"As far as coach London is concerned, I feel like I can strap up and play for that man right now. He's a great salesman. If he sold cars, he'd sell more cars than anybody. Coach London is like an uncle, or the type of guy you'd go to for advice. He's a role model. You want to be like him when you become a man and grow up."

If Watford signs a letter of intent at U.Va. he'll become the first Hampton High football player to sign with the Cavaliers since 2001. Former Hampton quarterback Marques Hagans was the last Crabber to sign with U.Va. Feb. 2 will be the first day recruits can sign a letter of intent.

While Watford will certainly get a chance to play at U.Va., it's not as if he has a clear path to a starting job. He'll have to beat out several other inexperienced quarterbacks for a prime spot on the depth chart when he gets there in the fall of 2011.

Quarterback Marc Verica is entering his senior season at U.Va., but the Cavaliers also have redshirt freshman Ross Metheny and incoming freshmen Michael Strauss, Mike Rocco, Miles Gooch and Jake McGee at the position. Rocco, Gooch and McGee could get looks at different positions in the future.

"(London) told me they're going to try (Rocco, Gooch and McGee) out at quarterback, but they're probably going to wind up playing different positions," Watford said. "I know anywhere I go I'm going to have to compete. That's no problem with me. I'll compete against anybody anytime."

ALL EYES ARE ON ? Tim Smith. The Chesapeake native arrived in Charlottesville as a heralded recruit and despite not getting a ton of chances as a rookie, Smith showed glimpses of what he's capable of on the field. One of the fastest players on the roster, Smith is a bona fide deep threat and we think the new staff will try to take advantage of that ability. He also has excellent hands, runs good routes and will be a factor in the return game. In short, we fully expect a major commitment to get the ball in Smith's hands, and we're excited to see what he can do with those chances.

Re: Welcome David Watford!! **Official THE University of Virginia Thread**

Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha High School has been a strong source of football talent for UVa in recent years.

Virginia was the first school to offer Moore.
In the 2011 class, the Cavaliers have already landed two commitments from the national powerhouse, Kelby Johnson and Jordan Lomax.

Another Stag, 2012 defensive end Michael Moore, the son of UVa assistant and former Cavalier great Shawn Moore, camped in Charlottesville on Saturday.

"It went well," said Moore. "I worked out at defensive end and had a really good time."

Moore worked out with defensive line coach Jeff Hanson.

"Coach Hanson is great. He is always pushing us to get the most out of all of us. I learned a lot on Saturday."

Virginia was the first school to offer the 6-foot-4, 255-pound prospect but an SEC program joined the mix this week.

"UVa has offered me as a defensive end but they are also recruiting me as a tight end. I camped at Tennessee this week and they have offered now as well. Maryland is the other the school that I am hearing from most seriously but they haven't offered yet."

Do the Cavaliers have an advantage in the recruitment of the rising junior?

"With my dad playing there and now coaching at UVa, obviously it is a school that I am very comfortable with. I have been to Virginia more times than I could count and it is always fun getting back down to Charlottesville to visit.

"Right now though, I am not sure what school I will attend. I will say, however, that Virginia is very high on my list and I can't imagine it not being high on my list throughout the recruiting process."

Moore visited Miami earlier this summer.

"I just went down to Miami on an unofficial visit. It was an interesting experience. I was impressed with the campus and the facilities."

Although there are almost 17 months remaining before Moore signs a letter of intent, he does have timetable for his college decision.

"I plan to decide before the start of my senior season. I want to commit no later than next August."

With former DeMatha players enrolled at Virginia and two more committed, Moore is hearing from friends about UVa more than he is from the Virginia staff.

"I hear about it at home but I am hearing about UVa at DeMatha even more. My former teammates that are already there love it. Kelby and Jordan obviously do too because they have committed already. UVa has a great reputation at DeMatha."

As a junior, Moore racked up eight sacks.

Corey Lillard is leaving the program.. damn :feelsbadman:

    Per Jeff White:
DEPARTURE: London said Sunday night that safety Corey Lillard has left the football program and may transfer to another school.

Lillard is a graduate of Liberty High in Bealeton. As a true freshman last season, he appeared in three games. Lillard was in for a total of 10 plays, all on special teams.

