Starting the re-read (listen) this morning! Been years so I’m riding that edge of nostalgia and failing memory. Low level euphoria.
I love Warbreaker. Took me a minute to get into it after Way of Kings and Mistborn but it pays off, and I really loved it upon reread. Not a spoiler but a reminder of something that happened in Mistborn Spoiler Kelsier meets with an informant named Hoid in The Final Empire, Vin goes to meet with the same informant in Hero of Ages but gets a bad feeling and decides not to
!!!! I just read that chapter Spoiler This is probably ruining my reading experience because Im constantly looking for Easter Eggs that I dont know exist from The Cosmere. It really has me pointing the fingers at everyone. But for a brief moment I was thinking LightSong is from somewhere else in the cosemere w how he spoke about is past. THen realized it's probably just Idris. Then Hoid comes in as the storyteller and now my finger is pointed at him. However I dont remember him from Mistborn lol. I remember the informant but not the name. I'll give myself half credit but not really
Warbreaker is more filled with characters that pop up in his other works than visaversa, Hoid notwithstanding. not a spoiler - just some advice for spotting worldhoppers Spoiler Each planet has their own "theme" if you will. Obviously colors are very important in Warbreaker so many of their curses/idioms are color related. Same on every plant. Most of the time Sanderson has a worldhopper they go by a different name when they are off their home world, but they will slip up and use curses that don't necessarily make sense in the world they're on, and sometimes confuse the main characters This is somewhat of a Hoid spoiler-ish not really a plot spoiler Spoiler he is in every Cosmere novel
Warbreaker ch 45 Spoiler I can get past Susebron and Siri banging because its heat of the moment and shit happens. I cant get past him being 50 and her a teenager. Brando Sando Mormon is showing
Does anyone know if the next stormlight book out next month wraps up the series or at least part of it? I want to begin but I’m against beginning a series that isn’t finished as a matter of principle
It ends the first half. It's book 5 out of 10 and has a ending that I'm sure will set up the 2nd half. He will be taking a long break after this one.
If I recall though, the second half of the series will have different characters and take place further in the future.
It will be in the future (I think he said 10-15 years). He's already said these are the flashback characters: Spoiler Lift, Renarin, Taln, Shalash and Jasnah. Note, this doesn't mean they're alive.
If there is one author in the world you can have faith will deliver endings to series, it’s Brandon Sanderson.
Yeah but his schedule for part 2 is like ten years away. Lot of cool books between them but stormlight part 2 is like 20 years before it will be done. But yes he has wrapped up the first part so think that would check his box off
There is no way he waits 10 years for part two. He won’t be able to help himself. Knowing him it’s been a long con. I definitely think he needs a break but I can’t imagine him actually waiting that long. 4 years max before he announces he’s working on book 6
About halfway through words of radiance. It’s a much faster paced book than way of kings. Also I really disliked shallan and the shallan chapters in way of kings but now I think her stuff is better than Kaladin.
Shallan calling kaladin out for being a miserable fucker all the time was great and her calling him bridge boy cracks me up
I’m working my way through a reread of Way of Kings right now. Every time I think “this has to be wrapping up soon…right?” Nope. Not even close. I had forgotten just how much has happened already in these first 4 books.
In hindsight, probably the way to do it. Still, I just got to the end of WoK and the climactic battle and it felt worth the time investment.
I feel bad Sanderson is highly regarded I enjoy his writing style, but coming off of the Red Rising series, his book feels like a slog to me. I'm 3/4 of the way through the Final Empire. I get exposition and world building - it seems to be his strong suit - but it's a bit slow for me. Continue? Does it pick up? Edit: I'm enjoying it, but it's not the high I was hoping for after RR
This. I read the red rising series and the first book was fun/unique. After that the series frequently felt rushed with characters doing obviously stupid things to advance the plot. Eventually gave up on the series. I guess we all have our preferred styles and the well built build up is what draws me to this genre.
Assuming we’re still spoiling Wind and Truth? Spoiler just finished first listen today. Adolin and the army of recovering lost deadeyes had me whooping around the house! Didn’t really enjoy kalidan off playing therapist for the entire book, especially with an end of arc book. At the same time I was proud of him for that growth just not entertained. I feel like I need to give a day or two and then Start the relisten.
I agree. I’m doing a full reread of the books and I’m just starting Book 3. Read the first two along with Edgedancer.
There’s a guy that works for me that’s a big Sanderson nerd as well, and us talking about it has prompted like 5 other people to pick up Mistborn.
Im 2/3rds into Elantris. Im not loving it. Can definitely tell it's a first novel. Hasnt grabbed me the way Mistborn 1.0 or Warbreaker did
Didn't care for it either. But I also didn't care for Warbreaker. Love all the Mistborn books and The Emperor's Soul.
I go back and forth on if I think Sanderson’s conscious or otherwise angst about his Mormonism is good for his writing or not. Elantris being a good example
I know hes Mormon but thats it. I keep wondering about it. On one hand he has a propensity of framing mid twenties Women as old and washed up. On the other theres a lot on how BS religion is. Along w critics of mert based systems and capitalism / mercantilism. I like the themes explored in the book. But the plot kind of drags.
Elantris gets a lot better towards the end. I read a lot of Sanderson last year and it was the weakest one. Although, Wind and Truth might be in contention now. *Ducks*
Finished today. Just felt a little off. Gonna read the emperors soul and the other novella I cant think of the name of. Then eventually come back to the 2nd mistborn series and then stormlight
