The Heroes - Really enjoyed this one. Great battle scenes.

The Kremlin's Candidate - re-read. Still awesome and my favorite espionage series.

The Compound - A quasi dystopian thriller about a Love Island type reality show where the contestants not only have to pair up to stay in the game, but also complete tasks to be provided things necessary to survive. Picked it on whim, looking for something easy between heavier reads. It was nothing special but served it's purpose.

Came across this one when I was looking for a book set in Bloomington (we're taking a road trip next month and this is a stop on it). I thought it was about a real life disappearance case, which it kind of is based on. I didn't really read much about it (I'm sure I read the description when I bought it) and it kind of threw me for a loop as I read and it turned into Stephen King-ish when I was expecting something more based in a natural setting than supernatural. Still enjoyed it.

    26- Butcher’s Crossing – John Williams (10/10)*
27- South of Nogales – Steve Mensing (1/10)

28- Retreat from Oblivion – David Goodis (8/10)
Published in 1939, it was the first novel Goodis published and revolves around a group of young NYC residents at the onset of World War II. It’s a sociopolitical story where everyone is depressed because of their relationships and the rise of fascism abroad. The characters confront their personal problems against this backdrop of world chaos

29- They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? – Horace McCoy (9/10)
Published in 1935, it’s an existentialist novel set in LA during the Great Depression. It focuses on a depressed woman and a man with dreams of breaking into the movies as they participate in a dance marathon in hopes of winning the cash prize. It’s a short and bleak parable about American life during the Depression. The movie adaptation starred Jane Fonda and was nominated for nine Academy Awards

    30- The Grifters – Jim Thompson (7/10)
Published in 1963, it’s a noir crime novel set in LA about a short con man who was raised by a mother working a long con. One of his go-to schemes goes wrong and he finds his life thrown into disarray. Betrayal and deception are the central themes. John Cusack starred in the movie adaptation, which has a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes

    31- Miami Blues – Charles Willeford (8.5/10)
Published in 1984, it’s an extremely hard-boiled detective novel about a sociopath who is released from San Quentin and heads to Miami to start a new career in crime. Hoke Moseley of the Miami PD makes it his mission to take him off the streets. It was adapted into a movie starring Alec Baldwin. Will be checking out the rest of the installments in this series

32- Life of Pi – Yann Martel (7/10)
Winner of the 2002 Booker Prize, it’s about an Indian boy who explores his faith at a young age and then relies on his belief system to survive over 200 days at sea on a life raft after being shipwrecked. I really enjoyed the section recounting his time at sea but there was some magical realism and religious philosophy that drew me out of what was otherwise a neat adventure story

33- Rear Window: And Four Short Novels – Cornell Woolrich (8.5/10)
It’s a collection of five stories that all got adapted for film or television by Alfred Hitchcock. Someone recommended Woolrich to me because I’ve gotten into noir/crime novels and I can see why he’s considered one of the great American authors of the genre. Tacked on an additional half-point because I finished the last few stories on top of my favorite mountain in Sedona this past weekend :ohgosh:

    9. Before they are hanged; Abercrombie (8/10); not much more to add here. Abercrombie keeps getting better with each book, and it’s a great series.

    10. Last argument of Kings; Abercrombie (8.5/10); see above

    11. Sometimes a Great Notion; Kesey; This book broke my brain and not in a good way. It’s a jumbled mess and the constant changing of pov just makes it a difficult and unenjoyable read. For as good as one flew over the cuckoo’s nest was, this is equally as bad.

12 - 14. The Age of Madness series; Abercrombie (8/10); another great series and the story telling just keeps getting better and better. I need to read the devils asap.

    15. Martyr!; Akbar (7.5/10); a good, short read that tackles some complicated issues - love and death being the overriding themes.

    16. Glorious Exploits; Lennon (7.5/10); a historical fiction (but light on history) that is set from the Peloponnesian war where Athenians were held prisoner in Sicily. Both silly and serious, this was a fun read.

Currently reading Lost Man’s Lane, and it’s been a great little mystery.

Taking suggestions for something to read after that, as Sometimes a great notion almost took me a month to read and I didn’t want to read for a while after that.

The writing was great and easy to read. Short at around 240 pages, the closer I got to the end the more I was expecting some sort of bigger reveal that I didn't get, so it fell a bit flat for me in that regard. But, it did give me a possible idea for a book that could be cool if I ever get around to trying to write one in the future.

    35) Slaying The Badger: Greg LeMond, Bernard Hinault, and the Greatest Tour de France 7/10

Had more back story on people that I really didn't care about than the actual race itself.

    Dream Hotel -
Near future dystopian novel where citizens have all their data compiled into a threat score. If your threat score is high enough you can be detained to prevent future crimes. Basically Minority Report but an algorithm instead of pre-cogs. This novel hit hard w current events. Social commentary on the police state, for profit prisons ect. Cant say I enjoyed it. I dont think youre supposed to, but it was an engrossing read.

Star Wars - The Final installment of The High Republic Series. Although Im sure they'll find a way to do more in that era. The series had it's peaks and valleys. Like most Star Wars these days not named Andor - it left more interesting questions lingering than satisfying conclusions. :comicbookguy:

    27. Murderland by Caroline Fraser - 6/10. This was so disjointed. Part recounting of serial killers from the PNW (Bundy, BTK, etc) part corporate/environmental history of smelters in the area and subsequent lead output from this. The author links lead exposure to an increase in serial killers from the area. So that’s the basis of the book but then you have part memoir about the author recounting growing up in the area with digressions about her hardass dad coupled with a history of a dangerous bridge in the area. It’s too much. And the main thesis isn’t wholly convincing either…an interesting idea for a book that was incredibly researched. Think it just fell a bit short

The final boss fancy level is when you have your books bound in matching binding and get marbling on the edges of the pages

Ever seen something like that? Certain books had a hidden image on the edge of the pages and you had to spread them out to see the top of each page and the image appears. Evidently called a fore-edge painting.

Going to get back into reading this year, so catching up in this thread. May start with the Red Sparrow novels, as they seem right up my alley Truman

Were you not still in HS when this was the all-school summer read? Basically one summer reading book that everyone read. I think I was still in the lower school at the time and definitely did not appreciate the book as much as I should have.

I don't think we were doing the all-school read when I was there. I definitely didn't have this assigned as a summer read, although I was such a shithead back then I probably wouldn't have read it anyway
