so Jeanty wasn’t available at 10. At 39 did people want RJ Harvey because he was the next RB to go after Henderson at 38. Harvey went at 60. But then people would be complaining we didn’t use a high pick on an OL
Had 4 picks in the 1st 2 rds and drafted 2 lineman, can’t bitch about that. RB’s are a dime a dozen so there’s really not much difference there.
Grading Bears' Draft (first 4 rounds) Colston Loveland B+ He's probably not who fans (or the FO) wanted, but it just shook out that all 7 of the guys fans wanted went 2-9. Loveland is a huge upgrade over Kmet and he's going to be a great Bear IMO. The grade is solely because we missed out on all the guys we wanted, not because Loveland was a bad pick for who was available, which is no fault of Poles'. Luther Burden A- Exciting player, WR3 was definitely a void that needed to be addressed in this draft, and Burden does just that. Playmaker with high YAC potential seems like a great fit for Ben Johnson and Caleb. Love the player and the fit. The minus is because I think there were more impactful players available, notably on the DL. Right guy, maybe wrong time. I think WR3 would have been better off addressed later in the draft as we had more pressing needs. I'm a fan of BPA though so it still gets the lofty grade. Trade+Ozzy Trapillo C-/D+ We trade down and TJ Sanders, Alfred Collins, Donovan Ezeiruakauuauau, JT Tuimoloau, Aireontae Ersery, Nic Scourton, Oluwafemi Oladejo, and Anthony Belton are all drafted between those picks. Instead we draft a right tackle with short arms that isn't likely to be a huge factor this upcoming season. Hard to imagine that we came out of 39+41 with a WR3 and a backup RT, but that is indeed the case. He has great size and looks really athletic for that size, but he seems like he needs a lot of work run blocking. Could be good for us in 2026 and moving forward, but this is disappointing heading into 2025 imo. The BC DE would be an immediate impact player imo. Shemar Turner B We went from having major holes on the interior to maybe having a bit of overcrowding at the position. I think Turner can be a good player, but we needed an edge much more than a tackle at this point after signing Grady Jarrett. Plus Turner obviously has discipline issues considering all the personal fouls and dick punches. Reuben Hyppolite B+ Watching through some of the 2023 Maryland-OSU game, there's a lot to like about the kid. He's quick, seems to have really good instincts, and closes on the ball well. But he's undersized and he kinda tackles with his arms instead of truly wrapping up. With Edmunds looking like a candidate to get cut after the season, we'll need a replacement ready to go. He's not going to be a star but he could be serviceable.
My only critique is people saying Burden is WR3. Teams primarily run from 3 WR sets. Hes replacing Keenan Allen who was second in targets and yards and first in touchdowns. If the bears drafted an edge you wouldn’t complain they drafted a DE3, which is exactly what a second round pick would be next year.
Watched the press conference from Johnson and Poles and they were asked about the RBs and missing the flow of the draft and Poles seemed to indicate they weren’t willing to trade up and pay with future capital just to fill the need at RB. But you could see Johnson was a bit frustrated about it. Swift should do well in this scheme. Johnson I’m not so sure on but it does feel like a lot will be asked of him, very much a make of break year. Don’t think the draft pick has much upside either. RB room could look completely different next year. Same goes with LB and S.
Hes the anti Swift. Led NCAA is missed tackles past 2 years. IIRC Swift had 2 broken tackles all year last year.
Burden is a freak. Living here I’m forced to watching every Mizzou game. If he could come out last year he wasn’t making it past pick 20. He can easily house any end around or bubble. Great return man as well. I was texting with OZ when GB picked Golden, told him I liked Golden but I would have chosen LB3. Golden ran a 4.3 and LB3 a 4.4 but he’s always the fastest player in the field when he plays. Hes got such a long stride like Moss it doesn’t look like he’s moving fast but no one can ever catch him.
nobody is under the impression that Swift is a long term fit here in Chicago. They clearly were targeting his replacement in this draft. For a single season he should be no worse than what he was last year. I expect that room to be completely turned over next offseason.
Goldens time was a glitch. He ran in the 4.4s. It’s why he didn’t do a second run and why he didn’t run at his proday. Kid is good but that number 4.29 isn’t legit. GPS data and game speed do favor LB3
The more I look at this draft, holy shit did Poles really shit the bed. I’m not going to knock Loveland at 10 and he was my TE1 so whatever but it’s a reach. Burden is a fantastic pick and the corner late was also really good. The rest of this draft is hot ass. Not getting one of those tier 2 or 3 RBs, trading out of spots that could’ve gotten you better defenders than you selected on the defensive line. Hopefully some of those dudes outperform my expectations but I’m not a fan of this draft
I'll wait a few days since I don't want to be reactionary, but I'd agree it's definitely questionable. With our top needs being OL/DL it was always going to be BPA since those positions were thin. Either we move up and lose draft capital or take guys that might not be great fits. TE / WR were luxury needs but they DO fill a scheme need. Not a fan of the trade down.
