I listened to a podcast bio about McConnell and one of the anecdotes was that McConnell dreaded meeting with Obama because Obama would always try to make arguments, as if saying the right words were going to change McConnell's mind. I think about that whenever Obama drops an optimism bomb. McConnell much preferred working with Biden, because Biden didn't waste his time
When Republicans are in charge, they make a big deal about how they retire to closed door meetings and come out with the bill that will be voted on by the senate/house. They are explicitly partisan in their approach.

tbh i don't think the US had much credibility on a global level, the US international posturing was for domestic reasons imo. i kind of fall back on material interests for all of the diplomatic/projecting power wrangling . western neoliberal hegemony has failed (or succeeded based on whether you're a 1%'er or not) and we'll get to deal with the fallout. we will be surpassed by china as a global superpower though. ymmv on how you think that works out.

The State Department was the source of projected power globally and that, in general, benefitted Americans - though obviously not equally. Trump dismantling the State Department, abandoning allies, and focusing on an internal enemies list has likely made that not possible moving forward. Most Americans will be - at least a little - worse off as a result. The wealthy will still be fine. They always are.

This is fundamentally missing his argument - that he’s been voting and there hasn’t been positive change despite that. The greatest changes that have happened since the civil rights act have likely come more because of societal pressure as a result of popular culture - not because of voting.
Literally untrue. The courts make law by ruling based on societal pressures all the time. People lose their jobs because of societal pressures. Marginalized people gain a voice because of societal pressure. Legislators aren’t involved in any of that.
