As always you completely missed the point Brian Shute ‘s post.

Mister Me Too argued fireman are able to follow their training and police aren’t. Brian Shute made a post showing that isn’t really true.

What you’re doing adds nothing to the conversation. It’s a shame you don’t understand that.

His point was their mistakes are viewed differently. I gave a reason why that is. I didn't even bring up the fact that the mistakes firefighters make dont involve beating or shooting people.

Which is why it’s silly to compare the two professions in the way Mister Me Too did. I’m not sure why you’re struggling to understand that.

A firefighter doesn’t come to you for negative reasons. Sometimes a police officer has to come see you for a negative reason. There is an inherent difference in perception.

If cops would limit their mistakes to things that didnt involve beating and shooting people maybe they'd be viewed favorably like firefighters.

    All cops? No.

    Most? No.

    Some? Yes.

Do the non often cover the ones that are? Yes.

I have years and years and years of data to back up my stance. POC are treated differently, in general, by cops. That's an absolute fact.

Again, we have decades of stories of brutality by police on POC. We have a decade + of video confirming those stories. Those things have shaped the way communities view police.

As the resident POC in this thread, let me say:

Being police is a hard job with limited upside, but you aren't drafted into this position, you choose to be. Most cops are very good at a highly stressful job and do things the right way. The problem is these same people cover for the bad or unfit cops who aren't good at their jobs and it drags the entire profession down.

I always say society can only move as fast as it's slowest individual. This is a strong comment for law enforcement. Stuff that we now see has been happening forever, but now everybody has a camera. You can't be the shitty "old school" LEO there used to be in the past because someone will catch it.

Police aren't the problem. Bad police are, and the sooner that they quit making excuses and weeding out the shitty ones, the better society will be.

Probably not. The UK doesn’t have the issue or shooting people and yet their public opinion of their police isn’t much different.

In 2017, 57% of Americans have a “great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in law enforcement.

In 2017, 53% of UK residents were “satisfied” with their local police force.

Unfortunately enforcing the law is inherently an unpopular activity.

You're saying there's not decades of data that shows POC are treated differently? You're actually arguing against statistics?

You're part of the problem. You're a cop that refuses to admit there's an issue. You turn a blind eye to it and act like everything is ok. It's not. And that's why many people have a lack of respect for cops in general.

The irony is that cops tell the community to work with them, to ignore the "Don't be a rat!" mentality and work with them to make the community better. Yet cops live by the same motto. They don't turn in the bad to make the department better. They operate just like a street gang.

This where you're showing ignorance. Body cams have changed the game and not in the way you would expect. I posted earlier some stats on how the number of complaints haven't gone down, but the number of complaints that have been found unfounded is sky rocketing.

The guys that have been caught doing unethical things are fired or put in jail. The protecting bad cops stigma is one that I have not personally encountered.

    Of course you don't.

Yet in just the last week I can show you cases of a dept back a cop that beat the shit out of a young girl on a beach, a cop arresting a person to cover up the cop running a stop sign and causing a wreck, and a cop that killed an unarmed man that was on his knees in a hotel hallway being rehired so he can get a nice pension.

That's just this week from this thread.

My intention in comparing cops and firemen wasn't to excuse anyone's bad behavior or to minimize wrongful actions by members of any "first responder" job. My intention was to give the opinion that everyone thinks they know what a cop (and an EMS worker in a lot of cases) SHOULD be doing, versus firefighters who people seem content to trust to do the right thing without second-guessing. This is even true when our actions result in harm to civilians (which people often don't realize is our fault) versus the other first responders who have a live audience critiquing their every move (live and on constant video replay.)

The hidden nature of our work vs. the up close, interpersonal interactions cops and EMS have with citizens allows for a lot more second-guessing and blaming of them when things don't go well. It also allows for people to assign motives for why the harm was done, rather than understanding that it was a mistake in good faith. I'm not talking about a cop jamming a broomstick up someone's ass or planting drugs on them, I'm talking about cops making tough decisions in short time periods. I believe Hanlon's Razor applies much more often to negative police interactions today than police are given credit for. We are all obviously entitled to an opinion about why that's the case.

4 instances in a week of cops being shitty and then being backed up by their dept is far too fucking common for my liking. And that's just the ones THIS THREAD picked up. Lord knows how many more there are that didn't get posted or didn't get new attention at all.

Again, you're part of the problem. You look at those cases and you're ok with it. As a police officer you should be livid at their actions bc they reflect on you. You're not. You'd rather make excuses and brush it off as not a big deal. That mentality is the root of the entire problem and you don't even realize it.

Wasn’t there also the cop in Florida who planted drugs on people? Over a thousand arrest had to be overturned. The beauty of it all was when someone attempted to investigate him they were reprimanded for it.

The prosecutor who was looking into the bodycam footage of the deputy got a lot of shit from her State Attorney boss, he claimed she was ruining cases and stirring up trouble.

She has since resigned and filed a whistleblower retaliation complaint against the state attorney's office as a prelude to a lawsuit.

It's more than one bad cop, it's a broken system that allows a miscarriage of justice on this kind of scale. A broken system that forces people into felony plea deals during arraingment, while the state attorney and public defender's offices cant be fucking bothered to review the bodycam footage that they had full access to. 119 people offered up as meat to the arrest quota grinder.

This is just from the last couple days.

A New Jersey police officer beat his 3 month old to death and then raised $17,000 in donations to cover funeral expenses. Autopsy revealed the injuries were very suspicious back in December, he had been suspended with pay for 7 months and is just now being charged

    https://nj1015.com/nj-cop-charged-with-beating-newborn-to-death-raised-17k-online/

LAPD detective with a history of sexual misconduct raped a 15 year old girl, after he was assigned to investigate a case involving her. The nature of that particular case? She had been sexually assaulted by another man. How much jail time does he face for this heinous act? 3 YEARS

10 year LAPD Veteran is arrested and charged with multiple counts of rape after a cold hit DNA match tied him to an unsolved rape case.

I am 5 years late on this one, but holy shit. I haven't gasped out loud at something in quite a while, this is disgusting.

Cop tased him in the chest for 23 seconds sending the 17 year old kid into cardiac arrest. What kind of fucking monster do you have to be to drag a dying person around, throw him face first to the ground, and then admonish his lifeless body for 6 minutes while he suffers permanent brain damage?

The cop got only 4 YEARS for this. He wasn't convicted for deploying the taser so liberally, local police and the federal government ruled that the taser use was within force guidelines. He got sentenced for dropping him on his face, civil rights violation. Also of course the feds had to step up because the local PD didn't see anything wrong here. Kid has permanent brain damage now.

Here's a very good article about it.

He literally tazed him bc him got tired of fucking with him. Not bc feared for his life, but bc he just didn't have the patience to deal with a 17 yr old that didn't follow his orders. He ran out of patience after 24 seconds.
