Houston winds today averaged 16mph with gusts up to 22.

edit: this is very showoff-y and I'm aware. I'm trying to convince myself I'm still in shape

 

Got the bike. Went with a Giant roam 3. Also had them put some clip less pedals on. Weather is going to fucking suck all weekend so I can't ride until Monday. Fuck.

Shorts don't get here until tomorrow, I want to take it out today for a few miles but I feel like I'll regret sitting on that saddle without padding

 

A few miles isn't long enough to make a difference with padding IMO. Also, your ass is going to hurt regardless.

 

Yeah, rode over to the bike path and practiced with the clips once I was off the main road. Rode ~3mi and realized how fucking out of shape I am. Feels pretty awesome though.

 

I don't know if I can reach it, but my goal is to be able to ride a 40mi race in mid August.

 

I live in Nebraska, so theres lots of corn. The bike trail does go by a lake ~ 6mi from my house, so I'll get there soon I hope.

Feels good to me, saddle is uncomfortable as hell but I imagine I'll wear into that. Derailleur needs to be tweaked a little but other than that I like it

I think I'm hooked. Worked from home today so I could get a ride in on my lunch break due to the supposed rain coming this afternoon. Probably should take a day off to let my body recover a little bit, but I don't really want to.

Trying to figure out a route around here that keeps me off the highways so I can push my distance to 10mi. Been slowly upping my mileage, but I have felt like I could keep going the past few days when I got home. I don't see many people on the roads on bikes, and don't trust the drivers around here enough to get on the highways or bypasses where the speed limits are 50+ just yet.

So, I have a pretty good story from the other night

was headed down the hill from the office, and trail was pretty crowded up by bethesda

slowed to pass a jogger and dude passes me tight to my left, no warning

so he's in front of me and I follow him down the hill.

not up on his shit, but he's not all that fast, so I'm behind him

dude starts spitting

at first i thought he was just spitting to spit, but thne I see him glance over his shoulder and spit

so I'm like 'can you stop spitting?'

spits again

so i fuckng pass him, about a mile from georgetown

I'm going prolly 22, 23 mph at this point

at the tunnel under the canal to georgetown's campus, this young woman on a fixed gear and headphones pulls into the trail

I think I can make it past her on the right, and she's in the middle of the trail, more on the left side than the right, so i tell her "on your right"

she's like "oh fuck" and pulls hard right, right in front of me

I bumped her, I ended up in the bushes

I kinda yelled at her, which I feel bad about now

dude that I passed comes up and starts saying shit to me as he goes past

not "are you guys alright" no, he's like "nice going asshole" or some shit like that

mind you, I had done nothing to this guy other than say "quit spitting on me" and then passing him

my chain was off otherwise I would have chased him down

anyway, I get up on L street and a car left hooks me at conn ave

was in a foul mood at this point so I smacked the shit out of his mirror

friend of mine (cat 2 masters rider) who lives up in a more rural part of Maryland carries on rides.

He also got a bottle thrown at him the other day, got it on video, turned the video over to police, who charged the 17 year old juvenile passenger of the car with 'discharging litter from a vehicle'

Am now looking to purchase a true road bike. Have a Trek store in town plus a couple local bike shops I'm going to check out, but I know the local one I've dealt with before doesn't have a great selection. I looked at the Emonda ALR 4 and Domane ALR 3 at the Trek store today.

Any advice would be appreciated.

 

I'd probably get a Domane over an Emonda if you are choosing between those two. It'll be a bit more versatile, a bit more comfortable, and a better choice for a first true road bike.

 

Took Friday and sat off. Got back out there today as soon as I finished mowing. Didn't really realize the wind picked up until halfway through my ride, decided to just do 6mi today instead of going up a mile from my last ride, turns out that was and awesome choice.

First half, I was riding with the wind to my back. Didn't realize that whatsoever. My phone was calling out my splits to me, and my average at one point was 15mph. I felt pretty good, and was surprised at that number..

Then, I turn around the back of the loop and head home. Into a 30mph wind. Fuck I almost died. Made it home with an average of around 9mph. Feels good now that I'm home, and I finished it without stopping, but fuck that.

 

Hi guys. I'm a beginner. Going to start riding with my buddy and hopefully his cycling crew. Just swooped a used Trek 1.2. Swapping out the tires for gatorskins today and hopefully getting new brakes at some point this week.

 

Did some gravel grinding today and managed to lose my water bottle without even noticing.

That feeling when you need a drink and reach down to...nothing.

 

the absolute fucking worst. was on a long ride last weekend when it was hot. was descending down a mountain when I hit a bump and my water bottle shot out of my cage and rolled off the side of the cliff.

 

Still have one place to checkout that doesn't open until tomorrow, but it looks like my local options are:

Fuck, there's a lot of options.

 

Of those, I'd get the Roubaix if it is within your price range. It's the best frame of those listed, except maybe the Canyon...

But you can't buy Canyon bikes in the U.S. yet, so that one is probably out. And like I said before, I'd probably go with an Endurance geometry, which that Canyon is not.

 

Do any of you take your dogs along for bike rides and have them run along?

 

My thought is just ride along the neighborhood or a park with him leashed. Easy way to tire him out quickly
