we like coastal crust with the kids on James Island. Soccer area outside and kids love the pizza. Not too far from Folly. I don’t know Folly at all but the river dogs games are always a hit with our family.
Aquarium is nice Horse carriage tour Firefly distillery doesn't have a playground or anything like that, but tons of space to run around
I should mention I have two young boys who are essentially feral. they would be on those horses, have the harnesses cut and streaking down the main within minutes
Good to visit: -Revelry -Edmund's Oast (also has good high end food) Solid local brews: -Westbrook (IPA or gose) -Coast (IPA or kolsch) -Munkle (German/Belgian styles) -Holy City (Washout Wheat, Pluff Mud Porter) -Palmetto (IPA or Espresso Porter)
A couple I left off: -Frothy Beard (been in the game a while, solid) -Charles Towne Fermentory (pretty cunty) -SNAFU (sours only)
Edmunds oast on the north end of town is 10/10 and there's tex mex and other stuff in the same little square. Perfect for psycho children.
A buddy recently took up a position with Charleston Fermentory and I visited the beer garden just outside of downtown and was a big fan.
Restaurants visited this weekend: Lenoir (Downtown) - Nicer southern restaurant. Need reservation; I like the small size of the dining room. Food quite good if not great. Pollo Guapo (Folly Road) - Meh. They make good rotisserie chicken and put it on tacos etc. but there's a good many flies around and place doesn't feel super well maintained. Bowen's Island (Folly) - Good seafood shack on the water. Fried shrimp were best followed by fried oysters. Crabcake and fish ok. Pacifico draft for $6 is nice. A good many other drafts for $8. Frozen drinks looked good but didn't fuck around.
Visiting Charleston for the first time over Labor Day weekend with my wife - what neighborhoods should we look at to stay in? Most important to us are proximity to good restaurants, breweries, and historical sites. Don't really care about nightlife because I'm old.
Sounds like you want downtown. Could look at Isle of Palms or Folly Beach if you wanted to prioritize beach. Could look at Mount Pleasant for beach and/or shopping. But based on what you listed, seems like you want to pick a hotel downtown. I live 2 hours away so my perspective probably isn't like others who have come from across the country to vacation. North Charleston is industrial so prob avoid that.
Labor Day weekend - be on hurricane alert. Hopefully that won't mess with your dates. Likely to be extremely hot and humid unless you luck out with timely storms. Once in a while you'll catch a fall breeze that weekend.
Initially hotels but those seem fairly limited in the downtown area, or they're $500/night B&B's, so I've pivoted more toward airbnb.
stay somewhere on James Island. It's right over the bridge from downtown, close to folly, easy to get in/out of for the most part. Depending where on JI you're staying it's anywhere from 5-15min to get downtown to all the good restaurants/sites/etc. Once you get downtown you can walk everywhere, uber, or just get one of the rickshaw guys to take you. Lowtide Brewery is on Johns island which isn't far Charleston Fermentory in West Ashley isn't far Revelry, Edmund's Oast, Munkle, Tradesmen are all downtown and a fairly short uber ride.
lol that thread popped into my mind, but the kids are being left behind for this one. I'll only have myself to blame if I don't get laid, not the accommodations.
Played Charleston Muni the other day. You Charleston residents are lucky to have that course. It is fucking awesome. Beats all the Kiawah resort courses that are now like $300.00 to play.
Anyone else living in town interesting in getting a beer or three this summer? Still checking out new spots after moving last September, always looking for people to watch a game with. 31/M/downtown/6 inches (soft) Plz respond
Damn. It looked interesting and we have been thinking about trying it. Just wasn’t sure if it would be my style of place.
Yeah i was disappointed. i didn't like the cocktails or any of the dishes. didn't try the tasting menu, but i wasn't impressed with what we all got.
Popped up on my Snapchat memories. This was before I knew how abv worked and I got absolutely shit tanked. Two day hangover with the scaries included.
If walking your fat ass around some place doesn’t sound appealing why would you make a horse carry/pull your fat ass around? do you hate horses or something?
Eric The Viking do you know if either Outer Banks or Righteous Gemstones have been filming at the skate parks downtown this week?
Been here two nights, pink bellies and Halls for dinner so far. Eaten a ton of oysters elsewhere. Fat and happy so far Lovely city you’ve got here
The guy who owns coastal crust is awesome. They have a food truck in Greenville who marketing would have at the place I used to work a bunch.
Is the Tattooed Moose still open? Probably the only good thing Arkadin ever did was recommend this place and the duck club sandwich.
Not sure when you went, but it moved from the peninsula up to Park Circle in North Charleston a few years ago.
Ok yeah, it’s not in the same location but it’s still open. There’s a good smash burger place now in the old location.
Got a long break between wedding and reception. Need a lively, boozy fun brunch/lunch for a group on a Saturday. Between 12pm-4pm. Ceremony is beaten King/Broad, so prefer walking or a short uber up along king st I guess.
Was thinking trigger fish tempura if it’s on yhe menu. Slotted for 8:15 so we’re about to see seahorse bar next door is hella cunty
