I have never heard of universities having turf wars like this before. Is this a thing anywhere else? Although, when Notre Dame started a new program based in Chicago the state of Illinois fumbled some processing and delayed student loan funding for a year. Maybe Northwestern and UC were behind it
I'd think Illinois would welcome an out of state school running programs in Chicago, for the revenue.
If Boren would just keep his mouth shut instead of coming out with a new opinion every other week, we'd probably be ok and all the OU fans wouldn't be about the conference.
I think most Tech fans appreciate Boren for actually being proactive instead of the conference burying it's figurative head in the sand
from out here on the outside, if Houston and Cincy etc are good additions y'all dying a slow death and just dragging it out. take the bullet or bottle of pills and get it over with
I'm not talking about Houston. I'm talking about him flip flopping his opinion every time he makes a public statement.
Boren has been pretty straightforward if you ask me. 1. Texas has to get rid of the LHN 2. Big 12 Network has to get done 3. Wanted conference championship game 4. Expansion only works if the first 2 things happen first (they won't so OU will be walking and there's no reason for Texas to stay in the watered down league with OU gone)

If it dies it'll be because of weak leadership and an inability of people to problem solve behind closed doors. Boren being the primary suspect.
"The Big 12 is disadvantaged when compared to the other conferences in three ways. We do not have at least twelve members, we do not have a conference network, and we do not have a championship game,” Boren said in a statement he released to OU Daily. “I think that all three of these disadvantages need to be addressed at the same time. Addressing only one without addressing all three will not be adequate to improve the strength of the conference." Just six months later at these meetings in Dallas, he did a completely different tune on the conference. "Where does the data take us and what strategy makes the best sense? This conference is so strong. We're not in a weak position; we're in a strong position," he said. "We'll evaluate all of that and also look at who the possible partners are. … I've tried to keep an open mind and I think that's the spirit of the conference membership. I would not want this group to be reporting four or five months down the road that this decision was made very carelessly." so the conference can't be strong while being disadvantaged compared to SEC/B1G? that's not flip flopping at all. the data shows that the conference is strong and the schools make money. the data also shows that the conference could (should) be stronger by adding more (good) programs both of those quotes still echo this sentiment:
haha this is ridiculous. Boren is the only one being so vocal about making the conference stronger and I hate Boren
Maybe so, I just don't see Presidents in other leagues spouting off in dissenting opinions. Probably just a factor of the presidents and ADs running the big 12, whereas most conferences have a strong figurehead.
If Boren doesn't say something, Chip Brown is going to use all of his connections and spill all the juicy details anyway.
Guys, why the fuck are yall defending Boren right now? Boren is a moron and he's publicly embarrassed the university multiple times in the past 5 years by yapping his pedo mouth about expansion when he shouldn't
Wait so we announced that we are expanding announced a champ game that starts next year and will 95% have a tv network by 2018. Why the fuck is he always trying to be so god damn grumpy
Did you know that if we sign 2 teams we get 500m from espn and fox if we sign 4 we get 1b??? How the fuck would we not have a tv deal if either of those happen? They are going to have to get their money back somehow
Is there anyway ESPN buys out the remainder of the LHN contract with Texas to stop hemorrhaging money on production costs of running the LHN? ESPN would probably end up saving money by doing that. That would expedite the process of the Big 12 imploding or surviving.
ESPN/Fox don't appear willing to invest in the B12 beyond requirements of the tier 1 contracts. They wouldn't commit to a network. ESPN is pulling programming from the LHN. While timing is poor for starting a traditional network, ESPN is at least working on a network solution to prop up the ACC.
ESPN isn't handing Texas a check for $200+ million to get out of losing a (relatively speaking) small amount of money every year. I'm sure they also want to see how the LHN does if Texas football returns to mid 2000's form and Shaka is able to turn the basketball program into a power.
Why is the acc network scheduled for 2019? That's a long time to get a network off the ground, especially one that's had a dubious history to this point. Makes me wonder if ESPN is waiting for the next major shift then they'll bail out of it.
Probably a combination of ESPN wanting to see how media platforms evolve and ESPN not actually wanting to do an ACC network. 2019 gives ESPN time to drag their feet and see how little the ACC is willing to accept. The ACC gives ESPN a lot of (relatively) cheap content that plays well to East Coast markets. ESPN wants to keep the ACC happy-ish.

http://m.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Journal/Issues/2016/08/01/Media/Big-12-TV.aspx? Shocker. ESPN and Fox don't want to pay more money for teams no one cares about.
All the more reason the Big XII should first and foremost be pushing to expand the playoff to 8 teams.
Totally agree. I actually applaud for both networks potentially nutting up. That said, I need to see it to actually believe it.
they probably shouldn't have added that clause, then. or did they think the big 12 had the possibility of picking off a school from another P5 conference?
I have to imagine they expected other P5 schools being available. I do agree shame on them for putting the clause in but at the same time the networks seem to be in a decent position to force the issue. If nothing else the possibility of not renewing the deal in eight years could force Texas hand to do something drastic (which would probably be Independence).
again, if the big 12 goes to twelve teams espn/fox are contractually obligated to pay the league 500mil, if it goes to 14 teams they have to pay a billion dollars. i wouldn't call that "nutting up" but yes the playoff going to 8 helps everyone.
I think ultimately the Networks won't risk court but when the Grant of Rights are up I expect they play hardball. Either way it wouldn't shock me if the Big 12 isn't a thing when this deal ends.
So I guess the other part of this is will the networks leaking this make the Big 12 think twice about expansion? I would assume not but I guess I am not sure what scenario makes the conference most stable going forward.
