I finished Behind the Police. The main takeaway for me was that police haven't gotten bad, there been awful since day one and gotten progressively worse, but they've never been good. Ever. Recommend for anyone that hasn't listened and I ordered Alex Vitales The End of Policing last night.

SIAP - but this is pretty ridiculous: Headline: "Investigation Finds That Nobody Put a Tampon in Cop's Starbucks Drink" - An investigation has concluded in the Starbucks coffee tampering case brought by a Los Angeles Police Department officer, and found that — surprise, surprise — nobody put a tampon in the man’s coffee. That’s per Fox 11 LA and others, who quote the released report, which states: “Based on the evidence available at this time, the item in the drink was possibly a cleaning type cloth commonly used by store employees. their explanation was that they have a scanner that automatically reads plates, and if a plate is in the system (stolen, wanted, etc.) it will alert. The scanner alerted on this plate as a stolen vehicle. they said they do what they normally do when that happens. In this case, they are claiming it was an error with the scanner system. It somehow scanned this plate and tied it to a stolen motorcycle, but didn't say - hey this is a stolen motorcycle, it just said: this plate is registering as stolen. The system showed a picture of this car, not the motorcycle that the stolen plate was associated with. I guess that makes some sense, but that's an unfortunate mistake to make.
Who can you call besides the cops for a suicidal person? A majority of the time they seem to arrive eager to oblige a person's death wish.
There are suicide and mental health hotlines that will send someone. I’ve called them for an employee before. Not sure if they do it if they’re armed though.
I mean, I could waste my day pulling articles of cops escalating suicide call outs and killing the people they were called out to help. Local PDs aren't staffed to the brim with guys trained in crisis intervention, and a mental health crisis does not mesh well with the way law enforcement is trained. Are you saying that the inverse is true?
Sigh... You does like to nitpick my hyperbolic statements, but to be fair I did write them. *Cops being used as frontline mental health workers results in the deaths of the very people calling them for help way too often.*
I’d venture to say that it happens often, too often. I think it’s fair to request that people do their best to be as truthful and honest as possible. Stating what he initially stated is, as he stated, hyperbole. What people need is not hyperbole, but the truth, which is heinous and discouraging enough as it is.
I'd bet opinions are being formed based on the information we are exposed to, which may not reflect the actual reality. We don't see the thousands of times police come out and help a suicidal person and they actually get them the help they need. We only see the times they escalate and it goes wrong. my wife works in mental health and #1 there are A LOT of these kinds of calls and #2 the huge majority of the time they don't end in someone being shot by the police. It's like most everything these days. The happy endings don't get clicks, views, and subscriptions, so we rarely see them.
And this is true of basically this entire thread. The more we are exposed to things, the more prevalent we think they are. When we watch videos of bad cops over and over and over, we develop irrational and unrealistic view of cops. That's not to say any abuse or unjustified shooting by a cop is ok, or that it doesn't happen. obviously it happens and obviously it's wrong every single time. But inundating yourself with bad cop videos will have an effect over time. Spend the next 2 weeks watching dog attack videos and you are not going to have a very favorable opinion of the woman walking her golden retriever down your street. You are conditioning yourself. This happens the other way too, obviously. White people who have never been harassed by a cop don't believe black people are victims of police abuse and harassment. The more you are not exposed to something, the less prevalent you think it is. The lack of exposure to police abuse conditions some people to form an unrealistic picture of reality. Name anything that gets headlines and it's the same. Like shark attacks. We hear about shark attacks. Sharks kill on average about one person per year in the US. Cows kill 20 people every year.
I’m not sure he’s saying anything unreasonable in those posts, so I’m not sure about the feeling of torture or disdain for them.
Welcome to having a job, congratulations. You're not allowed to fuck up as a cop, end of discussion. You're not allowed to fuck up in many lines of work because often times those fuckups cost people their lives. You don't get to fuck up as a surgeon, you don't get to fuck up cutting lumber, you don't get to fuck up on an oil rig, and so on. You also don't need to be patted on the back for not fucking up because, get this, it's your job. If you fuck up on your job, you may be punished within the limits of the system you work in. If you fuck up as a surgeon you may get sued for malpractice or they may throw you in front of a review board and suspend your license. If you fuck up as a cop you may go to jail for breaking the law. If you can't handle the pressure required to do such a job, don't sign up for such jobs. There are plenty of jobs where the worst thing that can happen to you if you fuck up is you get fired. If you sign up for such a job, your aim should be to be perfect every single day you go to work because the alternative, where you fuck up and someone is hurt or killed because of your negligence, should scare the shit out of you.

dude went for a gun. Now I am not saying the cops are justified but why go to your door (when someone knocks) with a gun. I’m going to stereotype the guy and say he was a tough guy with a gun and maybe that is why neighbors call cops over noise. I like playing music loud when I grill. I live in a condo so my neighbors are all close. I’ve told them all if I am too loud come tell me. I’ve never answered my door with a gun in my waistband.
I don’t think robbers knock first. Also they clearly identified themselves as “Phoenix PD”. I don’t know if his door had a peep hole so he could look through. I’ll stop because I really don’t want to look like I am defending the cops because they didn’t have to shoot him. They could have tased him. It’s a fucked up situation and another reason why guns suck. My point was I was 100% outraged at first when I read the original post. Then I watched the video stayed outraged watched the whole video and thought “shit they are going to get off because he had a gun”. Hope that makes sense.
Just a little background info. The girlfriend says they've been having sketchy people knock on their door in the middle of the night in the weeks leading up to this. Both cops move out of view of his peep hole. As far as he knows it's the middle of the night and someone out of sight just knocked on his door. I don't think it's totally unreasonable to open the door with a gun. Also the 911 caller lied and said that the couple was fighting so the cops would respond quicker to his previous noise complaint. The couple were in fact playing Crash Bandicoot on the couch. PLUS, what is it maybe 3 seconds before that guy opens fire while the guy is getting down on his knees? Dude was killed for opening his door with a gun. I agree that they'll probably be cleared of wrongdoing.
I don’t want to defend the cops. So if it made it seem that way it’s not my intention. Just read the article and it is fucked up. I am against guns and this is another example of why. I had a similar situation happen to me (cops called over noise and we were playing video games) so I 100% believe her. I think I also posted on her a while ago that I had a drunk neighbor mistake my place for his and come to my door and try and open the door. It was also really late and I didn’t open the door with a gun. I turned my porch light on and asked what he wanted. He noticed his mistake and left. So again I say that not to defend the cops but to say I believe it happened but there are ways (beside answering the door with a gun) to handle the situation. It’s a sad situation. He didn’t deserve to die.
