Don't think the Pinehurst guys would treat him that way if he wasn't a really good dude. At the very least, he seemed to handle his time at Pinehurst really well.
Dave is always complaining about Riggs costing him a ton of money, so I imagine Barstool covered a lot of it. But I also imagine Dave cuts the plug quickly on things that don’t drive ROI, so good for Riggs if that’s the case.
I don’t think Riggs is absolutely terrible. I just don’t think he’s good enough to be the face of a major sport for Barstool. I think he would be really successful in Trent or Frankie’s role. They’re just not good at all.
At the very least he’s very good at creating relationships with sponsors, tour players, courses, etc and that all drives content
Actually take that back, most impressive thing he’s done is create the barstool classic. That’s a big deal and has been an overwhelming success
True but the counter argument would be they are one of the biggest sports brands in the country and their demographic is golfs #1 priority right now so how difficult is it really to grow barstools golf brand? Full disclosure I think Riggs is doing well but agree they need a main person that is likable.
I also think part of it is that Barstool really doesn’t have the “avid” golf fan base that NLU has for example. Much more casual of a fan and frankly, a different audience in many ways
The PGA Tour is getting way more proactive on gambling than any of the other major American sports. And Barstool is now building a ton of their business around gambling. Yet Riggs and co. are providing zero golf gambling content. That’s just a boneheaded miss.
If there's one thing barstool needs is more people who know nothing about gambling to pretend they care about gambling.
The obvious answer is for them to hire someone who actually knows enough about golf gambling to provide that content. Riggs ain’t that guy.
Dude. That’s awesome. But hopefully he got an explanation as to how the first Dr. came to that conclusion edit:
Hard to think of something more insufferable in sports than people that don't know gambling trying to talk gambling. I'd rather listen to people talk about their brackets and fantasy team all day than listen to someone talk about their "sheet"
I dont see Barstool golf being a success because of Riggs and crew. I see it as a success because Barstool itself is super successful and the target demo that encompasses their audience is generally interested in the subject matter. Im not saying it isn’t successful. What I am saying is there’s a ton of opportunity cost here with having Riggs lead the charge.
Some of the comments below have me crying. Dead. "It’s like when a kid beats cancer and walks out of the hospital. Banana land" "He left his hair at Pinehurst, got beat by a 12 yr old and then cried out the door. Tough look" "It’s like a guy on his last day that worked 30 years at a bank taking no sick days"
$44 for 16 cans of non-alcoholic mixer and the idiots will eat it up. The branding does look good though.
Riggs seems pretty dumb for a Harvard grad. I assume his parents bribed someone to get him in as an athlete. He was awful on radio too. Kirk was actually really good in that role during the Super Bowl. Someone with actual broadcasting skill that wasn’t afraid to push back at Dave. Then I heard his show and it was all local Boston political stuff and his super fans fighting each other.
Pretty sure pinehurst put him up for free. It cost them nothing really to give him a hotel room and let him play when the course was under capacity. And he put our content daily and had that scramble with kisner
That includes shipping, but yeah. Fuck that. You can get a 6 pack of ginger ale and a six pack of grape juice for less than $10 total.
PMT and their talk about Blake Koepka and Brandee Dechamblis is more memorable than anything they've done
I haven't been keeping up too much in here during quarantine so idk if I've missed discussion on it but Jeff D'Lowe's dozen trivia and fictional debates have been some of my favorite quarantine content of anywhere. Hadn't even seen them til probably June and I'm now caught up on all of them. Very funny. And it's made me really like Brandon Walker a lot more than I had going into them
