I agree with this, with the exception of the Armada that is assembled 100% in Japan at the Yukuhashi plant. And the new one looks great but will still depreciate like 70% in 60 months.

My daughter is 15. I bought a used Hyundai Tucson that I'm driving until she turns 16 (bc of previously mentioned shitty Infiniti transmission I have no car)

I love it so far. I was going to get a mid size Lexus/Subaru/BMW suv for myself but now considering Hyundai.

The GX isn’t nearly as big as the boxy shape makes it appear. Much easier to park and drive around town than a truck sized suv

Having a third kid in Nov and have got to upgrade my wife’s Ford Edge to something with a third row. She wants to look at the Carnival, Telluride, and Palisade this Friday.

Looking at the last few pages and may try to check out the Sienna and Atlas as well. Any other mini vans or suvs we should be checking out? She is less open to a mini van but with three in car seats, it probably makes the most sense.

Sienna has a lot of cool features in their top model. I’d love a built in vacuum in my car. Would be great with kids. Trying to talk a coworker into getting one of those over the Honda

With three kids the move should be to a minivan for sure. We went with the Odyssey over the Sienna. The drive felt a lot better in the Honda vs the Sienna. Probably because all Sienna’s are hybrid. Also there’s certain features that the Odyssey offered that the Sienna didn’t have like the Magicslide seats and the Cabinwatch and Cabintalk are super useful with kids.

I used to work with Nissan corporate for a few years managing their real estate/construction. When we were dealing with the training centers (where dealer mechanics get trained), and the head of training for North America said straight up don't buy anything produced in the Canton plant. Was shocking to hear from someone so high up in the company.

You need a minivan with 3 kids. 3-row mid-size SUVs are impractical for storage, and full size SUVs are overpriced gas guzzlers.

Compare an Odyssey and Sienna and go with the one that fits your wants/needs best.

    Question:

I bought a new car (Toyota Land Cruiser) after driving around a 15 year old Land Rover LR2 that has ~ 100k miles on it. A lot of my driving is just to and from train station (a few miles) and local errands. I have not sold the Land Rover yet, it drives great but not too long ago felt like it was on its last leg. I'm tempted to keep the car to just eat those miles used to the train station and some errands. The only cost involved would be insurance and the inconvenience of having an extra car in the driveway.

Is there a way/formula/rule of thumb of the cost of miles on the new car? If it was more than insurance I could justify keeping the old car until there is any problem with it. This also depends on whether I can get any resale value off of the Land Rover, and if that is $4k or $7k that would make a difference too.

I'm guessing if I follow basically a lease agreement table I would get what I'm looking for but interest rates might skew that.

During the pregnancy for our third kid, my wife traded in her Lexus NX for a Toyota Highlander and I traded in my ford edge for a Toyota Sienna. She realized within the first month how not-practical the third row SUV is.

The minivan is absolutely what you need. The doors are lower to the ground, doors slide open with a key press and don’t swing out, there is a ton of space, it’s tailored for a family with kids. Driving a minivan means you’re self confident and know what the best family vehicle is.

The fridge and vacuum just seem like some bullshit that will break to me, but who knows.

Our previous van had a vacuum. We used it once in 5 years. Decided we didn’t need it in the Sienna we have now.

Dammit guys, just get a $30-$40 shop vac. It can vacuum the car and other things.

We ended up getting a Kia Carnival and love it so far. As soon as we started looking at vans, she knew that was the move. Kids are obsessed with it too.

With the 3 kids, does your SUV have a captains middle row or a bench? The bench and going 3 across in the SUV doesn’t seem too bad? I agree that having 2 kids in the captains seats in middle, and third kid in the back row seems like a hassle - especially if primary kid vehicle

The highlander is captain second row, bench third. The rear seats just don’t have much room, and you’re also sacrificing trunk space. You basically have to get a full size suv to compare to the interior space.

don’t get me wrong, it’ll work and I see plenty of people do it. But you’re paying roughly the same amount (for new) for an inferior family vehicle to the minivan.

It's not bad at all to have it set up three rows like that (we have four kids). Unless you get a true bench (which you can really only get now on bottom trims), they try to make the middle row captains' chairs with a thing in the middle. It's not the most comfortable.

Similar to my situation though I went to a 4Runner and my Land Rover was next to dead. I miss the Rover as it drove much better, especially on longer trips. But the reliability of the 4Runner is reassuring.

Why not post your Rover for sale at the high end or slightly above whatever you value it and see if anyone bites? In the meantime you can use it for hauling, towing, offroading, etc to protect the Land Cruiser.
