I have come around on the hire and am now cautiously optimistic. I really, really wish he would have jumped on Brady...but Carolina and Rhule got the jump there.
Would be nice to lock up this GM spot this weekend and start filling out the staff. So far we've lost LB coach to Carolina, monken to UGA, and Henry to Dallas. Am I missing anyone?
Rumors are that DePodesta wants Berry and Stefanski wants Paton. Going to be interesting to see how this first move with Stefanski at the HC goes. Will most likely tell us a lot about the power structure.
My guess it's more of a familiarity thing than anything. Stefanski has worked with Paton for 13 years. He's considered a rising star in the NFL. Podesta worked with Berry in Cleveland and he too is considered a rising star in the NFL. I prefer Paton just because we saw the draft picks a Sashi/DePodesta/Berry regime produced (trade downs, traded #2 and the chance at Wentz for Cory Coleman, etc...); and Paton is known to be a very good evaluator of talent. Maybe, Berry isn't to attribute for that regime's failed drafts and Sashi/Depodesta were more at fault. Maybe his time in Philly and him being in charge and in harmony with Stefanski will produce better results. I probably just have PTSD at this point. But I just prefer new blood and new evaluators who have a proven track record of success...and that won't be DePodesta's back pocket.
I understand what you are saying and for the most part I agree with you about the new blood, but it is a joke that the main buzzword coming from this organization since the Stefanski hiring has been "alignment" and on their first major decision the HC and Depodesta are disagreeing publicly.
Apparently they interviewed Rich Scangarello. He was widely disliked and viewed as a bad coordinator here in Denver
1 (10). Tristan Wirfs, OT, Iowa 2 (41). Terrell Lewis, EDGE, Alaba 3 (74). Antoine Winfield Jr., S, Minnesota 3 (90). Matt Peart, OT, UConn 4 (105). Adam Trautman, TE, Dayton 6 (168). Chase Claypool, WR, Notre Dame 7 (222). Garrett Marino, DT, UAB
My guess is Claypool will go round 3, but that would be lower than the ND board consensus. If he tests great, I can definitely see second round or maybe even late first if a team really falls in love with him. Not a chance he lasts that late.
I’ve seen a day 3 projection on several draft sites. This WR class is insane, I don’t think it’s out of the question that some really good WR’s go later than people expect.
Still offer him a 2nd round tender. If another team wants him, then great. Otherwise we get him back for $3-4 million.
On Paton Spoiler VIP Back To Topics Posted on 18 mins, V I P, User Since 45 months ago, User Post Count: 0 18 minsVIP 45 months Was told that the Browns did not scare off Paton in as much as Paton was much more comfortable with the Vikings organization. The Browns presented a 'working plan' in which the GM made personnel decisions BUT....... there was discussion that did place the 'process group' as a working in tandem, functioning unit with the player personnel area. When I asked exactly what that meant, was told, "the expectation, the belief is this area would work with the potential GM on all things related to procurement."
RE: Woods Spoiler Posted on 3 hrs, V I P, User Since 178 months ago, User Post Count: 0 3 hrsVIP 178 months I was told that San Francisco 49ers defensive backs/passing game coordinator Joe Woods already has a defensive backs coach lined up to join him in Cleveland so that indicates he is taking the defensive coordinator job. Nothing will happen officially until after the Super Bowl. Kevin Stefanski has been respectful of San Francisco's Super Bowl timeline and obligations, which suggests he has not given up hope on luring Mike McDaniel or Mike LaFleur away for the offensive coordinator role.
What is the joke this time around? A GM candidate who has been in the same organization for 13 seasons and rarely, if ever, takes interviews elsewhere decided he wanted to stay in his current situation? Two weeks ago 99% of Browns fans didn't even know this guy existed...now the organization is a joke because he decided to stay where he is comfortable? Geeze....some of our fans should be relegated to the XFL.
First off, I am completely fine being relegated to the XFL. I'd love to not root for this team. The joke is the fact that we fail to bring in a guy that we publicly went after for a job that is an upgrade to the one he currently has. He clearly wants to be a GM or he would not have taken the interview. He turned it down because we have some plan for a convoluted decision making process. I'm not 99% of people because I was aware of him. He didn't turn the job down because he loves Minnesota.

But I get it...losing for 20 years has made a lot of fans overly pessimistic and certainly have glass half empty vision. Paton isn't the only candidate capable of helping this franchise.
That is called spin. Do you really believe that the guy just likes his lesser job in Minnesota? He just interviewed for the fun of it? He wants to be a GM..just not here
Also, never said he was the only capable GM out there, and that was never my issue...my issue is the public whiffs on high profile jobs.
He's turned down many GM interviews for other teams. His relationship with Stefanski is why he accepted the Browns interview in the first place. He's been in Minnesota for 13 years and doesn't want to leave. The guy wants to be a GM in Minnesota. Spin it away as another whiff in Cleveland despite them getting their #1 HC want and the staff he is putting together so far being extremely impressive. Stefanski really liked Paton and Berry. Berry has been the #1 want by the organization for GM this entire time.
