Kinda interesting. Reading a bit about Brexit. The premise to get away from a shadowy bureaucracy that has lined the pockets of billionaires and trampled workers rights was mostly sold to people by using racism and misinformation.
There are a LOT crusty old people who would rather burn everything down than have to go to a non-white doctor
One of UKIP's lead candidates for the European election said it is acceptable to rape "young boys" in one of his YouTube videos. Police are investigating Carl Benjamin, better-known as YouTuber Sargon of Akkad, over the remarks. In the video, from 2014, Benjamin said: "I can be quoted as saying you can fuck young boys. It’s actually not as controversial as you think. "Depends on the child, doesn’t it? The ancient Greeks were pederasts. It was considered to be normal. It was mentoring." Benjamin has previously said he "wouldn't even rape" Labour MP Jess Phillips and caused further outrage last week by stating he finds "racist jokes funny" after a video of him using racist language was uncovered. It has since been deleted. A UKIP whistleblower passed a record of Benjamin's comments to his local police force in Wiltshire, The Mail on Sunday reports. The document also includes screenshotted messages showing Benjamin asking for "something to really trigger" offence: "Do you have any underage porn or child porn? I will delete it fast so nobody gets in trouble."
Back to back PM’s who will go down amongst the worst of all time. Lord North still is the worst ever and probably will forever remain there. He was the one who held the power that denied the US Colonies representation in parliament. Poor George III was sort of powerless to step in had he desired. After the first couple of sentences, the Declaration of Independence is somewhat embarrassing because they didn’t know what the power dynamics in the British Government were.
It’s all ranting against George. His hands were tied. In the previous 120 years, England had decapitated and forced another king to abdicate and flee. He was only the first King in the Hanoverian line to speak English with an English accent. Both of his predecessors had to deal with Jacobite uprisings. The ranting should have been aimed towards the unelected House of Lords who inherited their positions from their family.
Clownshoes Johnson at the Palace about to be PM. His rumoured Cabinet is probably the funniest and scariest thing I've ever seen in a Western Democracy.
Honestly it is impossible to know. If there is a Hard Brexit there will be a meltdown of the UK economy. I cannot see him surviving as finally the utter lies of Brexiteers (which have already been shown up time and time again) come home to roost. It looks like he is going the way of hardliners into cabinet and maybe actually forcing an election himself as sensible Tories vote their own party out. He must look at the electoral math and think he can get close to 40% with Tory + Brexit Party votes (those votes will go Tory if they go hard Brexit) - though I think there is a few % Tory that will go away if they go hardline (after all, 1/3 of the core membership did not vote for Johnson). Labour are such a mess that the Liberal Democrats are owning the centre. The UK's First Past the Post system is incredibly messy once you get beyond two credible parties of Government and is very difficult to predict. It is a huge roll of the dice for him but I think it is the only way he can stay in power for longer than a few months is an election soon - probably a week or so out from Hard Brexit.
Great quote that John Oliver found on new UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson "Working with Boris Johnson is like walking a few feet behind a horse shoveling its shit"
yeah, love having "different color filter Trump" having to simmer in his own excriments. Actually tweeted at that fucker out of pure rage a while back, never tweet at people in anger normally
Trump actually believes a lot of his own BS, problematic as that is. Johnson doesn’t actually. He’s been a self serving liar his whole career. His whole persona is a creation. Supporting Brexit was a tactical decision to win the leadership when he didn’t have much of an issue with the EU. He was fired previously for lying. He can’t answer how many children he has. He lied and bluffed his way through being Foreign Secretary and lied and bluffed his way through what he said he would do with the EU. All to get power. Now he has it, he is falling apart.
You could replace Johnson for Trump in this and it's all still true. It's scary the way the two men mirror each other.
I'm not sure Trump believes it either honestly. No doubt he's a natural authoritarian and protectionist, but beyond that I'm not sure what exactly it is he believes. Agree completely on Johnson though. Even his fabricated stage name was designed for a political purpose. He is 100% self-absorbed and ruthlessly power-hungry. Forget Trump, the better British parallel for him is another blonde egomaniac--Heseltine.
Trump ran for president as a marketing stunt and ended up getting elected. He'll say whatever he needs to to get elected again.
Heseltine though had principles that he didn’t deviate from. Similarly Ken Clarke. Both wanted to be PM but made moves that damaged them.
Clarke very principled--sacrificed being leader of his party because of his EU federalism beliefs. I'm not as sold on Heseltine. No doubt he has principles, but the most important things is always himself.
Not really. He walked out on Thatcher’s government and became enemy number 1 to all Thatcherites. And it was not over a significant issue. It was personality and principles based and was not a strategically smart decision. In contrast, Boris agreed with May’s approach to the Backstop in December 2017. Then renaged. He agreed to her Chequers proposals, then resigned a couple of days later after David Davis did as he didn’t want to be outflanked as a Brexit extremist. He voted against the Withdrawal Treaty twice. Along with Reed-Mogg he claimed to stand shoulder to shoulder with the DUP, then he voted for it third time when he thought she had the votes and he could sail to power. He has no principles whatsoever. Heseltine had a giant ego no question, but he was no Boris Johnson. Johnson doesn’t have personality clashes (aside from shouting at his latest girlfriend) that cause him to resign, he either lies or sees an opportunity for better positioning himself when dealing with other politicians.
