Sounds good to me. I would have been fine if we hired Trooper Taylor to recruit and wave that towel on the sidelines.
Steele allegedly gave himself a concussion hitting his head on the wall before the game. Was so out of it, he was calling plays from his Carolina Panthers days.
Morris was the guy who started Cajun Ryan Mallet (Cole Kelley) who threw 5 picks against UNT. He followed that up by trotting out Starkel against San Diego St and watching him throw five pics. Great hire.
Chad was a great OC at Clemson running Gus’ offense. He saved Dabo’s ass in year 3. Granted, he walked into an offense full of star players, but they blossomed under his coaching. He also set the dynasty up by recruiting DW4. Arkansas was obv a debacle, but not sure why this would be considered a bad move.
Kevin steele having a mental breakdown during the orange bowl is the best thing to ever happen to clemson
It’s a great hire. He’s not gonna call plays. He’s gonna recruit, work with the qb’s, and basically dissect defenses. The very worst possible scenario is that he’s unhappy not calling plays and becomes toxic in the locker room. I doubt he does that unless he wants to ruin any career he hopes to have moving forward.
Looking forward to Clemson posters telling ah hen how good chad is when nix has his first 5 pick game against an fcs school
You guys still stanning for Chad is weird. He had a good tenure I guess with you guys but got a lot better when he left. Chad fucking sucks. I tried to like the guy and defended his early issues until it was just indefensible, but he can’t run a program to save his life. There’s no flow to anything he does. His practices are chaotic and we’ve all seen the Gameday experience. He can recruit, I’ll give him that
It's almost like he can be a good OC and an awful HC. Clemson didnt have the talent then they do now. Boyd isn't DW or Trevor. Pretty sure they were one of 2-3 schools between 2011-2013 that had a 3k passer, 1k rusher, and 1k receiver during that time. Claiming he wasn't that good at Clemson is retarded
You gave the guy 18 games to turn around a program who was ran into the ground by the previous staff, while running a system that was nothing like his. I am not saying he is some great coach by any means, but how can you say he isnt a good head coach? Especially hiring a bagman who cant develop uber talent as his replacement. It is obvious after your search you dont truly care about the future of your football program.
I clearly outlined both things you posted about here. You're "I guess" is clearly a dismissal and wrong. He sucked dick at your shitty. Doesn't mean he's not a good OC and has been a good OC
I was honestly surprised he was so bad at Arkansas. I figured he’d at least put up points while he rebuilt the roster. Reading up on his tenure it sounds like he treated his inherited players like crap. No excuse for that. He was the one that took the job knowing they were there. They didn’t sign up to play for him. That whole deal soured me on him a lot, and somewhat obviously I think it’s why he wasn’t successful there. If he learns from that I think he could still be a good head coach elsewhere. Orgeron, Kiffin and loads of other coaches sucked at their first major HC gig and then with the chance to dissect why and grow up a little, they improved from the experience.
Getting shithoused at home against SJSU and blown out by WKU by a QB you processed the year before is unacceptable. Period. He was losing his own recruits to the portal and had already alienated the upper classmen by blaming them for not having any leadership and having to play so many freshman. again, good coordinator... awful head coach. There was significant regression under him. 20 games is plenty to show some kind of improvement. His refusal to take over playcalling from Craddock and for some reason keeping Chavis around was his own damn fault.
We got even better because he put our offense on the map after the Billy Napier garbage which made it a lot easier to recruit skill talent. He got us deshaun watson. He did a great job.
I agree how he treated the current players was wrong and a flaw. I think the Cheif hire was just to have a name and knew his offense was way behind what it needed to be and was going to lean on the defense for a few years till he got talent in. It is clear that was a mistake, but again 18 games. Chad's biggest issue is he was always looking for the next stop without actually having someone to go with him.
Hold that thought....I'll post some nice details when I get a chance. He can't show his face in Dallas now for how he pissed off smu.
