Mandel referenced Connelly’s work earlier this week in a mailbag he did, and considering the Athletic is in another hiring blitz, it makes sense to get someone who could open up a whole new stream of subscribers. I’ll be bummed if he ends up anywhere else.
i was pessimistic that a pay subscription service would work with so much free content out there but they seem to have timed it perfectly when that free content quality was largely awful and they did a great job hiring really really well I'm begrudgingly going to pay for it soon I suspect
I too want Bill at the Athletic, but Godfrey saying its not. Other than ESPN, which other media outlets would be this protectionist about Bill's podcasting services.
I'm sorry but why would he leave SBN for The athletic. It has to be a bigger job. Wouldn't make sense for a lateral move
I bet he’s making 50k at most at SBN. If he went to the Athletic, I bet he gets close to 70. Everything I’ve read is the Athletic is very competitive with pay.
It's totally worth it. And given all the promos they run, you really never gave to pay full price for it, at least for the first year
Athletic is definitely a bigger job than sbn. And I'd imagine he'd be getting a promotion in title and pay raise, if he's going to the athletic.
Of course, it’s his. But it’s nice for ESPN to have that under their umbrella while he’s there given how badly their metrics suck. I phrased my initial statement horribly.
Good for him. Hate the move. Can’t stand the ESPN website or app. Or really anything On ESPN other than the games and game day.
Because the rest of Vox (SBN, Eater, Curbed, etc) had all gone downhill to useless content. It can't be lucrative being the one outlier.
The Athletic is awesome. Basically the Sports Illustrated of 50 years ago. Well worth the subscription. That's not lateral from SBN.