Other members of UVa's 2009 team who had eligibility remaining but, for various reasons, are no longer in the program include Javanti Sparrow, Lamar Milstead, Javaris Brown, Riko Smalls, Tory Allen-Ford and Quintin Hunter. Sparrow hopes to rejoin the team in 2011.

The Minnesota Vikings reached terms on a four-year deal with cornerback Chris Cook -- their top draft pick, a source with knowledge of the deal told NFL.com's Steve Wyche on Thursday morning. The second-round selection (No. 34 overall) will report with the rest of the team Thursday.

Cook likely will work into the Vikings' scheme in nickel coverages, but he could compete for a starting job with Cedric Griffin, who is rehabilitating from a torn ACL sustained in the NFC Championship Game loss to New Orleans.

Mike London plans to measure the 2010 season 'in increments'-

The final question of Virginia Coach Mike London's press conference centered on how the first-year coach of a program that went 3-9 last season will measure the upcoming campaign, in terms of whether he considers it a success. London said he has no victory benchmark that the team must reach in order for him to feel good about it once it has concluded.

Rather, he said he will break the season -- his entire first year at the helm of Virginia's football program, really -- into more specific categories and determine how he and the team performed. London has spent the last eight months canvassing the region in attempts to re-invigorate Virginia's fan base, repair relationships with high school coaches in certain areas of recruiting interest and convince recruits that Charlottesville is the place they want to be.

Those, he said, were the first steps. The next one will come Friday when the team begins training camp. And then, of course, there is the season opener Sept. 4 against Richmond, the program London left to take the Virginia job.

"It’s in increments and it’s in segments, and I think right now talking about meeting people and going out and re-investing, I consider that a plus," London said. "Talk about the recruiting that we want to do, I consider that a plus right now. So, to me, it’s just a series of improvements as we go along.

"We’ve done the community thing. Our players have been exposed to that. Now the season starts, so any part of the season that we’re showing that we’re very competitive, we’re playing with the temperament of the head coach and the coordinators, then I’ll consider that a plus.

"We don’t have a number of wins, whether that’s going to be a successful season or not. I mean, at the end of the year we’ll talk about if we’ve made enough strides or gains to consider the season a plus. But going into it right now, our mind-sets are focused. We’re ready to go. We’re excited. If you look around, the facilities have been upgraded, there’s a constant theme and message about what we want to be like, what we want to play like, how we want to act. And so, you know, we’re looking forward to having an opportunity to increase again and improve again on the field."

Yep that was the longest all year. 69 yards and he had a 56 yd against TCU.

    From Media day..

"London called sophomore RB Perry, "pound for pound, the strongest player on the team" and added that he has "the heart of a giant".

London mentioned grades aren't in to make a final decision about players. He didn't mention Payne, but it sounds like Payne is being watched closely.

Re: We got 5 pages!!! **Official THE University of Virginia Thread**

Here is a shot at a 2-Deep. Let me know what you think. I think a lot of the spots are clear but some key back-up roles are still getting worked out. It's very long winded. My Bad.

    Offense:

QB - Verica #1 to start the season. I think it's a short leash, and I'm torn between Strauss or Metheny to win out the second spot. My gut says Strauss.

RB - Dom Wallace #1. Perry Jones is my number two and he has shown he can catch out of the backfield. Keith Payne will get some time if London lets him stay.

FB - Terence Fells-Danzer #1 and Curt Orshoski in short yardage unless TFD really becomes a blocker.

WR - Tim Smith and Kris Burd #1 and it's obvious. I think Inman, Matt Snyder and Jared Green will all have to fight it out for the third spot. Perry Jones will play some wr. I am interested to see if Bobby Smith or Kevin Royal can make something happen. Although Royal may get worked with the TE's.

TE - Joe Torchia is #1. I guess Colter Phillips and Paul Freedman will fight out #2.

OT - Landon Bradley will start at LT and Oday Aboushi at RT. I expect to see Morgan Moses and Hunter Steward step in if either struggle or get injured. Morgan should be able to get in on some rushing downs.