Prospector Part I of “The Chad Chronicles” Okay here we go… Part I will feature the first 12 months under Chad. ***Reminder this was all from SMU’s side of the table, there might be conflicting information based on stuff from Clemson side*** Chad signed a 6-year $12 million contract with SMU, he signed such a small annual salary because he wanted money to sign quality assistants. At the time, it was very Dabo-esque of Chad to do this, instead of getting the 4 year $3.5 million per year SMU initially offered. Chad said he was here for the long haul and took the longer contract with less money to show it. Rumors were flying around SMU that Chad would bring either Jeff Scott or Tony Elliot with him at the time to be the OC and Marion Hobby was the guy he wanted as DC. Hence the reason he wanted a heavy bag of $ to afford and OC/DC and get them to leave Clemson. After the first week, rumors were still swirling that Chad was bringing “Clemson people” with him to SMU, but soon after they heard Hobby would not leave Clemson. There was quiet optimism that Jeff Scott would be joining Chad. So, the initial staff (with Clemson ties) after the first week was: OC- Jeff Scott WR- Justin Stepp QB- Tyler Carlton OL- Dustin Fry Obviously, Jeff Scott ended up getting promoted to Co-OC with Tony Elliot leaving Chad to then end up bringing along Joe Craddock as the “OC/QB Coach” even though Chad would be calling the plays. The rest of the defensive guys he filled out where HS coaches or guys he had ties to while at Tulsa for 1 year. The staff wasn’t as expected after the first week, Van Malone ended up getting the nod at DC and was known as a good recruiter (turned out he wasn’t at SMU). The staff wasn’t what Chad had pitched to SMU and what he was planning on bringing to SMU, but he assured to boosters and the administration that he still had the guys that he wanted. Everyone just assumed since Clemson was on the rise after 4 straight 10+ win seasons that even the GA’s were going to be quality up and coming hires… Boy was that wrong, more on this later… ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ So once spring practice rolled around, they held a golf outing in late spring to get a lot of the boosters/alumni to meet Chad and the other coaches. The thing that was notable out of that whole ordeal, was that Chad said he had better talent during his time at Lake Travis HS in Austin then he does at SMU at this very moment. He won back to back state titles (36-0) with Garrett Gilbert at the helm. Side bar—June Jones left SMU's program in shambles… A few tidbits on how June Jones recruited/left the program. 1) June never evaluated prospects in person, if you wanted to meet June you had to come to SMU’s campus. 2) He was notorious for offering kids based on Senior film, would wait for them to send them highlights before he offered. 3) He would take 1-2 week vacations in the heart of January back to Hawaii with his wife instead of recruiting. 4) He would only have 1 OV weekend in January (the last weekend, because he was too busy) 5) He hired a guy to be the WR coach and actually threatened to fire him because he was making him and the rest of the staff look bad because he was “recruiting to much.” High schools would call and wonder why other High schools would get visited by this coach and they didn’t… true story. So, based on what you can infer… SMU’s roster was filled with a bunch of no offer kids from other schools. So, all the alumni were told to temper their expectations for the 2015 season. They ended up 2-10 that year but showed promise on offense (thanks to June Jones landing Courtland Sutton and James Proche) and the defense on the other hand was a work in progress. After that final game there was a quiet optimism within the football office and boosters within the inner circle with what Chad was doing regarding recruiting and what was coming back in 2016 with Matt Davis back at QB, 2 promising young RB’s and a highly underrated WR room. That was before the wife of a coach on staff opened their mouth and exposed “Operation Rent” … She was at dinner with a large group of friends/others and mentioned how it was unfortunate that they were renting a house compared to buying a house. She wanted to redecorate and buy the house they were currently living in, but when questioned why they didn’t buy the house she said “because my husband’s boss told him and his staff that they shouldn’t buy anything because we aren’t going to be here long..” One of the women sitting next to her turned out to be the wife of a prominent SMU booster…
you would expect the woman that overheard the coach’s wife told her husband he mentioned it the other boosters, but they all agreed that they hadn’t seen any sign of distress yet, and thought she might have just misspoke. They agreed that they would be more aware of their interaction with the staff going forward and start to pay closer attention to what the staff is telling them vs others. Going into the spring/summer there a recruit out of DFW who's uncle a big SMU graduate/fan was and brought him to SMU camps/games since he was in HS. If I remember correctly, he was a high 3 star or a low 4 star. Y'all remember this is SMU and not Clemson recruiting, this was a big fish for SMU. With that being said one day late in the summer the uncle ran into one of the boosters and the booster asked if he was coming to the cookout at the end of the summer with X recruit. (Side note- yes Chad copied Dabo on a lot of his recruiting tactics such as Elite Junior Day, End of Summer BBQ, etc.) They were planning on going, but the staff reached out to them and told them they shouldn't come. When asked why they said that, they said it would be a waste of time and resources for them to keep recruiting him... The prospect had at least a dozen P5 offers and SMU thought they weren't seriously in the conversation. That frustrated the booster and even the uncle because the kid wanted to stay close to the DFW area and even reiterated it to the staff. Yet SMU stopped recruiting him and he ended up signing with a nearby P5 program. That was eye opening once word got out to the boosters… So, Chad ends up going 5-7 in year 2 and like what SMU had seen in the spring there was a nice leap in talent/progress on the field from 2-10 the year before. They had beaten Tom Herman and #11 Houston and there also seemed to be an uptick in recruiting from the year before and beating out some P5 schools for a handful of recruits (more on this later). Toward the end of the year there was rumors that started swirling that Chad was a candidate for Baylor... