Saying Daboll did the best he could with the offense: 1) shows how limited his ability as an OC is 2) is a very different point than saying he was good at fitting his offense to our personnel (clearly he wasn't or you wouldn't be doing this goal post shifting)
2016 - OC/QBs: Kiffin - SEC OPOY 2017 - OC/QBs: Daboll - Benched in title game 2018 - OC/QBs: Locksley/Enos - Wins us the SEC 2019 - OC/QBs: Gundy/Riley - 2nd in Heisman Weird how successful he's been under literally every other coach he's had before and after Daboll, if anyone would struggle fitting the offense to him.
Jalen had a higher passer rating in 17 than he did 16 . Our offense couldn’t reach its full potential with him under center, and I don’t think that’s a remotely hot take.
It's also not remotely the argument that was initially made. Sorry, no need for me to come off like a dick. I agree that with Daboll at the helm, the offense couldn't reach its full potential with Jalen starting. I just strongly disagree that fitting an offense to its personal was a strength of Daboll's.
I’m team Daboll. I always felt like he kinda got a raw deal. I have nothing to back that up whatsoever just how I feel for some reason.
My take has always been that Daboll knew his offense would work with Tua so he wasn’t willing to change it for Jalen. That unwillingness to adapt to Jalen’s strengths held back the offense. But, when Tua came in, his offense shined.
Saban coached a hole in the earth that game. It’ll take a fucking take a Jesus Christ miracle of a game to supplant that as my all time favorite football game (including 2nd and 24)
This is excellent with Cubelic because he knows wtf he’s talking about and is asking Nick the right questions.
so let me get this straight, out of the greatest run in history, we’ve had like only 1 or 2 years of competent coordinators on both sides of the ball in nearly 15 seasons? some of y’all can’t be pleased
I bought in because of the record setting Brady years more so than the Penn State sliver of success. I hope we never hire someone else that peaked while Brady was their QB now.
The funny thing is most people around here suck Kiffin’s dick to no-end, but he was probably the most frustrating one to me.
Kirby coached some atrocious defenses in 13 and 14. He was also a pussy and gave up 3rd and long all the time .
I get why he's playcalling style is frustrating but there's no denying he knew who his playmakers were and how to get them the ball. Even if it took running 25 sweeps to set up the deep ball.
I'll always cut he and Daboll slack because they not so quietly were largely responsible for bringing on massive changes to our offensive playbook and philosophy. The same one BoB is drowning currently while we're tossing life rafts at them until we can get another rehabbing OC in next season.
A great OC seems like the hardest hire to make right now, more so than DC. They are so in demand for HC jobs, not just college but even making big jumps to NFL HC.
Kirby's improved as a coach (unsurprisingly), but he also has one hell of a staff atm. Boom and Schumann, Lanning as well last year, then Monken on O who has turned out to be one of the most efficient playcallers in college in terms of putting his playmakers in position to consistently win. He has year 3 Stetson playing like a legitimate Heisman candidate. I'm sure Schumann was close with Kirby from his time here in Tuscaloosa, but man would it have been ideal to grab him while Lanning held the higher title over there.
Can't forget the Munster family TE coach who has randomly turned them into the premiere destination for TE's as well.
Cohen and Ekiyor are returning starters, combining to play in 29 games last season at left and right guard, respectively. While experience is always a plus, Saban has said he wants to see the offensive line be more physical, and according to teammates, that describes Booker’s play. “Book is another great player on the offensive line,” left tackle Tyler Steen said. “He’s very physical, very mean, very very athletic. He also brings that energy and juice from a young dude that definitely could get a little contagious for the rest of the offensive line. He brings that energy. He’s a great player, very mean, very aggressive. It’s great to have somebody like that on the O-line.”
remember when mclaughlin played last year and the line looked much better during that stretch? good thing he went back to the bench.
Need more of this. Also - love Jalen but 2016 defense / ST NOT’s bailed us out quite a bit that season.
