Everyone just take a minute to marinate on mullet’s proposition. Josh McMillian might have hurt his knee so he wishes Mack Wilson would’ve returned. Those words make zero fucking sense.
Pretty cool video on the Football Instagram page where the team is having a dinner with their parents and Saban speaks for a bit and all the coaches introduce themselves.
From a depth perspective the loss is bad but let’s not act like McMillian wasn’t going to lose that job eventually to Kaho or Lee
It’s the first week of fall camp. You know damn well that Saban doesn’t jump the veteran immediately.
Hey guys it’s gonna be ok we still got *checks notes* A true freshman and an super flaky kid waiting in the wings
Like rescinded because you’re being disingenuous about the importance of players on defense. Obviously Ray is more important than Josh McMillian
Listen man, after last season, the middle of the field worries me. I hope you’re right and Lee steps in because I like him a lot.. but let’s not pretend that every TF that’s ever been a meaningful contributor hadn’t already been hyped up at this point and we just haven’t seen that from Lee. We hadn’t seen it to the point a third year player with basically no meaningful experience had his spot locked up
I wouldn’t say he had it locked up at all and by all accounts Lee had a great spring. Again, the depth at linebacker is concerning but I don’t think it’s the end of the world that we lost a guy who’s a career backup with little upside.
I think the lack of hype surrounding Lee has more to do with the fact that everybody was focused on Dean and Henry T during recruiting. Like CB said, he had a good spring and looked good in the spring game.
Dude I’ve been team Lee since we landed him. Put on my armor and defended him in the recruiting thread against all comers. Like the way he looks, reminds me of a more athletic SDH. That being said, the hype I’m speaking on is wrt where he’s at so far in camp. I see the potential is there big time but I’d feel better if it didn’t seem like he was running with the threes all the time.
Hell, it may end up being a blessing. Throw the kid into the fire and let him take his lumps. He’s obviously a better option athletically speaking and has good instincts. Hopefully it works itself out. It’s not like we gotta ton to worry over with the schedule
The Sanders injury sucks, but without more injuries at RB, we are fine there. ILB is one place we could not afford injuries. No point in playing down the McMillan injury. No, he hadn’t made an impact yet, but the fact that he was the clear starter there maybe says something about how awful our depth is. Piss poor ILB recruiting of the last couple of years is coming to bite us.
Did the recruiting analysts just completely whiff on him or did he show that much potential and then completely bust? If it's the later is it because of a lack of athleticism, he's dumb and can't figure out the scheme, or both? I know there have been reports that he has actually looked decently good in camp. I'm sure we're all cautiously optimistic yet a little skeptical on that.
Honestly, in situations like this I think some of it comes down high school coaches not being prepared to develop truly elite talent. In 3A Alabama football, someone with 5* athletic ability like that can basically wreck an entire offense with a defensive game plan of "Ben, go tackle the guy with the ball." It's easy for a coach to coast on a player like that - he's getting stats and recruiting hype and you're getting wins easier. It doesn't help prepare the player for top end D1 football though. I don't know that's how it worked at Gordo but I've had enough rural football experience around here to know it's not uncommon.
Saw that Davis was the 184 overall ranked player in 247 history and it made me go look: Foster is the only LB we've signed with a higher rating than him. Anoma, Hand, Surtain, Collins, and Sopsher are the only other defensive players rated higher than him. If he never contributes in any meaningful way, he'd be an all-time bust for us.
