this thread is inspired by all of user IV's horrible opinions on gaming, specifically mass effect. what's your favorite stories? why did they stand out? are you a shallow fuck who enjoys anything with swords and magic or do you look for a interesting plots and real character progression?
no particular order, just listing elite stories and lore SOMA Bioshock/Bioshock Infinite The Last of Us KOTOR Kingdom Hearts FF7 Spec Ops: The Line Bungie era Halo Half Life OoT The Witcher series Bloodborne MGS games involving Kojima Silent Hill 2 The Walking Dead, well, season 1 at least Mass Effect trilogy (i don't actually hate it, it's just very good and not quite best ever, i like the lore more than the actual plot) Destiny (presentation is ass, lore is phenomenal) Elder Scrolls (same as destiny) FF6 Chrono Trigger
Stories alone 1: Bioshock/infinite 2: Red Dead Redemption 3: KOTOR 4: TWD season 1 5: Metal Gear Solid 3
Hahaha I wouldn't be the least bit offended to see someone have SoC #1 on this list. My beef with that game lies nowhere near the story. The story is top notch and the ending could be argued as the best in gaming. My beef is with the overall game and those who like to say it's the GOAT. Game still gotta be fun yo
Silent Hill 2 The LISA Trilogy (The very first entry, LISA: The First, isn't necessary, and is really weird and abstract and somehow more disturbing than the other 2. You should start at Lisa: The Painful (the second entry), and then Lisa: The Joyful ) Chrono Trigger Metal Gear Solid 2
LISA will fuck you up, emotionally and otherwise. Don't bother looking up anything about it, just go buy it on steam totally on my recommendation. Probably just splurge on the complete edition for the soundtrack too
Started watching a lets play for the trilogy last night. Im not too far in but its pretty hilarious and fucked up.
story was there, the presentation just wasn't. like at all. crazy good lore but it wasn't in the game really. which is fine, i don't mind 2nd screening for a large portion of the lore but having to do so for 98% of it is absurd
I gave up after the first month and came back after Crota. Had a ton of fun with destiny but it belongs nowhere near this thread
it's the best feeling gameplay in the history of the genre. it's foolish to give up on an mmo in week 1, they never have great launches. we live in an age where games are released as incomplete products because publishers force the games out well before the devs are done with it because of money and the ability to update at any point. the changes made to destiny over it's lifespan are go far beyond anything i've ever seen in a game, except final fantasy 14 which went from completely unplayable to one of the best mmos ever released. if you don't like repetitive gear grinds in co op form regardless of how great the gameplay is you were never going to like destiny. hating it because the story was fractured due to activision is understandable but at the same time it's ridiculous to make up your mind about a game like this so early in it's lifespan. unless you have a good group of friends to play the game with (probably 10-12 who play it obsessively) you were never going to have a good time. it's not the kind of game that's to be played solo. luckily tmb has a phenomenal destiny ps4 following so it really took off for those of us who gave bungie time to figure out how an mmo is actually supposed to work. disagree, the lore and universe are great with awful presentation. very similar to the dark souls approach.
Dark souls doesn't belong here either and I'm full on gay for that franchise. The lore is fine and there's some great characters but you gotta get out of here saying it should be in a thread about the greatest video game stories ever. Not a fucking chance man. Lore doesn't matter any in this discussion.
lore absolutely matters. 2nd post in this thread says lore matters and i made the thread so yeah. lore is as important as anything else. i care far more about the universes the devs create than the singular overarching plot which even if tlou/bioshock tier is still only part of the bigger picture.
if D2 is everything D1 is right now except more and bigger with a story that is logical and actually goes somewhere everyone will forget about pre-taken king era Destiny. also the crucible is ass and will never be able to compete with battlefield/cod/overwatch unless they make some drastic fucking changes.
Let me rephrase then, you should not have an opinion that a game belongs in a "best story" thread, simply based on lore.
i changed the thread to avoid dumbass semantics arguments. this is supposed to be all inclusive. anything awesome about the universe of a game is worth discussing. don't be an asshole.
overwatch absolutely deserves mentioning because of the most relatable characters in the history of gaming and a rich universe people are just begging to see more of even if it isn't presented in the game. but there's nothing that even resembles a story and it's more worthy of inclusion than destiny, which had something that kind of resembled a story.
I'm just of the opinion that there should be a proper balance of lore and in game experience as a qualifier.
tlou has bottom tier lore. there is no substance there outside of the best character development ever.
I'm just saying that when you bring lore into the equation, it should co-exist with a solid in game story. A lot of games can give you just lore and does little to effect what you see on screen. Some games just hit you with a solid story and that translates to the actual in the moment experience. Some games (very rarely) do both (mass effect/the Witcher). Games like Destiny that have solid lore and little presentation end up feeling like a cop out from the story perspective. But in the end, doesn't matter if the game is still a good time
i'm not sure there's anything that does both other than bioshock, of course I still haven't played TW3. mass effect always fell a bit flat to me.
