As far as Nagy v Kafka from people I’ve talked to around town. He’s not an offensive coordinator (neither was Nagy actually, just in title), he’s never called plays (Nagy called what? 2.5 games and was ripped for them). Nagy claimed he was part of Mahomes development and is the reason Alex Smith stepped it up so much his final year. That’s been proven to be BS. Smith changed and the offense changed that year because 1) they were already tailoring it to Mahomes before he was starting and 2) they got burners in the lineup like Hill who were constantly open deep. Kafka has been right next to Mahomes since the second they drafted him. Clearly Reid is the #1 factor but I’ve heard multiple Chiefs people say Kafka was/is Pat’s #1 guy.
I think it’s a good sign that no coach was hired. Now if we see more interviews that would be very nice.
Wouldnt shock me if a coach is hired today. There’s no reason to think it won’t be one of those three guys based off of what was reported yesterday
Ballard was on the Chiefs staff with Poles and he’s introduced the two quite a while ago. Pretty so/so on this until I hear about the offensive staff.
I need a Colts fan to tell me how to feel. Statistically they've had a good defense but rely a lot on turnovers and have blown a TON of leads. Our defense is aging and I'm more concerned about who will revamp our offense.
The Adams did a pod with an Indy guy that went pretty deep on Eberflus a couple weeks ago. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podca...he-chicago-bears/id1027584309?i=1000547919262
A positive to this is Joe Brady is an Athletes first coach... I'll now step out and pray on this being the hire.
Ambivalent. He did some good things in Indy but his defenses were often times uneven and relied HEAVILY (to a fault) on forcing turnovers to offset the big plays/total breakdowns they'd often allow. His players always seemed to really like and respect him which is a positive. This isn't anything groundbreaking or original but I'd wait to see what sort of staff he puts together especially on the offensive side.
The Bills and Charges hired defensive coaches. Belichick is a defensive coach. Pete Carrol is a defensive coach. Tomlin is a defensive coach. Harbaugh is a special teams coach. The idea that you have to be an offensive wizards to develop a QB just isn’t true.
My hope is that they hire one good QB developer and let everyone else get out of the way instead of having a committee of HC/OC/QBC like the last regime. That can often hold QBs back more than anything
My biggest worry about defensive coaches is do they understand the modern NFL. Never punt inside the opponents 45, don’t kick field goals on 4th and short between the 30 and 40 yard line, etc. don’t default to “I trust my defense” go win games
I think that’s a valid point game management is something you’re taking a complete flyer on by not hiring a seasoned HC
Idk anything about the new GM, he could be the greatest GM in history for all I know But I am a little nervous about hiring a (young) personnel guy from KC bc he hasn’t necessarily been around rebuilds and the number of strategies and tactics needed to accomplish that. I would prefer a GM with more experience in the competitive cycles of the NFL and some wisdom of that. The risks of this hire are just like hiring someone out of New England, Alabama etc
Not to mention we just had an offensive coach we were terrified would get more time with Fields and ruin him.
he’s been with the chiefs since 2009. The chiefs aren’t the patriots, they haven’t been dominating for the last 13 years
Id add that Poles worked under Pioli, Dorsey, and Veach. All guys you’d be super happy if the Bears hired.
The one reason to hire an offensive head coach is that if you are relying on a star OC to develop the QB/offense, a successful outcome means that OC will leave to be a head coach.
my theory is every fanbase hates their defense unless they have an absolutely elite defense. We saw it in this town with Lovie
I think it's the nature of coaching football in an era where everyone watches every game looking for reasons to think you suck. When you're in a place for longer than a year or two, the bad stuff just piles on top of other bad memories in ways the good things don't. It's like you're always playing with a deficit and trying to come back from it because people have already gotten tired of you and are looking for examples that validate their opinions. You can play great 15 weeks, but 2 bad weeks are thrown on the pile of the 3 bad weeks from last year and the 4 from the year before that, which means you suck. It's how coaches and quarterbacks are covered, and why the turnover for both if you aren't one of the established elite continues to increase.
Thinking I’d rather have Quinn than Eberflus just because of the HC clout that’s comes with hiring coordinators. Quinn could probably pull in some better talent than Everflus IMO. I’d be ecstatic with Brady and Zimmer but I don’t see it happening
I agree and was why I liked Quinn better but then learned he’s super conservative (not politics) and that soured me on him
Does Eberflus cover 2 use the same type of DTs like Lovies? (Faster explosive type). If so can we get anything of value for Goldman?
