Should add, a goal would be to eventually ride 20mi to work a few days a week if possible. So something that could handle that. Long way off from actually being able to do that, but it's what I'd aim for.
A hybrid IMO would be your best bet. But go look at your local shop and see what you like. Anything other than a beach cruiser should be able to handle that
I might be in the minority here but I would not recommend wearing headphones or earbuds while riding. This is especially true if you're a newer rider.
Listening to headphones while cycling is fairly dangerous. Just be aware. edit - what thunderstruck said... just watch motorists while you're driving around in your car
I ride 99% along the beach. They are open so I am aware of my surroundings but I agree wth you and should have added that to my post. Don't want to put anyone in danger and I wouldn't use them if I was riding mostly streets
Yep. Have rode out on rural highways and sometims didn't hear cars until they were passing me. Scared the shit out of me when they were two feet away.

They're not very expensive so I don't think you'll be save yourself much (if at all) buy going to Amazon.

a.tramp this week is probably going to be yours unless I make up today's ride. My new puppy is keeping me up all night and I am waking up late. Going to try and run since my runs are half (if that time wise) as long as my rides.
I almost had to beat the shit out of some old retard on a tri bike tonight. Firstly, whenever I see someone on a tri bike, I always chase them down and pass them for funzies. Well, as I come up to this guy, I can see he's an absolute train wreck of a bike handler (like most people with aero bars who have no idea what they are doing). As I come right up behind him, he starts slowing way down for no reason at all, and swerving all over the road. Then he unclips one shoe (lmao wtf?), and makes a right turn onto the same road I was turning onto. Of course, he can't hold his line for shit, and swerves way out into the middle of the road while turning. So I just take the inside line and cruise by, trying get away from this trainwreck as soon as possible. After I'm past him, I hear him start screaming and absolutely losing his shit. So I stop. Then he proceeds to tell me that "he's almost died because of people like me who don't know how to ride" and that "you pass on the outside." And then he proceeds to just start cussing me out. I was calm for a bit. And told him that he was swerving all over the road, that I had everything completely under control, didn't touch him (or come anywhere close), and at no time was anyone in any danger. But was totally unhinged, and was just screaming "well, I didn't see you." And then started swearing at me some more. I finally lost my cool and told.him he was a pussy and I was going beat the ever loving shit out of his old ass. Then he screamed "stay away from me" and rode off crying more. It took everything I had not to ride back up to him and kick him off his bike.
The young ones are usually cool. I've came up on the MSU tri team while riding a couple times, and that has been cool. But this guy was old, terrible, and completely insane.

aero bike, shifters on the horizontal aero bars extending out the front. brakes are down and to the sides of the position that the rider has his arms/hands in 90% of the time. less control over bike handling due to position and weight placement on the aero bars and no quick response to braking due to, well, your hands are not on or near the brakes.
