Owsley nailed it. When he played the best defenses he was not good. He is incredible and I loved watching him play. But all the problems I listed yesterday absolutely have to be fixed or we won't win the SEC or the natty. I don't know why that's so hard to understand. Everyone is saying he's great. But he also completely shit the bed in the biggest games. He can't be doing that. He was still a young player and had a whole offseason to learn. Here's to hoping that he will fix those problems.

There’s no way you can’t add the Georgia game as a bad game. He was awful.

I think he has the ability to be the Heisman, top draft pick, etc., but it’s not controversial to say he’s got to show it against the best teams, because he didn’t last year.

The ability is there but he’s got to do a better job of reading through progressions and taking what the defense gives him because the slinging it all over the place with no cares that works against Ole Miss and Arkansas, isn’t what’s going to work against Georgia, Clemson, and others.

Just so we're all clear, this is Tua "shitting the bed" in the national championship game:

Jalen threw for 295+ yards once in 3 seasons and only managed to exceed 200 yards 7 times. It's like y'all forgot what it's like to watch him roll to his right and throw an incomplete right before running out of bounds. He was 12/22 for 112yds/1TD when we lost to Auburn, 16/24 for 120/2 against Clemson, and 3/8 for 21 before getting pulled against Georgia. THAT is shitting the bed.

I have no issue with an argument that Tua is either kindof a pussy and/or just too fragile. That is certainly a possibility.

Personally, I'm gonna miss gunslinger Tua. When he's on it's the most fun/exciting thing I've ever witnessed. I think Saban asking Tua to "take what the defense gives him" is more from the whole team perspective. We had no ability to sustain long drives and control the clock. When Tua was asked to manage the game from that perspective, it was awful. When your offense scores every 4-5 plays it wears your defense out. I think the hope is that offensively we get back to a physical run first to set up the pass attack. TBH tho, I don't know what Tua's supposed to do when Jeudy/Waddle/Ruggs/Smith take a 5 yard slant or WR screen to the house.

I don’t think anyone itt is trying to say Jalen is a better passer than Tua, so I’m unsure where that came from.

Tua’s stats don’t show near the story of that game either; he gave them 14 points in the first half and fumbled another time. The difference between a 17-16 and 31-16 score if he takes care of the ball.

He has to learn how to react to defensive alignments, and not just go by his pre-snap read. Clemson completely exposed that, and now that it’s out I expect him to see a lot more disguised coverages, delayed blitzes, etc this year.

I’m not asking Tua to stop trying to thread needles and take shots, but what we don’t need him doing is throwing a deep shot to a double covered wideout when a safety valve is wide open. That happened too much against UGA and Clemson.

I'm all for the idea that he can improve. There's no question about it. True So QBs are gonna make mistakes. But the idea that he's "soft" or a "pussy" or "not football smart" is a fucking joke. He played 3 quarters of that Georgia game on an ankle that needed surgical repairs and wrecked OU less than 4 weeks later. FOH with that soft nonsense.

I'd actually prefer it if Tua played softer this season. Maybe then he wouldn't do dumb shit like trying to juke two UGA defenders on a sprained ankle.

I’m not sure wrecking one of the worst statistical defenses of all time should be your trump card. And I think it’s fine to question his footballing acumen given he operated completely on pre-snap reads. Injuries certainly hampered him at times, and it sucks they seem to follow him around. Like I’ve said, he has as much to prove as any player in the country this year. He needs to put together a complete, 4 quarter, performance when it matters most.

Please tell me what I'm ignoring. I'm not saying there aren't things he can improve on. Everything about him needing to learn to go through his progressions and taking what he's given are true. But he doesn't have a goddamn thing to prove. No one in the history of Alabama football has played QB as well as him. That's an indisputable fact. What the fuck does he have to prove 8 months before he's taken as the #1 overall draft pick?

Again, I don’t think anyone disagrees that he’s the most gifted QB we’ve ever had. He needs to prove he can stay healthy for a 15 game season. He needs to prove he can make adjustments and reads after the ball is snapped and coverages have changed. He needs to prove he can take what’s given instead of forcing the hero shot. And most importantly, he needs to prove he can beat Clemson.

Yeah, I don't agree with this at all. That seems like an extreme exaggeration.

He doesn't have anything to prove to me after putting the team on his back to win a National Championship and going into Baton Rouge vs. the #3 team in the country with an elite defense and putting together an amazing performance on a bum leg.

We certainly don’t win the national championship without him, and he obviously deserves all the credit in the world for that. No argument there. I think the LSU game is a bit different as we probably could’ve trotted Mac out there and still won. His TD run was something else, though.

I’m not saying I dislike Tua; I love him, and he’s arguably the most exciting football player I’ve been able to watch at Alabama. But if he doesn’t make improvements in certain parts of his game, I’m not sure we’re beating UGA or especially Clemson. That’s all.

Excluding the Citadel and OU, Tua ended the season against the S&P+ 5th, 1st, 6th, 8th, and then 3rd ranked defenses. In those 5 games he went 96/154 (62.3%) for 1,242 yards for 11 touchdowns and 6 ints. Call that an average game of 19/31 for 248 2 tds and 1 int against top 8 defenses. Even ignoring the injuries, that's a solid stat line against the best defenses CFB has to offer.

Tua really excels at finding the 2nd and 3rd option when going through his route progression. To me that's an indicator of "football smarts". Whereas his predecessor never could figure that part out.

I agree he is formulaic and Tebow-esque in his interviews. It doesn't help that he's crazy religious. But I think that has more to do with his weird upbringing.

Honestly the only glaring thing he needs to improve on is staying composed after getting hit and throwing the ball away/giving up on plays. And the latter benefits the former. I'm not worried.

I mean, these aren’t crazy complaints that we have about Tua and they aren’t confined to tt. Scouts are saying this. Non Bama fans are saying this. The issue we have with Tua is that he’s so insanely talented that we completely changed the offensive philosophy to allow him to go nuts. If this continues and he does not manage to work out these kinks then look for similar results

Soooo, not to derail this Tua debate that is definitely going places, but looking back at our '19 commit list really makes you appreciate the talent evaluation we (still) have. It was an all time type group with maybe the best DL haul on paper ever signed, including the top player in the country, and 4 of the bottom 6 recruits in the class may make more of an impact than any of the others above them this season:

    (Metchie, Dale, Billingsley, Reichard)

I feel like half of us would have been cool with dropping Metchie and maybe even Dale despite hearing how high the staff was on him if it meant getting a couple of the higher rated guys we were in on.
