When serving time, you’ll do anything for a chance at freedom—even if that means facing a suspected killer. Inspired by true events, Dennis Lehane’s newest Apple Original Series stars Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser. Black Bird arrives July 8 on Apple TV+ https://apple.co/_BlackBird Inspired by actual events, when high school football hero and decorated policeman’s son Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton) is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum security prison, he is given the choice of a lifetime — enter a maximum-security prison for the criminally insane and befriend suspected serial killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser), or stay where he is and serve his full sentence with no possibility of parole. Keene quickly realizes his only way out is to elicit a confession and find out where the bodies of several young girls are buried before Hall’s appeal goes through. But is this suspected killer telling the truth? Or is it just another tale from a serial liar? This dramatic and captivating story subverts the crime genre by enlisting the help of the very people put behind bars to solve its mysteries. Ensemble cast includes Taron Egerton, Paul Walter Hauser, Sepideh Moafi, Greg Kinnear and Ray Liotta. Black Bird is developed and executive produced by Lehane. The first three episodes are directed by Academy Award nominee Michaël R. Roskam (“Bullhead,” “The Drop”), who also serves as executive producer. Lehane, Egerton and Roskam executive produce alongside Richard Plepler through his EDEN Productions; Bradley Thomas, Dan Friedkin and Ryan Friedkin executive produce through Imperative Entertainment; Alexandra Milchan and Scott Lambert executive produce through EMJAG Productions; and Kary Antholis also executive produces, along with the book’s author James Keene. Jim McKay and Joe Chappelle also direct. The limited series is produced for Apple TV+ by Apple Studios.
First 3 episodes were really good. The really nailed how stupid cops are for letting a serial killer go after he confessed to being a serial killer. I think the brother might have been in on the killings too though.
I thought I saw that it was a true story but I wasn't sure if I remembered that correctly or not. I didn't want to Wikipedia it and spoil anything for myself like I did with Under the Banner of Heaven.
binged 3 eps last night. very big fan and the guy that plays larry is sneaky good i'm also on the "brother may be an accomplice" train so far
Man the latest episode is one of the hardest episodes of television I’ve ever watched. I very nearly abandoned ship
So I’m usually awful at spotting twists in shows so y’all let me know if this is supposed to be smacking us in the face or I’m overthinking it. Spoiler The brother being involved in the assaults/deaths some way. Hell could it go so far as to Larry simply disposing of the bodies for his brother?
no - it’s a true story and not full of weird twists. story below in spoiler Spoiler jimmy confronts larry about a map that allegedly locates the bodies, and gets thrown in solitary as a response. The FBI never gets the message and larry destroys the map. they kept him in prison for life for kidnapping resulting in death but not for any murder. The fbi thinks he may be responsible for 40 or so deaths
Definitely enjoying this show so far. The entire cast is great, but Paul Walter Hauser really stands out.
Finale was good, show was good. Not sure if I’d recommend to binge or watch weekly, probably was better with some time off in between episodes due to how heavy some of them were. I don’t wanna read more into the story for fear it didn’t turn out as “well” as it did in the show.
Read this after watching the show https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/ustv/a40678987/black-bird-killer-larry-hall-true-story/
Started this last night and it’s great. I knew the actor that plays the killer but didn’t know his name just from seeing him in other movies/shows. He’s really good
just binged it. some pretty dumb/frustrating things (always being interrupted whenever larry would start giving details) and some tough watches (just emotionally) but i thought it was good. fuck gary forever. and prison guards.
Not directly related to the show, but this pod with Paul Walter hauser was a good listen https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podca...rian-baumgartner/id1550331348?i=1000580778536
