this is pretty typical Longhorn yuppy food
lol at cutting away so quickly after the "reveal" bc the plate looked like dog shit
Do we like pellet smokers itt? I am moving into a house and will finally be able to get a smoker after doing apartment living last 5-6 years. last smoker I had was a WSM.
i think we’re pretty split
i understand the ease aspect but given the choice i go charcoal all day
Not pictured: Alabama white sauce (duh), charred okra, tomato, onion, cucumber salad, and cornbread.
Just another day in no-brine poultry land.
As someone who has a pellet smoker, I like them.
I really wanted a stick burner, but fuck that's some work
Looked a bit better than it was. Got caught in some rain, ended up cooking a little longer than I should’ve. Corn-poblano slaw was good though.
I will also probably be going the pellet smoker route once we move into our new house. What doesn't come with the price tag of a Yoder, the cheap construction of new Traegers, or the stupid ass bull horns of a Rec Tec?
Looks like you'll need to become a fan of some bullhorn
Really is amazing how fucking ugly they are
They're just embarrassingly dumb looking. That feature will 100% keep me from buying the product.
The new Weber is very intriguing.
The new Weber is a greaser fire waiting to happen, they didn’t make a drip tray thinking the vaporizer bars would work and it’s been a bad deal. Also seeing they are having issues with the pellet hopper not dropping enough pellets into the auger.
Plenty of folks out there are making custom handles to replace the horns. I will be replacing mine once I can find something I like- the cooker is excellent though.
Yeah I thought I heard the Weber got some awful reviews out of the gate.
Well this would be a game changer. Link to any?
Lemme see if I can find you one- I am on a fb group board and see guys doing it all the time. A lot of people also just buy the traeger replacement handle and swap it out. They just screw on so are very easy to switch out.
Huh, I hadn't read about it, just saw an ad and knowing their rep was intrigued, looks like they need to work shit out.
When you plan on using white sauce, what rub do you use?
i’ve read and heard good reviews on the masterbuilt pellet rig
Reviews on the site there are pretty terrible
I used Fox Bros rub, brown sugar, coarse pepper, and oregano.
Yeah- I was really close to going with that one because it’s Weber- but after research I decided not to. I am sure they will get it fixed and it will be fine, I just didn’t want to wait on it.
admittedly haven’t looked at it until you asked, but everything i’d heard when it came out was positive
Lazy Sunday baby backs while listening to Grateful Dead from Tuscaloosa 5/17/77
Pics don’t really do pulled pork justice, but it all turned out great. Will probably mix things up in the future as the bark didn’t harden back as much as I would have wanted after unwrapping. Took about 12 hrs total
Better non sideways pic
By the way, what kind of lump charcoal does everyone use? I used Fogo for my first several cooks and liked it a lot but it's obviously pricey. What's a comparable alternative?
I have used some Royal Oak too but it is not very good in comparison.
I bought cowboy lump from Lowe’s.
Rockwood is king
Bigly mistake on your part.
People say that.
I’ve started using a mix of royal oak and nicer lump. Currently using Golden Cast Iron brand lump for the nice part of the blend and have been pleased. It’s a got a lot of big pieces in the bag, burns hot and clean.
I've got some Jealous Devil that I'm liking so far. I've got a Royal Oak plant about an hour away that I got a 55 gal. drum for cheap. I'll be buying some Rockwood and FOGO once I get done with these 2 bags of Jealous devil(love the zipper close on these bags) I still have about 5 Gal of some good quality Royal Oak.
I use Royal for short cooks and I like the Kamado Big Blocks for long. I will never buy Jealous Devil again. Have some BB or something like that to try out. I get Rockwood when I need something from ACE to use my coupon. Otherwise I don't think it's even close to worth what it costs.
Been using Royal Oak from when they were on sale at Lowe's a year ago. Finally ran out of my supply
Where do you get the Kamado Big blocks? Local grill store stopped carrying them
Lowe’s runs a good deal with free shipping.
Is $25 for the 20lb bag regular pricing?
I think so based on my order history, might be slightly cheaper than that. I think the difference is that sometimes they offer free shipping which is when I typically order. Right now its telling me this item is unavailable for purchase online, have to go in store. I see that I got bags for about $22 delivered for free but I also get 10% off.
This is a great deal. Got mine last week.
I’m not a shill for AGC, but they have some good/cheap products.
Edit: their charcoal is also the cheapest I’ve found anywhere. 2 for $40 for the premium brands.
Ace hardware had an online deal for BB charcoal, so I got 40 pounds of Hickory and 20 pounds of oak for $35 total. You could try checking online and seeing if the deal is still running
Oh and work went through all 30+ pounds of pork that I brought today lol
best bang for your buck when it comes to lump
it’s a tier 2 product but it’s definitely worth more than what you pay
Thighs and Elgin hot sausage
