city of San Antonio, Texas, was filed claiming that back in 2016, San Antonio police officer Mara Wilson took a woman’s tampon out, on a public street, in order to internally search her vagina—while standing on that same public street. According to KSAT12, an ABC affiliate, the lawsuit charges that Natalie Simms’ constitutional rights were violated. According to the filing, Simms was approached by officers while sitting on a curb, talking on the phone and waiting for her boyfriend. The lawsuit claims Simms consented to a search of her car, which was parked across the street from where she was sitting, and that authorities found no illegal items. Then, the lawsuit alleges, authorities called a female officer, Wilson, to the scene to search Simms. The lawsuit details parts of the conversations between Simms and Wilson, recorded from Wilson's body camera. According to the court documents, Simms and Wilson went back and forth about the kind of clothes she was wearing before Wilson began searching her vaginal cavity. This is sadly and disturbingly not the first or second or third time something like this has happened between law enforcement and women. Here is a transcript from Spectrum News of the interaction between Simms and officer Wilson. Wilson: Stand up straight. Kind of lean back a little bit. (Inaudible) This is -- these are shorts? Oh, it's a skirt-short? Simms: Yes. Wilson: Oh, hell. Okay. Look straight ahead, okay. Spread your legs. I'm gonna ask you, do you have anything down here before I reach down here? Simms: No. I don't have nothing in my --. Wilson: Okay. From there it goes exactly the way you think it goes, based on the headline of this article. Wilson: Uh-huh. Are you wearing a tampon, too? Simms: Yes. Wilson: Okay. I just want to make sure that's what it is. Is that a tampon? Simms: Come on. Yes. Wilson: Huh? Is that a tampon? Simms: It's full of blood, right? Why would you do that? Wilson then dangled the bloody tampon and asked “rhetorical” questions in front of the other officers for half a minute. Back in August 2016, when this story broke, Texas Rep. Harold V. Dutton wondered how House Bill 324, signed into law in September 2015, did not apply here. Art.A18.24. BODY CAVITY SEARCH DURING TRAFFIC STOP. (a) In this article, "body cavity search" means an inspection that is conducted of a person ’s anal or vaginal cavity in any manner. (b) Notwithstanding any other law, a peace officer may not conduct a body cavity search of a person during a traffic stop unless the officer first obtains a search warrant pursuant to this chapter authorizing the body cavity search. SECTIONA2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2015. Good luck to this young woman in her lawsuit.
I dont do that. I have been critical of cops in bad shoots - the one where the cop shot the guy and planted the gun, the one at the gas sedation where the guy was getting out of the car. Hate to spoil your race boner
A couple of reasons IMO... 1) They're all guilty by association. If you cover for bad cops then you too are a bad cop. 2) Unlike most other fields, many cops don't have appropriate avenues to report other cops. Since it's a good ole boy system they'd be ostracized by their colleagues if they ever spoke up. And since most just want to collect a paycheck, they're fine with letting bad cops get away with whatever they want. I expect low level employees of all professions to be idiots. It's like when a kid at mcdonalds fucks up your order...yea it sucks...but the kid is too dumb to know any better...same rule applies to cops. My issue is with the administrations that actively support bad cops. I expect more out of these supposedly educated people.
I think all the settlement money coming from taxpayers is bullshit. You won't see major cultural changes with police until you take settlement and lawsuit money directly out of pension funds and operating budgets. You also need successful prosecutions against these assholes. Enough of the "fear for my life" excuses being acceptable. Hold police accountable for their actions.
Yep, this is very important to keep in mind. When citizens do get any financial restitution, it's from the taxpayers. It'd be awesome to see police have their pensions hit when they fuck up, I bet it'd put a stop to a lot of this REAL quick.
It would encourage effective sensitivity/cultural training along with filtering out the embarrassing hardos that want to play soldier. Make policing your community about the people instead of equipment and fucking people up. Problematic behavior would be addressed early, before someone ends up dead.
