Per source close to team, Dolphins today are working out former Alabama All American LB Reuben Foster, the 31st overall pick in 2017 who missed 2019 and 2020 with major knee injury,” Jackson said. “Health fine now and he’s looking for comeback. Overlapped with McDaniel in SF in 2018.”

So with the addition of Sears I think you see, at least starting out.

    G- Sears/Bradley

    G- Burnett/Griffen

SF/Wing- Miller/Bridges/Miles - Bridges starts if he commits and Brandon Miller moves to the 4

    Wing/PF- Miller/Gurley/Clowney

    C- Bediako/Pringle

That’s a pretty damn good starting 5 who can shoot. At every spot. And have length everywhere. 6-6, 6-7, 6-8, 7-0. With length off the bench as well, and some firepower. And that’s with spots left to fill too. I’d love another stretch big like we found with Bruner. We are still after a few guards/wing type guys. Bridges, Llewellyn, Broome, Akot.

Oats definitely saw that our defensive issues were 1. a lack of effort and mindset (flipping the roster) 2. a lack of length and depth at guard and wing spots. Especially wing with any type of offensive game. Gary was awesome to watch fight for boards and stuff but he made himself very easy to take out of the game offensively. He didn’t rebound at a high enough rate on the offensive boards to really manifest into a major threat. Miles is too inconsistent to really expect much from game in game out. I think he shows flashes and I think he really does want to be good but he’s erratic with decisions and a streaky shooter at best. Adding Sears also helps Bradley because he can shoulder a major part of the load at PG and allow Bradley to play a facilitating game like he really likes to play and not have as much pressure to score game in game out. He’s a different type of PG. Defensive minded, great passer and wants to get assists rather than scoring 20 a game. He’s a guy who gives you 8-12 points, 6-8 assists, 4-6 rebounds and a few steals/blocks. And we need a guy like that at that guard spot because Sears isn’t the greatest defensive player himself. Really interested to see how Oats fill this roster with the remaining slots. I expect another commitment within the next week or so.

The Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama System met Friday in Huntsville, Ala., and approved contracts for new coaching hires Joe Cox, Coleman Hutzler, Travaris Robinson and Eric Wolford, as well as raises for four returning assistant coaches and other staff members.

Joining the Crimson Tide football program this offseason, Cox, Hutzler, Robinson and Wolford have contracts that extend through February of 2024. Cox will coach Alabama’s tight ends this fall, Hutzler will lead the outside linebackers as well as coordinate special teams, Robinson is coaching the cornerbacks and Wolford is overseeing the Tide offensive linemen.

“I'm excited about the new coaches that we have,” said Alabama head coach Nick Saban earlier this spring. “Every one of those guys have made a very positive contribution with their energy, enthusiasm, their knowledge, how they helped contribute to solving some of the issues and the problems that we sort of uncovered in self-scout, in terms of things that we need to improve on. We're excited about the staff.”

The returning assistant coaches that received extensions included running backs coach Robert Gillespie, safeties coach Charles Kelly, defensive line coach Freddie Roach (just a raise) and wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins. Entering his fourth season in Tuscaloosa, Wiggins received the largest bump in pay of the quartet, moving from $575,000 up to $850,000.

The only Tide on-field assistant coaches that didn’t receive extensions were defensive coordinator Pete Golding and offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien. Golding signed a three-year extension last year, however, while O’Brien is entering the final year of his contract with UA.

In addition to the eight assistants, the Board of Trustees also approved new deals for UA staff members Jeff Allen, David Ballou, Daniel Bush, Ellis Ponder, Sal Sunseri, Drew Svoboda and Bob Welton. After serving as on-field assistants in 2021, Sunseri and Svoboda both moved into off-field roles this offseason, serving as senior special assistants to the head coach.

Allen is Alabama’s associate athletics director for sports medicine, Ballou is the director of sports performance, Bush is the director of football recruiting, Ponder is the associate athletics director and football chief operating officer and Welton is the director of player personnel.

Men’s basketball assistant coach Bryan Hodgson also earned a raise through June 30, 2024. Soccer coaches Wes Hart and Mike Piserchio also received contract extensions. New contracts for new volleyball coaches Rashinda Reed and Chelsi Carter were approved, as well.

Below is a full list of new contracts for assistant football coaches and other staff members:

    Jeff Allen – $400,000 through Feb. 28, 2025 (up from $270,000)

David Ballou – $700,000 through February 2024 (up from $550,000)

    Daniel Bush – $165,000 through February 2023

    Chelsi Carter – $72,000 through December 2022

    Joe Cox – $325,000 through February 2024

Robert Gillespie – $565,000 through February 2024 (up from $535,000)

    Wes Hart – $162,000 through January 2026

    Bryan Hodgson – $425,000 through June 30, 2024

    Coleman Hutzler – $495,000 to $595,000 through February 2024

Charles Kelly – $850,000 through February 2024 (up from $825,000)

    Mike Piserchio – $90,000 to $125,000 through January 2023

    Ellis Ponder – $240,000 through February 2023

    Rashinda Reed – $200,000 to $215,000 through December 2026

Freddie Roach – $750,000 through February 2024 (up from $720,000)

