saw this at my liquor store for $169.99. Is this a good price and is this one of those you buy no matter what?

That should be like $40. $169 is robbery.

OWA is a bottle I pay $30 for. So in my opinion I would tell that store owner to go and get fucked.

I've been extremely fortunate this season with some finds I have made. The other night I was out watching a game with a buddy and this other group near us on the bar were jabbering with us about the game etc. after the game was over, they turned around and were making small talk. Said a joke about how they were in this part of town selling liquor to a liquor store.... we asked... sure enough, these fuckers were selling BTAC, pappy, stagg, ETL, etc. all at ridiculous prices. $500 for WLW, $600 for GTS, etc etc, they got to bragging bout how they had stalked the buffalo trace truck all throughout town etc. and had purchased in quantity. I told them that they were the fucking problem with this market and said fuck off as they left. Fucking douchebags.

They've had to switch to more discrete delivery vehicles here because of that. Shit's ridiculous. Some drivers have even been stalked/threatened over bottles.

I used to not like the way stores place bottle limits or reserve the special stuff for their dedicated customers, but honestly, after seeing the ridiculous shit people do for this stuff and hiking up secondary prices.... I will only do business with my local. I'm a loyal customer and they made sure took care of my ass. Pappy 15 for $120, ORVW 10 for $60.... fuck the secondary bitches

Love that bottle. Worth double retail, maybe 50-60 just because it is hard to find. Black market price of w12 is around 100.

I can sell it for $110, and didn’t need the bottles you offered. Not being a dick just going to flip it for what it’s worth, trying to trade/sell up for a lot B eventually

I’m sorry, if you want to offer a better trade I’m all ears but I have no interest in the bottles you offered. You requested I sell it to you for retail and you’d pay for shipping, that literally means I do the work finding the bottle and ship it to you for nothing, no thanks.

I’m certainly open to trading it for something comparable, same for my bottle of MWND.

Offering retail cash is secondary. Kindly fuck yourself. I'm fine with the bottles not matching your need and leaving it at that.

Secondary on that bottle is $110, I can show you multiple examples of it selling for that, i don’t think anyone is selling you a bottle of ETL for $40 unless you’re operating a charity. Cool if you don’t want to pay it, counter offer, or offer a better trade, but you can kindly go fuck yourself for being an asshole about it.

Pretty shitty of you to do after (if I’m remembering this correctly) you were begging people to give you good bottles at cost to commemorate your father. You can’t have it both ways.

Never begged to pay at cost and paid secondary for a couple of bottles which a couple of guys here will attest to.

Don’t play dumb. You’re part of the problem.

I asked for trade, his trades weren’t anything I wanted, so I offered to sell at secondary price. Nothing to apologize for, my goal is to trade/sell up to a Lot B, which I also shared with him.

I get one bottle of good stuff here and there, I don’t have mass market abilities like a liquor store. Let’s get back to discussing bourbon instead of this bull shit which we don’t have to agree about.

Had a cool convo with a smallish store owner the other day, where I got a THH for $199.

She said a lot of customers bitch about her prices, but they don’t understand that to get allocated bottles, her distributor makes her buy loads of other shit that she can’t move. She pointed to a stack of what legitimately looked like 20 cases of some shit vodka that’ll take her years to clear, and said she had to buy that to get 3 THHs and 3 GTS. So selling at $100 above retail is basically the only way she can afford to even have them and she only breaks even in the short term. Her honesty was a nice surprise and I’ll be going back.

That contrasts of course with the stores in town that just pick random numbers because they know “Bourbon is rare.” Like the store selling the latest PHC for $499 or the one I found today with Stagg at $599 (well over secondary). Those guys can kiss my ass.

Anyone following this Mattingly saga on BSM and other bourbon groups online?

I caught a bit of it today but from what I gather he and his products are basically banned because mods think he was having shills bid up his product on the secondary markets to drive increased demand for it? Anyone got anything on this? I’ve never had any of his blends but they went for quite a bit on secondary sites.

  38. Baseballman86

I didn’t see the shill bidding stuff but did hear there are concerns that his blends aren’t what they claim to be. Adding flavorings, false age statements, blending in trash cans, etc. Not surprising I guess. His batches are so small I don’t think he’s necessarily clearing them through all the proper channels of a national release. He could be mixing Buffalo Trace with maple syrup and calling it a blend of 14yr bourbons and nobody would know any better, and they’d rave about the juice because he’s Mattingly.

Someone mentioned unsanitary conditions, but another said that wasn't true. I don't have any interest in that bourbon so I didn't follow too closely but it seems like something shady is going on

  41. Baseballman86

    Baseballman86 Well-Known Member

The flavoring is much more likely than the trash cans IMO. If he spends say $10K acquiring some barrels and when they are blended together they taste like shit, there isn’t much stopping him from doctoring the juice and then charging whatever he wants per bottle. Couple folks have said he’s always been a little sketch, but I’ve never met him so I can’t really say on that end

Demand exists for paying the inflated/secondary prices, and therefore offering bourbons for sale at the inflated secondary market price contributes to the larger problem of making certain bourbons hard to find because an incentive exists to hoard and sell at the higher prices. While no one is forcing anyone to buy it at that price, the fact that he is offering it here at the inflated price contributes to the overall scarcity problem. As such, dude can get fucked.