OG - Austin Pasztor will start at LG and B.J. Cabbell at RG. Both have a lot of starts by now, but last year was a waste for their development. Luke Bowanko, Sean Cascarano are both on the 2nd. I believe that was how they came out of spring.

C - Mihota and Danny Aiken is our long snapper.

    Defense:

DE - Cam Johnson and Zane Parr are my 1st. I think Parr had 35 tckles and 3.5 sacks as a back- up. Cam will finally get to rush the passer non-stop. Jeremiah Mathis and Billy Schautz are the two I am looking for as top back-up. John Kevin-Dolce will get some chances to play outside. Maybe Jake Snyder get's out there.

DT - Matt Conrath and Nick Jenkins are my 1st. Jenkins has trimmed like 20 pounds and is looking much quicker. On Building the Program one of the coaches said "He felt slow and sluggish trying to carry the bulk to play 3-4 NT". Conrath has really long arms and can close some passing lanes. John-Kevin Dolce will get some reps, probably on blitzing downs. Will Hill and Justin Renfrow are the only back-ups and dt in thin on bodies. Renfrow is very athletic and can be disruptive.

OLB - WILL looks like Leroy Reynolds with Ausar Walcott, LoVante Battle as back-ups. SAM will probably be Jared Detrick with Darnell Carter as the top back up. Tucker Windle or Henry Coley could get some work at SAM. I think Coley was an underated recruit. Would be awesome if London could talk Miles Gooch into playing OLB.

MLB - Steve Greer at #1. He had 92 tckls and 5.5 TFL as a rfr. He got hurt in the spring and Aaron Taliaferro looked very good in his place. He was named the teams most improved player. It's pretty thin after that from what I can see.

CB - Ras-I Dowling(duh) and Chase Minnifield. Minnifield is a player I keep waiting for that break-out year from. Devin Wallace apparently looked really good in the spring and could compete for playing time. Javanti Sparrow was a big loss. He had tons of speed. Hopefully he gets his grades fixed and makes it back. Mike Parker is still around too.

Safety - I want Rodney McLeod and Dom Joseph. I'm not sure what Corey Mosley will do. He tried to go for too many knockout blows and wasn't always affective. He likes contact and seems very competitive. He was the starter last year. It sucks Corey Lillard left. I'm not sure what happened.

    Special Teams:

K - Robert Randolph 1st and I don't know, Drew Jarrett or Chris Hinkebein as back-up.
    P - Jimmy Howell and I don't know the back-up.

KR/PR - Tim Smith and Chase Minnifield. Perry Jones and Corey Mosely will get some chances.

    Seems right to me.

-I think Inmans going to lock up the 3rd spot early on. Should've sat out last year with the injury - but then again a lot of shit was mismanaged last year.
-Issac Cain should probably see a lot of time at the OG spot I think
-Definitely think Minnifield wins the 2nd CD spot - he's been pretty solid and I think experience wins out.

and this brings up an interesting point for me from last season. yes, ras-i is probably out best player and has a chance to be outstanding last year and in no way do I think we'll see a repeat of last year...but how come literally no one last year was talking about how disappointing he was? I mean, yeah we were terrible everywhere - but it was pretty obvious to me and anyone I watched with, Chris Cook was outplaying Ras-I every snap. I guess it's not a popular thing to say, especially for a team/fanbase desperate to hold on to any positives, but I'm expecting big big things from Dowling this year, I just don't think it's a definite.

I didn't know what to make of Issac Cain. He has been listed in some of the 2-deeps I've come accross. I just never hear anything about him.

Ras-I struggling last year is like a family secret we don't like talking about. I guess it's because he is the one guy from last year that really made any impact. His stats were fairly good and he had some really good games. I think the lack of Ras-I on any pre-season first teams is the biggest indicator of how last season went. Two straight years as the second team corner and you don't even get projected as a first teamer your senior year? That doesn't just happen

Here's some news about Quintin Hunter. Looks like he's going to play QB for the Dukes.

HARRISONBURG - Four days before opening football practice, James Madison has added a transfer wide receiver. Quintin Hunter, who left the University of Virginia after the spring semester, said Friday he has enrolled at JMU and will play for the Dukes this season.

