And you have to put it on Mitch for lack of pocket presence and inability to read a defense. It’s a two fold problem IMO, 3 if you want to go down the GM road too....
pocket presence is learned over time.. especially coming from a 1 year starter.. We can disagree on reading a defense
It’s learned if you’re not getting the shit kicked out of you every time you drop back. Our line issues could ruin Mitch before he makes that step..
I could look back and find the article but Mitch himself said he had trouble reading what he’s seeing after a pick earlier in the year. He’s still not good at it IMO.
Why in the fuck would you want Shurmur as OC. He's trash. This times a million. Every statistical data point suggest Trubisky is not a good QB. Its time to bring in another QB or completely tear it down because going into 2020 with Mitch as the man will get everyone fired from Nagy to Pace. Play calling and scheme don't seem to be the issue. Most former players who post on social media and break down the all 22 films all say the same shit. Passing game wise the scheme is great. Running could be improved but the schemes are fine. The issue is Mitch. Every stat says he's the reason we suck.
He’s had more success as an OC than our current HC had as an OC And Mitch isn’t going anywhere, Pace doesn’t have the balls to pull the plug. Our best hope is we bring a QB guru like Shurmur in and sign someone to have a legit QB battle (they’ll bring someone in but it won’t be a legitimate battle).
IMHO the biggest need for this roster in the offseason... 1) QB 2) TE 3) WR 4) T 5) Edge 6) CB Spoiler: long breakdown QB Draft With the roster breakdown you can't select a rookie in round 2. You can't mortgage everything we have to move up to select a Joe Burrow. So Pace will need to look at the free agent market. FA Guys who are FA but not going anywhere: Brady Brees Rivers Prescott Winston Realistic Options with a some sort of upside: Mariota Bridgewater Bottom Line: Pace needs to sign Teddy or Marcus to compete with and probably beat out Mitch. TE Draft Hunter Bryant - Washington Brycen Hopkins - Purdue Colby Parkinson - Stanford Josiah Deguara - Cincinnati Albert Okwuegbuanam - Missouri FA Austin Hooper Hunter Henry Bottom Line: Both Hooper and Henry are prime targets that fit the pass catching role we desperately need in the offense. Henry has tremendous talent but is often injured not sure we want to go down that route given what we have with Burton. I don't see us parting ways with Burton and I don't think Pace given the cap situation is going to commit to big money via free agency and because of that we draft a tight end in the draft. Bryant is a stud if he test well he will be the 1st TE off the board. Both Bryant and Hopkins are fringe top 50 guys so if they have strong combine numbers you could see one of the two slide in where the Bears select. If not you can wait till later in the draft and take one of Parkinson, Deguara or Okwuefbuanam. WR Draft Justin Jefferson - LSU Brandon Aiyuk - ASU KJ Hamler - PSU Jalen Reagor - TCU Isiah Hodgins - Oregon State Tylan Wallace - Oklahoma State Tyler Johnson - Minnesota Denzel Mimms - Baylor Bryan Edwards - South Carolina FA Wont have the money for: AJ Green Amari Cooper Realistic Option: Emanuel Sanders Robby Anderson Devin Funchess Russell Shepard Bottom Line: If i'm pace the only sure fire WRs i'm counting on next season are Robinson and Miller. No one else on this roster is safe or can be counted on to produce. I think Gabriel is gone and need to find someone with speed. I think we need to bring in two wide outs this off season. In a perfect world you hope to bring in a Robby Anderson or Funchess to fill a role on the outside opposite of Robinson and then focus on a speedster in the draft. Guys like Aiyuk, Hamler and Reagor can all fly and all would fall in the top 50 range for prospects. This is one deep position and the Bears will likely find talent later in the draft. Its not a position where we may need to reach to fill a hole. Hopefully they don't swing and miss like they did with Ridley. Tackle Draft Austin Jackson - USC Lucas Niang - TCU Alex Leatherwood - Alabama Josh Jones - Houston Samuel Cosmi - Texas FA Jack Conklin Bottom Line: We already have some money tied up on the offensive line so it would be interesting what they do here. Conklin is probably not realistic. Austin Jackson is a really talented kid out of USC. I've seen him mocked a few different places to the Bears. Niang, Leatherwood are two other tackles who are top 100 talents that could be available. I think Chicago needs to invest early on a OT and will take one with one of the 2nd rounders they have. Edge Draft Kenny Willekes - MSU Carlos Basham - Wake Forest Alton Robinson - Syracuse Anfernee Jennings - Alabama Jonathon Garvin - Miami FA Fowler Jr Barrett Dupree Judon Bottom Line: The lack of pass rush from our edge guys not named Mack is scary. Floyd does have good games against the Packers and has shown very little outside of those matchups. Lynch when not lining up offside is nothing more than a body. Free Agency has some good edge players. Fowler and Barrett will command big dollars but you can bring in a Dupree and Judon to push or replace Floyd. The draft has a few good names for later outside the top 100. My favorite is Willekes from Michigan State. Not sure if he's lasting in the 140's. Robinson, Jennings are other later options to push Floyd but unlikely to replace him. DB Draft Shaun Wade - OSU Paulson Adebo - Stanford Bryce Hall - Virginia Jaylon Johnson - Utah Jeff Gladney - TCU FA James Bradberry - Carolina Bottom Line: I'll start this off by saying I believe Ha Ha will return on a longer term contract. He's played well this season is only 27 and I believe would could extend him and keep a really good safety combo together long term. We have a serious need at starting CB. Fuller isn't going anywhere but Prince is done. Not sure if he retire or we just part ways but either way you need to add a good piece to replace him. I like Bradberry again money may be an issue. I don't know if we find the answer via the draft given are other needs but a depth pick later would be wise. Mock Draft 43 - Austin Jackson - T - USC 50 - Hunter Bryant - TE - Washington 138 - Chase Claypool - WR - Notre Dame 145- Jordan Fuller - S - Ohio State 147 - Myles Bryant - CB - Washington 177- Jeff Thomas - WR - Miami 209 - Carter Coughlin - Edge - Minnesota FA Pickups QB - Marcus Mariota Edge - Shaq Barrett S - Ha Ha
Nagy isn't giving up the playcalling. Its not happening. Is Shurmur going to want to come on as OC in name only? I don't see it happening. There is no cutting bait on Mitch. He's here. The question is do you bring in legit competition. It's possible and I believe needed. If they don't Pace and this coaching staff is toast unless Mitch gets much much better.
