I don't run a lot because of gladiator-style injuries and being a D-III athlete, but 1-2x/month I make sure I can still run an eight minute mile without dying. It's my way of making sure I'm still in shape. My cardio-checkup. Rocked 7:13 yesterday, fast as the wind. My buddies say they strive for a ten-minute mile. Everything I read says that's the new standard. It's bullshit. How many out of shape incels on this board not named Name P. Redacted would be unable to achieve this very mediocre feat?
Yes. While out of shape I'm still skinny enough to conjure up less than 2 minutes per lap, long way away from my high school cross country days and 16:40ish 5k pr.
I always worry that I don't do enough cardio because I rarely run, but I hike very often with big packs. What is the difference in running 3-4-5 miles non-stop vs hiking 10-15 miles with big vert at a moderate pace? Is it the same?
Have concept2 rower and bike I use nearly every day, mid 50s resting heart rate and currently a drunk bastard
This thread was prompted by a colleague offering to give me a free subscription to WHOOP for a fitness band. I don't like all the newfangled fitness tracking about sleep time, etc. Eat well, move, sweat. Do yoga. Follow me for exclusive #tips
Did 7:25 a couple days ago, which is pretty slow. Hoping to get back down to 6:00 before the end of the summer.
Rucking or backpacking is one of the best things you can do cardio wise from the research coming out. Very low impact, easy to get into Zone 2 and stay there + 3 & 4, and can do for long periods of time.
High school cc postseason (Thanksgiving weekend) we always drove up to a race in Charlotte at Mcalpine Park, hill literally in the middle of the race was brutal. Our "hill training" consisted of running up disused bridges that had been turned into pedestrian walkways, fuck hills.
Usually my first 1-2 miles of a 4-5 mile run is in the 8:30 pace range. A few years back got in good enough shape to do that over 10 miles of a half then hated myself over the last 3. Now I feel old and my joints are bad but could still probably run sub 7 over a mile for sure
Since Christmas been regularly doing treadmill with an 8 degree incline and a 40 lb weight vest over 3ish miles at anywhere from 3-4 mph because of the lower impact and it fucks you up in a great way
Years of being a hippie and hiking with backpacks and tents and aligning my chakras had allowed me cardiovascular superiority
amen. A while back I saw some big time Univ of Washington guy talk about how when he runs he wears a $15 Timex so he knows the time and can use a stop watch feature. Listen to what your body is telling you and respond accordingly. 99.9% of people don't need all this data. Good time to listen to Content Nausea by Parquet Courts if you've got 12 mins or so, watch this video.....a) Mike Smith is cool as shit and I could listen to him talk about running all night and b) Nico Young is an absolute bad ass. In the video Smith talks some about intervals and I think that ultimately gets to the real benefits of serious distance running with the heart rate/VO2 Max stuff
A lot of the blue zone areas are influenced by constant light physical activities. Walking, gardening, golfing vs the American way of sitting for 8-10 hours and then maybe a 30min workout if you're "active"
Work in office twice a week on the 3rd floor of our building, walk up the steps every time no elevator. Not all heroes wear capes.
I don't think it needs to be quantified. The same shit that keeps you healthy always will. Eat plant based and make sure your meat is good. Move. Sweat. Stress your heart. You do all of this and you'll be mostly fine. And sleep. It really is wonderful. We (should) spend 1/3 of our life sleeping. Make it count.
I will take it!!!!!! Off topic but seeing people in office eat snacks for literally 8 hours a day makes one very cynical when the same people claim they can't lose weight.
Is there any negative to staying at 3/4 for longer thah the recommended time? I def stay in 3 for hours-per-day in the backcountry
