Its going to take a while to edit and revise a 450k word book, not to mention finalize the illustrations, additional maps needed etc...
I know. I'm just impatient. Sanderson's light speed writing is obviously still too slow for me. I'm joking, but I'm really excited about Oathbringer. I think SA is my favorite book series currently going followed by maybe Kingkiller Chronicles and then maybe ASOIAF (lol, "still going").
Has anyone read Arcanum Unbounded yet? Once I finish my current book I'll probably start it. Or at least read the Stormlight novella. I think I've read most of what's in there.
It's sitting on my nightstand and I just haven't had a chance to pick it up yet. Hope to get through it soon.
I finished Arcanum Unbounded yesterday. Well, I guess I should say I finished the four stories I hadn't read yet in Arcanum Unbounded. Those were: 1. The Eleventh Metal 2. Allomancer Jak and the Pits of Eltania, Episodes 28 through 30 3. White Sand 4. Edgedancer Originally I had looked forward to Edgedancer the most. Come to find out it's a novella about Lift. She's not a character I remembered a whole bunch about from Words of Radiance, so I was a little surprised. I won't get into any spoilers, but it was decent. I didn't think it was excellent though. There are better pieces in the collection (for those who haven't read them, I think The Emperor's Soul and Mistborn: Secret History are both better). Oddly enough, I enjoyed White Sand (the excerpt from the novel, not the graphic novel) the most of the four.
Snapshot is out! Hey, all! I’ve been deep into revisions on Oathbringer. Turns out, big books don’t just take a long time to write—they take a long time to revise. (Who knew?) Last year during my trip to the United Arab Emirates, I took a break from working on Oathbringer to write a novella, as is my habit to refresh myself now and then. Other than Edgedancer (the Stormlight novella in Arcanum Unbounded), this is the only thing I had time to write last year that wasn’t Oathbringer. Snapshot is one of those stories that, once I had the idea, wouldn’t leave me alone. I wrote it furiously, having only about a week’s time to finish it, and I’m very pleased with the product: a kind of cyberpunk–detective thriller mashup. As we’ve posted earlier, Hollywood quickly snatched this one up, and it’s currently under option to MGM. I think you’ll like it! The print edition is only available in a special edition leatherbound from Vault Books that will be released soon (though we will also a cheap hardcover toward the end of the year). But as is our tradition, we’re simultaneously releasing an ebook for a few bucks, DRM-free, in all markets. So you can choose whether you want the expensive collector’s edition, or the quick ebook. (Audible has also released the audiobook today.) Please give the story a look on its explanation page, where you’ll find a synopsis and links to the first two chapters. Also, note that if you buy the print edition in any format, we’ll happily send you the ebook for free at your request. (This will be handled via a coupon for my store.)
Started the way of kings the other day. Scared to keep reading and get invested when i know the serious is still a decade away from finishing. Maybe i should have started another series?
Stormlight Archive was my first foray into Sanderson and I just finished book 2, amazing and I'm hooked... did not realize book 3 isn't out yet though just went to buy and got so upset waiting for that and kingskiller now : (
Luckily for you, he should have Oathbringer out later this year. And he has other series. If you want to continue reading his stuff, Mistborn should be your next choice.
Just finished WoR, what an awesome story. These are my first Sanderson reads and he does an amazing job of making nearly every single character interesting.
From Chris Kluwe, FWIW: Just finished my full beta readthrough of @BrandSanderson's OATHBRINGER. Boy are you all in for a treat when this comes out. It is *good.*
Any fantasy series you would rec from any author ahead of Mistborn? Just finished Kingkiller Chronicles as well and have read ASOIAF.
Let me beat RegimentML to it and say Malazan Book of the Fallen. My favorite fantasy series of all time
This was the other series I was looking into, but saw it had lower ratings than Mistborn on a few sites so I wanted to see what the TMB consensus was.
Currently reading Malazan series but as of now I prefer Mistborn more. Summary: Malazan crazy depth of characters &universe & history, politics and intrigue, magic system unique, series a very difficult read and tough to get into. Mistborn very reader friendly, much easier read, unique but a little gimmicky magic system, much more action and much less scheming/politics/backstory, much shallower from a history and universe setting by comparison.
I'm a Scott Lynch fanboy but his series isn't finished yet. Plus there seems to be some disagreement on how much people actually like his books outside of book 1. But I love them. Malazan is great but is very hit or miss for people. Plus it's super long. Red Rising and Mistborn are both fun and easier reads. First Law is also good.
I had read so much about how hard Malazan was to get into, I thought it was going to be written in Latin. Didn't take me long at all to get into it. Mistborn is much easier to get into, no doubt, and is great. I love Mistborn Red Rising is science fiction, it's a fun fast read but isn't on the same level as Sanderson or Erikson.
Can't fucking wait. Release date is November? I'll reread the first two starting in September I guess.
About to finish Calamity. Only Sanderson stuff I've read. It's good, but not great. What should I read next?
Mistborn if you want a finished series. Stormlight if you don't care that it's ongoing and you want his best
I agree with you that his Reckoner's series is good not great, but I think a lot of that is because it is a YA series. Like RegimentML said, his Stormlight Archive and Mistborn series are World class
Sanderson pumps out like three books a year so he doesn't have Martin's problems. That said, Stormlight are 1400 page behemoths and take time to write. He probably won't finish those things for another decade or more.
I believe calamity is my least favorite Sanderson book I've read, so start anywhere else. Also Emperor's Soul is my favorite piece of Sanderson writing to date. Storm light books are 2 and 3.
Don't worry about finishing series with Sanderson. He is a machine and regularly pumps out his own books, and if you're worried about his ability to finish a 10+ book epic, he finished the mess that Robert Jordan left of the Wheel of Time series and wrapped in up in 3 more excellent books.
I just finished my first Sanderson book, Steelheart. I really liked it. I already plowed through his short story mitosis and I'm starting the next one. Great series. I look forward to reading more of his series.
Steelheart and that series is fun, but it's YA. Wait until you get into his adult fantasy stuff like Mistborn and Stormlight Archive, it's incredible
Which series should i read first? I just finished the Reckoners and want to hit another Sanderson series.
If you don't mind waiting for new books to come out and for the series to be finished, read Stormlight. If you want a completed series, read Mistborn.
I read Reckoners first as well, and now I'm doing the Mistborn series. It starts out a little dry, but it's SO much better than The Reckoners. Hard to believe it's the same author tbh.
Stormlight is his magnum opus, but he's only 2 out of 10 books finished (3rd comes out in July). Mistborn is finished-ish. It had a completed trilogy, then a 3 books of a quartet that takes place in the same universe through the next series. Highly recommend both.
