I don’t know about that. Sunseri is one of our best recruiters.
I feel pretty confident in saying Strong would be an upgrade over Golding, old guy or not
Oh, you mean the guys already complaining about Dabo’s cult of personality despite the fact that there’s a slim-to-none chance he ever leaves Clemson? Those guys?
Strong can recruit whereas Golding has closed a single recruit ever. That alone gives him the edge. And it’s bizarre to act like the game has passed him by when his defenses at Florida had great edge rushers, elite Mikes, and ball-hawking DBs.
I think it’s all the whites in this thread that are dragging it down imnsho
That’s one hell of a galaxy brained take sir wham
Favored tomorrow? That’s surprising as fuck but I’ll take it. Hope we can come away with the win. It’s big if anything for recruiting but we’ve got to be able to win at home. That’s what keeps people coming back and invested.
I hope Herb goes for a double double and dunks on Watford with one fucking hand too.
Jim McElwain was a great offensive coordinator 10 years ago, too.
yeah but I don’t see any drunk naked shark photos of Charlie Strong floating around the internet.
Usually imma take a Owsley football opinion over a Clown Baby every time, but I think you’re wrong here.
Plenty of good coordinators who make terrible head coaches. I don’t think his record at USF is indicative of his ability to coach defense at all because he didn’t coach the defense at USF.
Golding has proven he’s ass against modern offense and can’t recruit for shit. Strong has proven this at one point in his career, spectacularly so.
Gun to my head, who’s gonna field the best defense with similar players?
Is he the best out there? Probably not.
is there evidence to support that assertion?
Seems like when you have coaches that were once successful like Chizik and Strong then they are out of the game or in lesser roles for a while, this idea forms that they are still elite and it isn't really backed up by anything and isn't verifiable.
Someone ask Sam Bradford if Strong can coach against elite pass spread offenses.
It’s already been established Strong was a very good DC a decade plus ago.
Strong isn’t the same coach he was 12 years ago.
But the question was if he can plan against elite passing offenses. I quoted a game against the best one in cfb at the time.
Re Strong as a recruiter:
This article argues that while at first glance it appears Strong did recruit well at Texas, he also had some big time misses.
The recruiting services don't rank head coaches in recruiting so all you can go by is how the Texas classes did and then South Florida.
The point is that the game has changed enormously since that game. And guys that were good that long ago can be washed by now.
I'm sure I could go find some good games that Charlie Weiss called as OC at Notre Dame from like 15 years ago.
Gun to your head - Strong or Golding for 2020?
And mine is that the way you beat an elite passing offense hasn’t changed. You recruit DL than can get to the QB and DBs that can press tf out of college WRs.
And then you hope a guy like Burrow doesn’t just have a day...because that’s gonna happen.
hard to look at it in a vacuum because you've got to consider continuity and the implications in future years beyond 2020. If we hire Strong just because nothing is worse than Golding, but Strong ends up being slightly better or about the same as Golding and our defense still sucks, then I don't know if we are in any better position and could be in a worse position due to the continuing coaching turnover narrative. Having said all of that:
Gun to my head and considering this in a vacuum, I'm going with Charlie Strong because Pete Golding is worthless.
I think that's a gross oversimplification of the evolution of football offenses since the 2000s. There is no evidence that Charlie Strong is still an elite DC
You’re absolutely right...but you’re not hiring him as a DC. An analyst with at least a full year to be in the coaching room with Saban seems like enough of a tryout if you move on from Golding.
And fwiw, I don’t think the game always passes up elite coordinators that get washed up - sometimes they just lose the fire and connection to the players. Or they become thought of as elite from coaching a couple of guys that would have made absolutely anyone look good.
I'm absolutely on board with him as an analyst or position coach. But the discussion is him as a DC. Noone is opposed to him as an analyst or position coach.
Hey now, don’t lump me in there, and I know Owsley is same. I despise Dabo’s personality, but if he comes here and wins games, I’ll put the dear leader’s portrait in the dining room.
And now we diverge. Think Mac was a pretty good OC at best.
And on Strong, I don’t think any of us are saying he couldn’t be a really good DC, it’s just there’s a good bit of risk, not a slam dunk. Sounds like it’s an off field position anyway, so that’s great move.
This is reasonable. To also be fair also to Gump's point, saying that he is still a great DC was a bit premature, but he's been a head coach for years now. USF, Texas and Louisville not being juggernauts on D isn't something I'd use as an indictment on him in a head coaching position: see, Saban the previous year (two years, really). Their responsibilities as the head coach are much different than as strictly defensive playcallers/game planning for opposing offenses alone. If that's all Nick had to focus on, I guarantee we would have been multitudes better.
I lean towards Strong still being capable of calling a defense even in the modern age, considering he went up against one of the first iterations of modern offense in practice every day for years at UF, and as pointed out, did extremely well defending elite spread offenses, such as the 2008, Bradford led "greatest offense in CFB history" (people forget how adamant many were about this notion until UF absolutely shut them down) was held to 14 points.
Either way, having him as an off the field analyst that helps with weekly prep is nothing for us to complain about. I could see the Kiffin:Sark::Golding:Strong analogy here, except Kiffin was excellent and couldn't stop chasing nubile tail, and Golding is just awful.
Anyone gonna be in Tuscaloosa today for this game? Cecil said less than 1000 tickets remained on like Tuesday so hopefully we get a full sell out. Last big game for us at home this season.
No chance in hell the assailants let Gump ramble this much before getting to his answer. He’s dead before the third sentence.
You’re pulling out all the stops to keep Pete Golding, huh
Charlie Strong officially defensive coordinator according to his Wikipedia. Checkmate, beta boys
Looks like his profile was edited by an anonymous user. Sounds air tight and very much NOT FLUID
oh wow. Give me that double double with the broken hand Herb.
im loving the boos anytime watford touches the ball
Love seeing the student section give Watford shit. Fuck him
Rebounding has been nice
Herb gonna have 10 this half.
Lolololol. Running the break with one hand.
Herb plays better with one hand than two
we absolutely wouldnt have lost to arky, tenn, or au with him healthy
Herb out here dominating on defense and cleaning the boards with 1 hand.
Per usual we are getting fucked by the officials
literally shoved two possessions in a row so they could get the rebound. No call. Ugh.
I mean it’s just comical at this point
