Was figuring out where to post this so glad you made a thread. This is a really interesting idea IMO. The clubs from these countries, with the exception of ajax, are all struggling in a big way and even ajax is not doing as well as it could. Belgium has half the population of states like Florida and New York. Even combined, Belgium and the Netherlands have about the same population as Texas. Still less than half of England and france and about 1/3rd of Germany. It makes sense for smaller countries to do this. If you want any chance of expanding your TV money, you need new markets and a better product to potentially sell to an international audience. how would European spots be treated in a combined league like this? That would probably be the key question for some of the teams. How is relegation going to look and will there be a combined second division as well? That would be the key for the other teams.
Austria-Swiss merger makes a ton of sense too. I know there’s been a Scandinavian/Scottish proposal thrown out there the past few years.
wouldn’t that be determined by the UEFA coefficient of the new league? I don’t know how the combined league would fair but I would imagine that the new league would not get the same amount of champions league/Europa league spots that the leagues do separately. Still makes sense for them to do it to try and create a viable domestic league though.
