It’s as dead as the Dem chances in 2022 and 2024. Is it really fascism when the opposition party hands you power? At this point just get your judges confirmed and wait for Biden to get impeached. Great job moderates, you shit stains.
Once they’re broke they’ll have to accept these slave wages. Here’s your big tent opposition to the blatantly racist party. Vote blue y’all.
That's true. Either there or hiding from constituents in the ladies room. Let's get this country back to normal!
It’s amazing how quickly their talk went from “look how much we are helping the impoverished” to “people will work for whatever once they are broke.” A simple message of “labor will improve once people are able to work without fear of being assaulted for asking someone to put on their mask or once they are our enough to pay rent” but their business daddies don’t like that.
Interesting this person is not waiting for the current term to run out so they can write a tell all book.
I have decided my plan of action for if I ever find myself amidst a group of people chanting Fuck Joe Biden and there isn’t a handy knife to stab myself with for landing myself in such company: “Fuck Joe Rogan” on repeat. It’s foolproof.
The alternative I’ve thought of is really loudly screaming YEAH and trying to make it “Fuck YEAH Joe Biden”.
I've always wondered what would happen if the fed govt subsidized R&D for the pharma companies but also capped salaries of upper management at $150k/year. I'm sure they'd find a way to siphon off the R&D money to 'reinvest' in the company.
A lot of R&D is already a downstream product of federal research grants. Then big pharma companies buy up the small research group that has the interesting IP. Drug development is a weird partially federally subsidized mess of profit seeking. And we don’t get any ownership of the meds we helped fund into existence. The whole process is fucked and needs scrapping.
Insufferable. I remain royally pissed that the AZ Senate seats are not flipped so we could bin Sinema next year rather than three years from now.
they are coordinating this political rope a dope where they take turns saying no and stalling…no respect for Biden who could go to Europe with all his climate proposals scrapped
“How are we going to pay for all this?!” “individuals and corporations?” “no!!!!1!” “the richest people on the planet?” “no!!!!!!!!” “There are no other options. Trillion dollar coin?” TBD The obvious truth is they want nothing to get done because that is the GOP platform and they are nothing more than GOP senators.
they probably want to delay till next Wednesday and are rooting for Youngkin to win to walk away from both bills.
minimum corp tax i thought would be dicier than the billionaire tax still think there will be a bridge from billionaire tax and manchin wanting higher tax rates on the super rich
I’m so tired of manchin and Sinema. I’m just rooting for something awful to happen to Sinema at this point. As I think that would make working with manchin easier
I know I’ve said this to people in real life and possibly I’ve posted it on here, but this is all political theater bullshit. You could pass a law tomorrow saying that billionaires have to pay a 100% tax rate on any earnings over $1 million and they would never in actuality pay a cent more after that law goes into effect than they do today. The ultra ultra wealthy just don’t fucking pay taxes. They’ll pay $5 million a year on a team of lawyers and accountants who will make sure they don’t pay even $500,000 in taxes. It’s the middle class assholes that get fucked.
i always get confused when our more centristy posters have these takes this is explicitly an anti-capitalist conclusion
My overarching view is that I am skeptical of power. I do not think that as a whole human beings are equipped to handle power responsibly. Which is why I don’t subscribe to any “pure” economic or social philosophies. The libertarian pipe dream that unfettered capitalism will result in invisible handjobs for everyone is as much of a joke as the communist pipe dream of a mutual aid Utopia. And left to it’s own devices unrestrained capitalism results in the same abuse and oppression to others as hardcore conservatives fear communism does.
you're arguing you can't restrain capitalism though, that redistribution is impossible and capital capture of the political systems is inevitable its a very popular take, for all kinds of brands of lefties not just communists
I’m saying that in a capitalist system that’s always the risk. Redistribution of some sort is necessary, but you have to have mechanisms in place to enforce it. And we only have those on paper because we have a bunch of cowards in power who suck at the teats of those whose wealth should be redistributed. And by redistribution I mean appropriately taxed without any loopholes. Am I anti-human? I probably skew that way in terms of humanity as a whole, or at least human institutions. I believe there are very good individual people in the world who do right by their fellow man. Unfortunately, there is a high enough percentage of shitheads that will seek to — and succeed at — corrupting institutions such that all frameworks will eventually fail if not constantly tweaked.
Not really. They may pay a little more but not much. US billionaires make up 36% of the Forbes top 100. 64% comes from other places. France, Germany, Italy, China, Russia and Australia are all well represented on that list. That is a pretty broad political spectrum with all creating very wealthy people.
We're not talking about taxing them much here, either. Countries can still have billionaires and tax them higher than they do here.
If billionaires wouldn’t pay higher taxes, they wouldn’t buy politicians to keep them from raising taxes on billionaires.
And, we're talking about them not paying any taxes now. If it prompted a 5% cooperation rate, that's still billions in new tax revenue.