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I’m going to take a short side bar to give y’all a recap on what I told y’all back a few years ago (I’ll attach the links to the thread at the bottom) when Chad was getting courted by Baylor after the Briles Rape Scandal. In 2016 when Chad started entertaining offers from Baylor and even Texas Tech.. Tech met with Chad’s representatives’ a few times before sticking with Kliff. Things got serious with Baylor after the whole Briles rape scandal and Baylor was looking for a coach to give a chunk of cash too, and to stick around for a while and weather the media shvt storm that was going to happen. I posted all the info a while back and below is what I said back in 2016. “I know there has been threads about him going to Baylor. Here's some info for y'all. Announcement tomorrow that he's heading to Baylor, with the press conference set for Monday afternoon in Waco.” “$24.5 Million for 5 years with a opt out clause if Texas A&M head coaching gig opens. Bringing the whole Offensive staff with him.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ During this 10-14 day window the SMU offensive coaches were telling the recruits they were gone, they were headed to Baylor. The contract/negotiations were close to being finalized and they essentially started recruiting their offensive commits to Baylor. The defensive staff was pretty much in the dark for this whole thing… They obviously were hearing the rumors, but Morris was essentially telling the coaching staff he wasn’t going anywhere and wasn’t going take the job. They continued to do their job like nothing was going on... Behind the scenes Chad and Co. were hand picking a few kids from the commitment list and telling them to get ready for the switch, they were moving on from SMU. That came to a screeching halt when Morris got greedy.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Chad overplayed his hand on demands according to a few sources. That turned BU officials off a bit and at the same time, Fedora expressed interest. Baylor could try for Fedora then fall back to Morris." Okay, so here's what happened with Morris. He realized he had Baylor by the balls and tried to squeeze out as much from Baylor as he could. They offered him a average salary of $4.9 Million a year with a opt out if the Texas A&M job opened and the opt out would be half of his remaining salary. Morris countered and said he wanted $5.5 Million annual salary with the opt out being nothing. This is when Baylor got a little irritated about being taken advantage of. After that they started interviewing other names (Fedora, Fleck, Montgomery, Dykes) They realized that Fedora wasn't going to happen, most people believe Purdue will get Fleck and Dykes is a long shot. They're hesitant to bring back Montgomery because he was the OC at Baylor 2 years ago and believe that people will still associate him with rape scandals. So, Baylor realized they weren't going to pay an arm and a leg and that's when they and Morris decided to part ways. The price was such a big deal that Morris never formally interviewed for the HC position at Baylor. Also, to keep it in perspective how bad it is at Baylor, they have 50 Scholarship players as of now for next year. 40 of those will be upperclassman and 10 will be underclassman.... So, in 2 years Baylor might be one of the worst college football teams in the country. So, you see why Morris wanted that much money to make it worthwhile and be well off if the Baylor job became a fiasco. Just thought I'd share. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ While Baylor was interviewing other Candidates, Morris and his agent were talking to SMU about what it would take for Morris to not even consider Baylor as an option. Morris's 3 requirements were: 1) a $500,000 raise 2) additional $$$ for staff raises 3) a firm start date in writing for the Indoor Practice Facility/Op Center. It's been a big deal at SMU that they haven't had this type of facility and Morris wants a firm start date by Summertime. SMU has agreed to all these terms and you won't see Morris the announcement for his raise/extension until he knows the IPF has a firm start date for construction. Chad signed the contract extension that Winter and there was an agreed start date for the IPF. After NSD another bit of news slipped out... The one that seemed to break the camels back for SMU. After the Baylor contract negotiation fiasco 2 members of the offensive staff started to encourage them to sign elsewhere because “we aren’t going to be here when you graduate” and "We're leaving as soon as possible" Those kids were some of the best recruits on commitment list and they proceeded to sign elsewhere after decommitting in December. One of those kids’ (Who decommitted and signed elsewhere) mothers grew up in Highland Park (Neighborhood in which SMU is in Dallas) and this information again got back to the football supporters. A few weeks before spring ball started SMU had a meeting with Chad to bring up all the stuff they had heard over the past year and essentially it was a heated discussion where both parties got everything off their chest. At the end of the meeting both were done with each other and they added a $0 buyout for Chad, as long as he continued to coach like he wanted to be here for the remainder of the year. SMU officials and Chad literally had almost no interaction the last 8 months he was on campus. From what i've been told everything about him saying he wasn't going to be here long, to telling the X recruit we aren't going to waste our time recruiting you, then telling recruits to look elsewhere and not sign with SMU he never denied..
So a big name up and coming coach didnt plan on staying at a shit P5 school for long and a coaches wife said something dumb?? And he can't show his face in Dallas yet pulled 6 kids out of the DFW area in the last 2 classes?? Seems like some SMU guy is a bit too full of himself
Abraham Lincoln famously stocked his cabinet with rivals so as to bring out the best in them and present himself with differing view points. Sounds like Gus is about to make Georgia howl.
He can't show his face at like one steakhouse in University Park and other than that he's fine. No one gives a fuck about SMU.
He had a good tenure like you said, that’s why we stan. Getting DW4 and transforming the offense gives him a pass for life with me. This is not nearly as bad a hire as people are making it out to be.
