Been a while since I updated here. Managed to read 46 books so far this year, and probably have one more before the year ends. I will say, being online substantially less and reading more has been a major positive, and something I will continue doing. The Devil by Name (Rosson) - sequel to fever house, and an entertaining action/horror. Golden Son - Light Bringer (Brown) - for anyone that hasn’t read the red rising series, you should make it a priority to do so. I need the final book asap. chasing the boogeyman (chizmar) - entertaining mystery book. True Grit (Portis) - fun, quick read and surprisingly the movies stay pretty true to the book. James (Everett) - one of my favorite reads this year. Read it. Table for Two (Towles) - I’ll read anything Towles writes, but this was less successful for me than his other works. Still entertaining. 11/22/63 (King) - I’ve read plenty of king, but this is different than so much of his other works, and a truly enjoyable read. Stoner (Williams) - didn’t love it as much as the rest of you.
amen I'd bet anything I spent more time reading in beautiful outdoors environments this year than 99% of Americans. Was really good for me

Such an good book. I dove in not realizing how massive it was. The Hulu series was a bit of a let down. James Franco didn't help.
The best part is when they run train on Sadie in the caves to remember for if Pennywise comes back in the future.
This is why number of books goals are wack. This is a fun, relaxing hobby. Dont turn it into a stressful chore or a to-do list!
Haha yeah I’m not looking at it as a chore. I’m not going to reach it because my average book this year is like 37 pages longer than last year
Im also a hypocrite. Noticed I was in the mid 70s and decided to knock off some shorter books that have been languishing on my TBR just to hit 80. Feels like a nice round number
Storygraph actually keeps track, but I think my year is messed up because I uploaded everything from GR. maybe next year
Anyone make a to-read list going into the next year? I have one with sections for South Carolina, music, fiction, rereads, and other (all the other nonfiction stuff I like). I always deviate from the list but it's fun taking stock going into a new year.
-Candide -Train Dreams -The Postman Always Rings Twice -Double Indemnity Are all good books and quick reads. Trying to think what else.
i have the absolute worst method of doing that. i just buy it and stick it on one of the bookshelves we have and generally forget about it for months
My tbr list is in the hundreds though. I like making a separate list of what I might actually get to soon. I guess I have a “to read” and a “read soon/read next” list
I'm working on a spreadsheet of what books I own; that'll be another way to keep track. One, it's just fun and I'm curious. Two, it's a way to keep track of what I own if anything ever goes missing or I forget where I put something. I've added two of my home shelves and my work shelf and I have around 350 so far. Thinking my whole collection will come to 800-1000. And I've read 50% at best.

Project Hail Mary - Andy Weir (8/10) Up Next: Wool - Hugh Howey 16 pales in comparison to the majority here but it’s the most books I’ve read in a year so I’m proud of it. Goal is to double the number next year. Less doomscrolling more reading.
Majority came from recommendations here. I have a long TBR list just from what I’ve seen shared in this thread.

Tevinter Nights by various writers 7/10 30. The Art Thief by Michael Finkel This is by far one of the more interesting non fiction pieces I’ve read this year, but it’s a short read that doesn’t delve too much into background details in a way I would like. This is the story of possibly the most prodigious art thief in human history, Stephanè Breitweiser, and his partner who helped him steal roughly 2 billion USD worth of renaissance art across seven European nations. Every theft happened in the middle of the day during museum visiting hours. The guy just took shit out of displays and off walls while no one was looking and never attempted to sell any of it, he just loved stealing art to keep it around for himself. 8/10.
Got stuck on Blood Meridian and couldn't get through it. Hate leaving books unfinished so I just kind of stopped. May do the Stormlight reread.

Batman: Resurrection - John Jackson Miller (6.5/10) Stoner - Good change of pace novel for me. enjoyed it. Taking place at Mizzou really was cool for me personally. Cant say I raved over it like most, but very glad I read it. Dead Cat Tail Assassins - About a woman that turns into an assassin by giving up her life to become a dead assassin. She gets a job that forces her to violate the assassin's code and shit hits the fan. Light fantasy. My complaint is this left me wanting more. Pretty short book that left so much on the table. Felt a bit rushed. You Dreamed of Empires - Short novel about Cortes invading Tenochtitlan and meeting Montezuma for the first time. More fantasy than historical fiction. Fell flat for me. Originally in spanish, maybe stuff was lost in translation. Star wars - nerd shit . Another solid entry in the series. The Passage - Re-read of one of my faves. A question on twitter came up "what book adaptation would you like to see redone properly". My instant answer was The Passage because he show was barely an effort. Ever since then Ive had it stuck in my head so Im gonna work my way though the trilogy. Batman - Story takes place after the first Michael Keaton movie. It was just ok. Didnt to much for me. Not something Id normally read, but tried something different. Probably will squeeze in one more before the year is up. Pretty decent reading year for this guy

Proud to have survived all of the different Russian names and diminutives. 36. The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson - 9/10 An informative, narrative based non-fiction book on the Great Migration. I’ve known about the Great Migration in a general sense but never really thought critically about what leaving your home and establishing yourself in a quasi foreign land during those times actually entailed. Additionally, while Jim Crow is of course well known, I found it especially harrowing to read about the hardships experienced in the North: systematic discrimination, white flight, race riots, etc that shape society to this day. My only critique is that some elements seemed to repeat; I can remember multiple times reading ideas that I had read a hundred pages back. I have a flight on Sunday so we’ll see if I can knock out #37 before the clock strikes midnight on the 31st but otherwise I am happy with my output for 2024.

I was legitimately a bit sad at the end of this book, mostly that it was over. Spent some time googling last night on any possible follow ups to what happens after. Will reread these three books in the future. Wife got me The Fall of Numenor as a Christmas gift, I'll tackle that next year sometime I'm sure. Next up: Beautyland by Marie Helene Bertino, trying to get one more to hit 60 for the year. Multiple people, podcasts, etc. had this one on their best of 2024 lists, the description was right up my alley.
Truman have you read any of the Necroscope series by Brian Lumley? Seeing that you’re a big fan of The Passage, these may be of interest to you. I’m currently on book #2 and fully engrossed.
