I’ve flown from Eugene to Portland, and Portland to Eugene more times than I’m comfortable with. I think it’s a 25 minute deal. :/
You really want to bet on that though? They are all power hungry pieces of shit. Passing a watered down bill that contains none of the demands he guaranteed to the insurrectionist wing of the party will mean he probably loses the job he's been auditioning for for years.
Unfortunately most in the US think Amtrak is the best you can get from train travel. Takes me 5-6 hrs to drive to New Orleans. 12 hours by train. It's 450 miles. Should be like 3.5 hours on a high speed train with 3-4 stops.
It's really amazing how these fucking morons have had complete control over their schools and education dept for decades, but all of a sudden it's infiltrated by "woke-ism"
For example, London to Edinburgh, which is about the same distance, takes 8 hours to drive and about 4.5 by train. Paris to Montpelier (about 500 miles) takes 3.5 by train and 7.5 by car.
That’s pretty bad and I understand why you’d drive. Trains in the Northeast corridor (Boston to DC) can take longer than driving, depending on the time of day and traffic, but not that much longer. But I would fly anywhere north of Boston because of the same issue- local rail service up there moves a lot slower.
Would love a high speed rail system in this country. Efficient public transportation is awesome and it's a testament to the stupidity of the people in this country that more aren't clamoring for it. Tampa would actually be an ideal candidate for a robust rail system and water taxis to better connect downtown Tampa, downtown St Pete, and the beaches. Instead we have a river taxi that's wildly overpriced and a cross bay ferry that's $24 roundtrip and runs every 90 minutes. It's pathetic.
There are so many perfect pockets for High Speed rail. What's amazing is the railroads literally already showed us and gave the blue-prints where they should be. We have it in place. Draw 300-500 miles radius around DC, Chicago, Atlanta and you have rail connectivity for like 70% of our population. SF to SD should be it's own line. Toss in some connections from S Fl or Dallas to ATL or the Midwest. Would be amazing
America’s unique obsession with suburban development is a big issue in the way. In most countries with developed rail systems they have urban and rural, with much less suburban development than we do. Support for creating an effective rail system is more likely when populations are concentrated in urban areas. Once you get into suburban sprawl, trains become less efficient and convenient as more stops are needed and/or people need to commute to rail stations by car. Just another aspect of the legacy of the suburbs and their racist origins.
When our kids were younger, we thought it might be fun to take a train from Cincinnati to Washington DC, then see the sites on a four day weekend. Train ran once a week, cost $70 per person ($350 total) and it was an 16 hour trip. 7.5 by car, and half that in gas.
Ohio Senate 2024: Sherrod Brown (D) is seeking a fourth term, first elected 2006. He caught the best D cycle in Ohio politics in 35+ years in 2006, literally the only time a D governor has won since 1986. Caught Obama coattails in 2012 and the blue wave in 2018. He’s in trouble in 2024. The R side has Matt Dolan, who finished third in the 2022 primary at 23.3% to JD Vance at 32.2%. Bernie Moreno was endorsed by Vance today, he’s a Cleveland businessman. Secretary of State Frank LaRose will enter, but it’s unclear whether Trump will kill him. Whomever Trump endorses will win.
your post just reminded me that I saw John boehner at the airport this week. Wish I could’ve made a quip but alas.
I wonder how frustrated Europeans get trying to plan a trip to the U.S. and realize they can't just take high speed trains between cities.
I got married in Orlando. My family from overseas didn’t understand why i was telling them they couldn’t just fly into Miami (which is way cheaper) and take a train to Orlando.
Speaking of Transit.... As Cobb prepares transit plans for 2024, opponents push back https://archive.is/fmcRh Oh boy at this quote and the dog whistle/horn
Can't tell you the times i heard that "They need to reform Milton County" as a kid growing up in North DeKalb. White Flight never stops
Group of people in Roswell / Alpharetta / John’s Creek pushed hard for Milton County about 15 years ago. I remember bumper stickers and yard signs that said “Milton County NOW!” Because these racist imbeciles said “they” paid for Grady, the airport and Marta.
Boehner has become irrelevant. He tried to fundraise for Anthony Gonzalez, Cleveland area former OSU WR who was one of the few GOP congressmen who voted to impeach. No one gave and Gonzalez withdrew rather than get primaried.
Have had European friends say renting a car and road tripping is part of the American experience. Hard to argue with that considering like, 90% of American culture is embodied in our highway rest stops.
No terms yet? Assuming it's what was reported since Thursday I can t wait to see McCarthy get eaten alive after the vote
Agreement hopefully puts those purple NYers on the defensive, saying no looks a lot worse when it’s on you to say yes and the important players have agreed
The reports last week was the IRS funding was getting cut, defense was staying at bidens budget level and everything else was frozen at this year's funding levels
Now gotta peel off the people who only live in half reality as opposed to the MTG Jewish space laser and weather machine types.