"I'm going to a place where I can contribute the best," Hunter said Friday.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Hunter was rated a four-star prospect by the recruiting website Rivals.com coming out of Orange County High School. He chose U.Va. over Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Maryland and Stanford, he said.

Former Virginia coach Al Groh decided early last season to move Hunter from quarterback to wide receiver and play him as a true freshman. Hunter had one 13-yard catch in nine games. He went through spring practice with the Cavaliers and new coach Mike London before deciding to leave the school.

Friday, he was vague about his reasons.

"It was more for me," Hunter said. "U.Va. is a great school, great program. I had to make a choice for myself."

Hunter said his decision had nothing to do with London's hiring.

"The coaching staff, that wasn't a reason for me to change," Hunter said. "I loved the new coaching staff."

He will have three seasons of eligibility for the Dukes, who went 6-5 and missed the playoffs last year.

Hunter visited JMU's campus for summer football camps while in high school. The Dukes recruited him but he had his heart set on Virginia, he said. When he decided to leave, he contacted his high school coach and asked him to find out if JMU was still interested in him, he said. That was all last month.

Hunter was recruited to U.Va. by Wayne Lineburg, now the offensive coordinator at Richmond. Richmond's first-year head coach is Latrell Scott, who was Hunter's position coach as a wide receiver at Virginia.

Still, Hunter said he never contacted Lineburg or Scott and did not consider transferring to play for the Spiders.

"I never got in touch with him," Hunter said. "I didn't think about Richmond at all."

Scott said Friday he was "out of the loop" regarding Hunter's transfer, but thinks his former player can have a major impact for the Dukes.

"I think Quintin has the ability to be a really good player in this league," Scott said Friday night. "Quintin was a very talented kid for us at Virginia. I hate that we have to play against him."

Wide receiver is a position where JMU is lacking experience, but not talented prospects.

The Dukes, who report to preseason practice Sunday and have their first workout on Monday, will have 15 wide receivers on their roster, but only three with any experience. Hunter is expected to begin practicing Tuesday.

Senior Marcus Turner and juniors Kerby Long and Julius Graves have combined for just 45 career receptions, with 29 of those coming from Turner.

"We felt like at the end of spring training we needed to find another receiver," Matthews said Friday.

JMU will likely play a bevy of young wide-outs this year, including former R.E. Lee High School standout Dae'Quan Scott, Rennard Robinson and Arlandis Harvey, all redshirt freshmen. Scott will be suspended for at least one game after an offseason that saw him charged with purchasing stolen goods and purchasing alcohol underage - separate incidents.

After the second charge, Matthews said Scott would face a suspension during the season, but the coach has yet to decide the length of the punishment.

Kavon Seaton, who was also charged in the stolen goods case, moved from quarterback to wide receiver at the end of spring practice.

Hunter was a high school quarterback and - when JMU recruited him in 2009 - it envisioned him playing that spot for the Dukes. Now, Matthews said Hunter's place is as a pass-catcher.

"We want him as a wide receiver," Matthews said. "If he had come here initially out of high school, we would have played him at quarterback."

As for himself, Hunter still would like a shot to play under center.

"I mean, I kind of do still want to be a quarterback. In my mind I do," Hunter said. "But receiver is the best position for me to go to to transfer."

Madison is actually deep at quarterback, with starter Drew Dudzik, a senior, backup Justin Thorpe, a sophomore, and two true freshmen from Texas joining the team this month - Jace Edwards and Henry Hunter.

Quintin Hunter also said he plans to try out for the JMU basketball team, though he said he's had no contact with the Dukes' hoops program yet.

JMU basketball coach Matt Brady said he was unaware of Hunter and his transfer to Madison.

"That's the first time I've ever heard that name in my life," Brady said Friday. "Last year I would have said [yes] in a heartbeat, but this year I wouldn't envision a need. I'm willing to look at anything to make this program better. But right now, he'd have to be pretty good to crack the rotation."

London said today that Morgan Moses will be slotted at right tackle and it looks as if he will be backing up Oday Aboushi at that slot. Sean Cascarano is backing up Landon Bradley at left tackle and London said they have been extremely pleased with his progress through the summer.