Nobody was clamoring for Andrew Booth. People where questioning why take a nickel corner over larger needs like OL
Idk man… that seems rather niche but cool just a spin off this of sorts based on my board Value 1) Browns 2) Tampa 3) Bills 4) Eagles 5) Seahawks Talent 1) Browns 2) Pats 3) Seahawks 4) Eagles 5) Bills NFC North rankings Talent 1) Bears 2) Packers 3) Lions 4) Vikings Value 1) Packers 2) Lions 3) Vikings 4) Bears * Vikings did a fantastic job with UDFA
I was listening, he didn’t say they were going to start Tripilo. There has been a growing narrative, especially from some noted dumbasses at that station, they they’re going to move Wright to LT and I think he was trying to shut that down. He wasn’t saying much of anything during the 20 minute hit though. It was a lot of generalities. People are assuming Ozzy will start because he’s a second round pick but I don’t think that’s a safe assumption. This man loves Braxton jones so much.
They don’t love him that much or they wouldn’t have taken a tackle in the second round (and a tackle in the third last year). Braxton might not even be ready for the start of training camp
Well he’s also in a contract year so you have to plan beyond him. I know he’s injured, but they’re going to cross that bridge when they come to it. My point more so is that they’re not declaring anyone a starter right now. There will be a competition.
Daniel Jeremiah and Gregg Rosenthal said on their latest episode that the Browns drafting Sampson after Judkins was because Nick Chubb is done one Cleveland, and that the buzz they’ve been hearing around the league is Chubb will end up in Chicago.
Maybe if you were choosing him over another available talented free agent. But just not wanting to add him to what you have doesn’t make sense. He’s low risk, high reward and is a solid locker room guy. You’re not going to invest in him long-term or a ton of money. Seems silly to turn that away just because he has an injury history.
the bears don’t have a lot of cap space left. I’d rather make sure we have a real strong safety to step in after brisker inevitably kills himself in week 3 this year
Ozzy going to LT makes a ton of sense. You don’t know if Jones is going to be healthy by training camp, then you have a ramp up process. Taking him in the second was a clear indication that the franchise wasn’t sure on Jones health and what he looks like when he gets going. Ben is also on record as saying Jones is light in the ass and needed to bulk up so he clearly wasn’t the biggest fan. Speaking of not being the biggest fan I think the draft will also put a huge spotlight on DJ Moore. I could see him being traded next offseason if he wants to continue to sulk and give 50% effort when the play isn’t designed for him. Burden being drafted is his replacement if Moore doesn’t get his shit together. No block No Rock was a direct shot at Moore from Johnson Stevenson I already spoke about, his replacement was drafted as well if he continues to struggle. Chubb when healthy is a fantastic back. He would be that power back to complement Swift this year. I just don’t see it in Johnson and this gives us coverage. I wouldn’t imagine a Chubb contract would be more than a one year deal. And as I mentioned a few times I fully expect that RB room to be completely overhauled next offseason. LB is another spot I think we see get an overhaul. TJ probably has 2 years and I think Edmonds is done. Talk already that they are moving TJ inside and Edmonds might be moved outside in attempt to use him more as a pass rusher.
That’s only a concern is you’re trying to sign top-of-the-market guys. Other than that it’s a made up concept. There’s enough workarounds and wiggle room that they could easily do both.
My thought process is From what I can tell they have $11 mil in space and that’s without signing any of their rookies. I’m not spending 50% of that on a running back with one leg. Chubb averaged 3.3 yards per rush last year.
Cleveland’s offensive line finished the year ranked 29th in the league in run blocking, and Chubb only played eight games. It’s low-risk and high-reward. It’ll probably be an incentive-heavy deal. If he doesn’t produce or gets hurt then so what. But he could potentially return to form and be a catalyst for the offense. Plus, it gives Ben Johnson his Sonic and Knuckles combo. And he’s definitely the type of character guy and quality pro that I’d want around an offense full of young players.
This team doesn’t have enough pass rush… not sure the gets on the market move the needle much. Maybe the trade market will find them a player during the season. If we’re looking to make one final move I would put a rush end above all. Shame we had studs on the board to fill that and we took a tight end.
With the extensions they’ve signed and the upcoming Thuney extension there are plenty of contracts to open cap space. If they feel good about Chubb or an Edge you give them a 2 year deal with the second year having a clear off ramp.