I think Nagy may hand over play calling duties to a proven OC. Pace needs to sit him down and explain that they’ll both be out of work before the 2021 season if something doesn’t change. And I do disagree with your opinion that the playcalling isn’t a problem. You say that yes Nagy needs to run more, that’s a huge issue if you have a championship level defense. It’s also a huge issue when everyone sees that plying under center is helping your team and you go say stupid shit like “they didn’t bring me here for that”...dipshit they brought you here to win championships. Also I’d put Tackle #2 just under QB and slightly ahead of TE for no other reason that a strong line is so important in the NFL.
Pace is going to go all in on bad contracts and giving up future draft picks to compensate for Mitch being a shit QB. Its gonna fuck our long term future once Mitch shits the bed next season and the McCaskey family cleans house. I have a terrible feeling about this off-season
Hiestand didn't seem to be the issue. Long breaking down and having very little depth along the OL was probably the main issue. The unit played at an average level compared to the other units in the league. I think they played to the talent level they had. Such a weird move.
Bears front office leaking shit to the media... Throwing the fired coaches under the bus. Saying Mark Helfrich and Harry Hiestand were responsible for the run game planning each week.
Not shocked at play caller. I don't think its gonna change even with a OC hire but we shall see. Not firing the QB coach given Mitch still having awful mechanics at time and not learning how to read coverage's yet is beyond baffling.
Which is Heistands background if I’m not mistaken. But also seemed to be Montgomerys strong point. Seems like neither of those 2 mix with Nagys zone blocking scheme.
He’s was handed a awful roster top to bottom. He’s had his misses but largely done a good job as GM. Not sure what the quote he’s talking about is. Would like to see it
With Heistand gone next year our line is probably going to be trash unless we spend major money to upgrade it....which we don’t have.
Without giving it any thought bring in Shurmur and Callahan. Let Shurmur pick his TE coach since that’s how he got started.
I think the Bears will probably try and add a OL in this draft... OT or G with one of the first two picks. I think the unit can be just fine next season. I'll wait and see who they hire as OC/OL coach
Juan Castillo is the new o-line coach I guess, anyone know anything about him? https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nb...e=y&akdevice=androidphone&sslEnabled=true&
He’s from the Andy Reid tree so he’s gonna be able to fit in and understand scheme wise what Nagy wants to do. He’s coached some good Olines for the eagles in years past. Players seem to like him.
Adam Jahns predicted this yesterday. History with Reid and Nagy. Background of run game coordinator with the Eagles, Ravens, and Bills so it makes sense. Jahns also predicted Shurmur so we’ll see.
Hopefully Shurmur QB molding really is as hyped. Because if we go into next season with Mitch and Alex Smith as the QBs we really probably only have Mitch
I saw DaBearsBlog tweet that. I’d be fine with that but don’t see it happening. Eric the Enemy is probably the #1 HC option in the market now and Kafka has been told he’s the Chiefs OC next year. Maybe he has a better relationship with Nagy than Reid
So here’s why we have a new OL coach: https://www.baltimoreravens.com/video/inside-the-game-with-juan-castillo-13228767 Nagy will only call zone (except the first drive of the third quarter AKA an actual TD drive) and Heistad believed in a power blocking scheme. I still would of went with Callahan (another zone blocking coach) but it seems like Nagy isn’t the type to have someone else in the coaching room that would call him out.
“According to Football Outsiders, the Bears ranked 20th in adjusted sack rate and 29th in adjusted line yards, a metric used to give responsibility to the offensive line on run plays based on down, distance, situation and opponent.”
I think the water is hot and he understands it. Going with people who all learned the game from the same mentor. It’s not a bad thing that he understands that those coaches don’t vibe with his style and he’s moving on.
Which is fine with me. Stink almost had an aneurysm trying to break down our zone blocking in that last game (what he knows running from Denver). How many replays did he pout out that our OL was doing exactly opposite of what they should be?
I think it’ll continue to be trash until they upgrade it. Can’t make chicken salad out of chicken shit...
They have a ton invested in it. Daniels, Whitehair are top 100 picks Iirc. LT just got a big extension. They had big money in Long that will come off the books. I think drafting a G or T to add to this group along with a coach who’s gonna teach the technique needed could bring this unit production up big time.
correct, and he has this offseason to get it right or hope his bet pays off in Mitch. Either way he will lose his job based on the QB. And I do believe that’s fair. I’m just pointing out he’s definitely brought the floor up on the talent level in that building in a substantial way.
I think they fucked up with the Leno, Massie contracts but I’m with you on trying to upgrade a few spots this offseason and hoping we get back to 2018 level of play.
Raising the floor is an easy thing to do when the previous GM had no idea what he was doing. Emery got an F for his job.
Besides the guys on rookie contracts, our OL is lookin real overpaid. We don't have many contracts that are good values. Pace has mortgaged the future to win now with a qb on a rookie deal, which is not looking at all likely. Because of that, he'll be remembered as a GM who put us in another hole.
