Was saying that to KJROD20 last night. I feel like they practically rushed through everything. No idea how screenwriters are able to write an entire book into a ~2 hour movie. 7 hour mini-series and I'm complaining about the bits and pieces that were left out. Spoiler That said, I feel like the reveal at the end could be a pretty quick moment - spending the whole episode leading up to it.
Thought it was posted ITT but must have read this theory elsewhere. It's my current operating theory as it ties everything together nicely. Spoilers aren't actual, just a guess, but some people don't like having thoughts put in their head. Something that happened in this episode confirmed it even more for me. If you've read the book plz don't confirm or deny. Spoiler I'm increasingly sure it was Perry who raped Jane. When he didn't make it to the play this week, it increased my suspicion because they've never met or been in the same place. He's out of town on business all the time and it fits with his character. Celeste tells Madeline that she's been getting abused on advise of her therapist. Everyone shows up at the gala and Jane comes to Madeline and says "Ziggy's dad is here." Madeline asks her who it is, finds out it's Perry. We'll obviously get the reveal it was the twins who have been hurting Amabella, further incensing Jane. Madeline kills Perry for hurting her friends. Could also see Adam Scott murdering Perry in an emotional state after finding out Madeline was cheating, but the plot lines to get there are a little more murky.
I think that's mostly accurate as to what's going to happen although Adam Scott already knows she cheated. She was in the process of telling him and he stopped her because he didn't want to hear it but he knows what went down
My wife missed it too, we had to rewind to confirm. I wonder if Adam Scott gets tired of begin cast as "soft little bitch" in everything although I'm sure the money helps
Totally weird scene, I get that she was trying to "relate" and prove she's not perfect. To me that example made sense, but your daughter is 16 - she really needs to hear that? It also pisses me off because it's one of the few things they added that wasn't in the book, but completely changes Madeline's character.
It's just the self important drama that drives me crazy. Ok. You fucked around on your husband. Either tell him about it or carry it like an adult. Either way, it's between you and him. Don't fucking share your guilt / grief with your own child. I liked her character up until that happened.
Yeah I agree. IMO her character was super likeable in the book, iffy in the show until yesterday's episode, and now - bleh. I got that impression too.
If Perry is Jane's attacker and Jane shoots him at the fundraiser, that will be the worst possible ending. More likely: Spoiler Jane realizes Perry is the attacker and somehow Celeste kills Perry. Ideal ending: Spoiler Celeste and Madeline go lesbo and scissor for about 20 minutes.
All that aside, Perry is showing some real restraint from going after Nicole's True Blood. She would have been sucked dry a few years ago.
Don't open if you haven't finished the finale. Spoiler That fucking sucked. Predictable and trite. What a waste.
Spoiler Zoe Kravitz's character doing it was a little dumb (a completely unforeseen twist that doesn't pay off from anything shown earlier) but I didn't think it was bad. The twins and Perry being the assailants surprised no one, I'm sure. The thing that bugged me most is that Madeline's entire character was a red herring. She had no purpose in the story but to distract. Entire story could have been told without her and her husband, ex and his wife
Spoiler why does everything have to be a shock and awe thing. I would much rather have something finish out that makes sense to the story then something thrown in at the end just to shock the audience
Spoiler I don't know. I just thought it was a letdown. But, to your point, Bonnie pushing him made no sense. Perry being the attacker and one of the twins being the bully was just so damn predictable. Season was good, characters were great, finale was flat.
Spoiler ehh throughout the episode you could tell Bonnie was gonne be involved somehow, and when she saw a group of people she so desperately wanted to be a part of needed help she ran to the rescue. Some shows will not have some True Detective mindfuck going on, some stories are just simple flat lines that go from point A to point B and thats it. Like I said in my first post, the theme was obviously #girlpower
You are clearly looking past the symbolism. Go watch traveling pants sisterhood and maybe you'll be where you need to be. Not to mention they set it up Sapranos style or maybe for a season two (I'm assuming cops aren't happy).
Spoiler the post credit scene with the director or producer or whatever made it seem like it isnt over and then the last scene with the detective looking through the binoculars at the women on the beach
Spoiler FWIW, it makes more sense from the book version because it goes into how Bonnie saw her mom and her family get beaten and abused by her father. So when she saw what he was doing there and hitting all those women, it was a visceral reaction that had the same result.
Spoiler Also, let's not forget that this book/story was written by a "girl power" type author. We aren't talking your typical murder mystery writer here. I don't think you should expect all that much in the twist department.
Yea, that may have been a small oversight, but maybe it was mentioned in passing and I forgot about it?
Spoiler MORBO! said exactly what I was going to say. Based on the book it made a lot more sense for Bonnie to do it. Agreed that it was super obvious Perry was the attacker and one of the twins as the bully, also contrary to the book (Perry as the attacker came off as a HUGE "oh shit!" moment in the book). That's TV though, it'd be really hard to make it not obvious based on his character and the amount of time to portray all the necessary characteristics to link him. IMO anyway.
Watching a tv show with a week between each episode makes it easier to figure shit out. Also, because internet. I'm hoping there's a season 2. A lot of folks in Hollywood want it. These stars are affordable by hbo and aren't doing too many movies. They are A listers but all hot talent is going to TV. So I think expanding on the book is brilliant, even doing more stories in town. The term "big little lies" can go for a bit
Where would this show go for a Season 2? I realize HBO was able to go past a book with The Leftovers but that had a built in mythology to work with. Once you get past the murder mystery what's left for the story? Seems like it would be nothing more than a prime time soap.
Nah. They should have left us in suspense if that was the case. Go check out The Falling on Netflix if your in mood for a detective show. They could do a season 2 with a new murder and add some characters. And switch the show over to lifetime. goodbye big little lies.
If there's a season 2, it should be with an entirely new storyline and an entirely new group of superstars, a la True Detective. There's just nowhere to go with a season 2 with this story and cast.
this is why imo, doing the "watch the show, scour the internet and read tons of articles an explainers" version of TV world we're in can suck you either have to have a show that doesn't give you enough hints to figure out anything close to the ending so theres really no payoff, or it feels cheap that they didn't set it up well or it seems too obvious if you read the internet hive mind figuring everything out ahead of time you have an impossible task making a show to thread that needle. I read nothing about this show along the way and it was dope as fuck, they definitely should have included the Bonnie back story though because that did feel a little weird and would have made more sense with what jaimej said
This was one of the books for TMB Book Club. This is also one of the few books I just had to stop reading because I hated it so much. Glad I watched the show. It was good. Most of the book was all the moms just gossiping and complaining about each other and I couldn't take it. The show did a good job of displaying that catty-ness while focusing on the more interesting things.
Haha sorry about that, I made KJROD20 read it and thought it was good for a reco for you guys. He did say the book got annoying at times because all the women were basically insufferable, but it was worth it for the payoff at the end.
It wasn't THAT bad. It's such a quick read that I can't imagine I would have just put it down. It took me at most two nights to read the dang thing.
