Just picked up the present for my wife's birthday tomorrow. She has been wanting to start cycling some with me so now we can. Looks like I have alot of cadence workouts in my future. Once she feels comfortable on it, we will get her some proper pedals & shoes.
my wife killed it tonight for her 1st time on a road bike. 12miles right at 12mph. she only dropped down to the small chainring on the big hill on the way out and back. excited to have a reason to go out for a short slower pace ride once or twice a week. I think it will be good on my legs.
I cranked out 12 miles this morning along A1A, hoping to beat the heat. I did not. Averaged 16.4 mph riding solo, into the wind the entire ride. The Garmin Edge 200, posted above, has worked out great. It picks up GPS signal immediately & can easily swap between my bikes. It's a steal for right around $100 if anyone is looking for GPS CPU.
Did my 32 mile loop this morning starting at 6:30 am. Felt amazing outside. I'm gearing up for another century suffer fest in July.
First ride with my new pedals and shoes. Guess where I was having clip-in/clip-out learning issues. Really enhanced my workout and could feel muscles that were previously unused
I am now an endorser of a drink called Pickle Juice, Sportslegs capsules & Nuun tablets. 1st 50+ mile ride without a single cramp, let alone ride-stopping cramps. Would have gone a little further but ran out of food :( Nice riding everybody, we're killing it!
feels really good actually. my bum doesn't mind the ride after I get about 5 rides in at the start of the year. my lower back though, needs strengthening...
Since we're all posting rides: Headwind for the first 14, rain for the last 3. Idiot trying to pass me 100 ft before a stop sign. Good times.
alright, looking for advice. a couple guys I have ridden with are ratcheting up their training for their Ironman 140.6 late next month. they want me to go with them next weekend for a 2 loop 100 mi ride featuring 5000'+ of climb. should I do it? i don't know if I am ready for it yet. they asked me to go because I push their pace on the 50 mile rides and make them attack the hills more than they normally would if I was not there. my concerns are that my longest ride this year is 72mi and my biggest climb ride has been 1700'+, both this past Saturday. I guess I always have the option of closing up shop at 50mi but if I continue, what kind of damage could I look at doing to myself (barring injury, more along the lines of muscle fatigue and exhaustion)?
I need a total new front wheel and tire. What's my best best to get one that matches my back for the best price? doing it online myself or should I just go into a local bike shop and let them handle it? it got stolen, FYI.
Finished three seconds short of hitting a 15.0 mph average for the first time yesterday. Was out on a mission today.
nicely done MA . It's pretty cool how quickly you progress on a road bike as long as you are committed to getting the rides in.
Awesome ride this morning from a physical pov but mechanically & mentally it was a total failure. Stopped at just over 58 miles as I was afraid if I kept on going I would either kill myself, my bike or both. 1st incident about 4 miles into the ride on a downhill developed the worst case of front wheel wobble I have ever ridden through or even seen. The guy behind me was completely shocked I didn't go down. I have no clue what caused it as we had steeper and faster downhills. 2 theories are still lingering. I got my weight to far over the handlebars or it had something to do with being on a elevated bridge like span on the downhill, something similar to when you run on a bridge and feel the sway. We thought it maybe had something to do with new tubes and tires but we flipped the bike and detected no wobble whatsoever when spinning the wheels. Still haven't fully regained my downhill confidence even though we hit at least a dozen more solid downhills on the ride. Next big issue was chain/derailer/ring/gear. Chain popped off and started wrapping around the rear hub, effectively bringing my bike to a screeching halt. Once again, don't know how I stayed upright. Bent some spokes, had to unlink the chain and do a full wheel and chain removal to correct the issue. 35+ minutes in the grass on the side of the road to address that issue. It looks like minimally I will need new wheels, chain (we had to remove a bent link) and drastic tuning as every component on the drive train was wound up and torqued to max on that incident. With those 2 big episodes mixed in with multiple other chain droppages that couldn't be addressed on the go with the derailer, spent over an hour on the side attending to my bike. So, good news is still got a decent workout in. Fuck this cycling is going to get even more expensive really quick. Any of you guys want to sponsor me for recreational purposes? Spoiler: deets also, 44mph is very very fast on a bike
nasty, nasty things can start happening when going downhill fast. i got hit by a bee once going 48 mph down a mountain. left a welt on my face for a week.
Just one ride has left me fully empathizing with Pinot's downhill issues (not that I will ever know what it's like to ride on that level but still). Damn that be scary AF when things start going wrong and gravity and momentum are just saying FU this train is already a rolling.
Awesome, one of my riding buddies just sent me these and said "show your wife these pics to help convince her to let you dump some more money into your bike"
bumping for this, or how much you guys think a whole new wheel, tire and tube costs. trying to brace myself
Assuming you aren't trying to get anything special, it shouldn't be that expensive. Maybe $50-$100 for everything.
i peaked at about 39 mph on my tri ride. makes me want to find a bigger hill and faster bike i hit 40 mph when i was like 14 on a downhill somewhere out here in KS and my bike was vibrating like mad. young me was a bit afraid but too stupid to care.
if my seat post sometimes slides down, and I've wiped the grease off of it, do I just need to tighten it? It is a quick release
Someone recommend a seat that won't feel like I got a full John Daley tee shot in the taint. My wife and I bought ridiculous ($900 each) bikes at Christmas to be less fat. First time I rode a bike in probably 20 years was Tuesday and it still hurts.
Biking shorts will help. Even if you get the most comfortable seat on the market your ass just has to get used to it. Just takes time
My garage was broken into last night, my road bike and mountain bike were stolen. Just called the cops to report. Hopefully my insurance will cover this. Road bike's value is like 3200. I'm so fucking pissed
Go to a local bike store and have them measure your sit bones. Make sure your seat is the correct width. Past that, biking shorts will help. You'll just have to wear your ass in a bit.
my buddy I ride regularly with broke his clavicle this morning when he got his tire caught in a road crack and went down. all the training for his Ironman in a couple of weeks down the toilet. it's a fun hobby we have guys, enjoy the road when it is good.
any chance somebody followed you home? do you do the same route frequently? something similar has been happening in NE.
Do you have renters/homeowners insurance? That would be covered, although I'm not sure if there is a limit on bikes like there is with firearms and electronics.
I think that's definitely what happened. My house is about 50 yards from a really popular hike and bike path. I usually do my cool down from longer rides on that path (couple times a week). My LBS owner told me that a couple other clients had their bikes stolen too--just the bikes and nothing else.
that fucking sucks. Just had my wheel stolen a few weeks ago. Just one wheel. People are faggots. I hope you catch them. My wheel is red so I am looking all over for it, hope to spot the guy
Sucks about the stolen bikes. My shoulder / ribs situation means I can't ride for at least another 3 or 4 weeks. Driving me crazy. Here's an article about North Korean bike lanes. http://www.citylab.com/commute/2015...s-building-bike-lanes/398510/?utm_source=SFFB
Interesting article. I've been known to carry more shit with me on a 4 hour ride in the early spring. Transcontinental bike race: Josh Ibbett’s bike and equipment You need to travel light when you're racing from Flanders to Istanbul http://road.cc/content/news/158492-transcontinental-bike-race-josh-ibbett-s-bike-and-equipment Spoiler Also, been out on a couple of very short ~5-10 mile rides the past week to test the ribs / shoulder. Not exactly recommended by my Dr, but I figure it's alright provided I'm taking it easy and not in any pain. Will probably regret this when I have debilitating arthritis in my shoulder.