    Travaris Robinson – $800,000 through February 2024

    Sal Sunseri – $695,000 through February 2023

    Drew Svoboda – $450,000 through February 2023

Bob Welton – $235,000 through February 2024 (up from $225,000)

Alabama held its second of three scrimmages on Saturday afternoon – a two-hour, game-like practice at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Here are nuggets from the Crimson Tide’s scrimmage:

    – One source I talked to did not waste time mentioning a Bryce Young downfield pass to Jahmyr Gibbs for a 97-yard touchdown. Gibbs and fellow transfer Jermaine Burton were a couple of the scrimmage standouts, with head coach Nick Saban revealing Burton caught seven catches and made “a couple of big plays.” Young also threw a 40-yard touchdown to JoJo Earle, while freshman running back Jamarion Miller crossed the goal line on a short run.

    – No. 2 quarterback Jalen Milroe threw a 15-yard touchdown to tight end Robbie Ouzts. Saban said he has been encouraged by the progress that the redshirt freshman has made and of the two interceptions on Saturday, they “really weren’t his fault.” That being said, quite a few passes ended up in the hands of an Alabama defensive back with several being pick-sixes.

Some of them bounced off the hands of the UA wide receivers, which had too many drops. But overall, Young and Milroe had good days throwing the ball. One source was also impressed by freshman Ty Simpson, who has a live arm. He just didn’t have a lot of time to throw.

    – Safety Kristian Story intercepted two passes and dropped what would have been a third. Brian Branch, Malachi Moore and Jahquez Robinson all picked off throws – with Branch catching his eventual 40-yard return off a tip – and returned them for defensive touchdowns.

    – Working with the second-team defense, Story was a defensive standout, per one source. On the defensive line, Justin Eboigbe had a strong day, too, while linebacker Jaylen Moody stood out while working alongside Henry To’o To’o with the ones. Will Anderson was back, and though he only played a few snaps, he lived in the backfield. “Thank God he knows the rules about not hitting the quarterback,” one source said about the 2021 Nagurski Trophy winner.

    – The offensive line that opened the scrimmage with the first offense consisted of, from left to right, Kendall Randolph, Javion Cohen, Seth McLaughlin, Damieon George and JC Latham. Randolph also worked at right tackle Saturday, and Saban said the super senior has worked exclusively at tackle this spring and not tight end. Latu was the first tight end and joined wide receivers Burton, Traeshon Holden and JoJo Earle on the field to start the practice.

    – From a special teams standpoint, placekicker Will Reichard was 5-for-6 with a long make of 53 yards. Jack Martin also attempted a couple of field goals and made them both. Although they were not live, Burton and Earle were back deep to return punts for the Crimson Tide.

*** What’s next: Alabama has two more practices prior to the annual A-Day Game on April 16. The Crimson Tide will return to the field Tuesday, April 12, and again Thursday, April 14.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Alabama football team continues to work its way through spring practice. On Saturday, the Crimson Tide held its second scrimmage inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. Soon after the scrimmage, we were able to pull a few interesting tidbits of information from head coach Nick Saban.

We also gathered a few notes from other sources who were in attendance on Saturday. Here’s what we learned:

    • All three of Alabama’s scholarship running backs who participated in Saturday’s scrimmage had productive runs. That trio includes transfer Jahmyr Gibbs, redshirt junior Trey Sanders and freshman Jamarion Miller. Saban hinted at the production by saying the offense “made really good plays running the football.” In what might be surprising news to some, one source came away from the scrimmage being most impressed with Miller.
    • Bryce Young and Jalen Milroe both threw interceptions on Saturday, but both quarterbacks were still impressive. Saban even mentioned that the two interceptions from Milroe “weren’t really his fault.” One message I got from someone in attendance said that “No. 2 is having a really good day at QB.” His top play came via a red zone strike to tight end Robbie Ouzts.
    • The same source also said that Ty Simpson still looks like a freshman, but noted that Simpson made some impressive throws during Friday’s practice session. Following the scrimmage, Saban said that the former five-star is “really conscientious, really trying to learn, but needs to continue to get more and more opportunities in practice so that he can gain the confidence that he needs to be able to go out there and play.”
    • At this point, the offensive line has a lot further to go than the defensive line, but that news shouldn’t come as a surprise. Alabama’s defensive front is arguably the most seasoned position group on the team, especially when getting further into the depth. Plus, the offensive line is trying to replace both tackles from last season and has two potential starters out for the spring.
    • Alabama’s defense had multiple interceptions that were returned for touchdowns, but one of the more noteworthy turnovers came from Brian Branch. According to someone in attendance, the junior defensive back came on a blitz, tipped a Bryce Young pass to himself and returned it for a score.
    • Deontae Lawson continues to show growth as a second-year linebacker. Apparently, he was “all over the field” during the scrimmage, but that mostly came from playing with the second team. Jaylen Moody also looked the part, whether that’s playing alongside Lawson with the second team or starter Henry To’o To’o on the first team. This position battle seems to be making both players better.
