I agree. Punching somebody who isn’t a physical threat should not be condoned, which is why I think a weekend at a pet shelter or maybe cooking hot meals for the homeless would really teach this guy a lesson.
Thats not the same, but people do need to be careful about getting in physical confrontations because they can have disastrous consequences.

I’m sure this is pointless, but the dead dudes (I have a certain bit of happiness typing this) intent was to provoke something, and he got his wish. I think you’re confusing the fact that people are happy or don’t mind that the racist got punched with them saying the puncher shouldn’t face legal consequences. They weren’t doing that.
Sometimes the threat of it happening alone is enough of a deterrent. And if you don't take that seriously then you probably deserved it anyway.

I do remember the police doing something like this to an old man at a protest last summer and they faced no consequences at all.
He did give the old man a chance to walk away, the racist ash pile decided to challenge him and got what he deserved. Old man was clearly looking for a fight and picked the wrong opponent.
