Who knows... The author probably doesn't like working that much, and is enjoying the money he continues to make off of Shantaram.
A couple years ago a seemingly ex-military dude started writing stories on the Something Awful message boards. His stories about the goings-on in a barracks in Germany became so popular that they got collected and, with his blessing, they got published and are being sold on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Humper-Monkey-John-McCarthy/dp/0557708834 The stories themselves are somewhat easily found online, but there's nothing quite like reading ghost stories while in bed or on the can on from a hardcover book. Not a deep read by any stretch, but definitely fun
