With how the schedule has set up there's no way we can be sellers if we come out of this month atop the division. The Brewers have been playing nothing but the worst of the MLB the last two weeks and haven't been able to take the lead of the division. Meanwhile we've had to face the best teams in the NL. If we come out of June winning that series against Milwaukee to finish off the month we'll definitely have to start trying to add a starting pitcher.
This isn't even a cubs thing... there are a ton of players testing the market. Agents want the bidding war. Unless the team is willing to go yolo guys aren't signing now.
Cubs have the 2nd easiest schedule moving forward. Just get out of June close and get a couple starters and this team has a shot. The bullpen is lights out and built for the playoffs. Just need 3 arms who can give us 6 innings
Our starters are awful right now. You don't need to land two Berrios type starters. But someone like Lester would be very helpful. A guy who can navigate 6 innings and keep his team in games. And that type of guy won't require much when it comes to prospects.
It will still cost a ton and our hitters aren't good enough to think all we're lacking is a couple starters
We can just agree to disagree on price points. Cubs can make small moves to the staff and land a hitter without giving up the farm. They have done it numerous times in the last 6 years. They got Nick Castellanos for two middling prospects (not ranked in the top 100 MLB prospects) and he had a massive impact on the team. Anyways this team isn't perfect but it's earned its shot at making a run. Indications from ownership is they will spend money if needed and Hoyer has said it looks like they will be buying. I'm not going to bitch about the flaws i'm going to enjoy this run because this team and franchise could look drastically different come 2022 ..
What have they shown you in the last two years that gives you any indication they’re willing to spend? They low balled Anthony Rizzo who is going to go down as a Cubs legend, they let Lester walk when they could’ve kept him for fairly cheap, and they didn’t sign a single impactful free agent. KB is a goner, Javy probably is as well.
Sort of torn, if the Cubs go up to Milwaukee and get swept, they have to become sellers at that point right? 6 games back on July 1. Feel like you could retool quickly if you just traded the bullpen guys alone.
I would also say the cubs have been competitive even though they are losing. I'm not sure this team will sell unless the wheels fall off in early July.
Remember when we let Schwarber walk instead of paying him $8-$9 mil in arbitration? Good move you idiots.
For the better. Hopefully they make some moves and actually get fair value in return unlike the Darvish trade.
I don't see us getting a massive return for anyone on this roster. I would imagine Kimbrel would get the best return.
bryant would get a big return and I bet Chaffin could get a pretty good prospect. Bryant isnt MVP Bryant but he’ll almost certainly be one of the best players on the market.
I agree we are not going to get massive returns but I think we can at least replenish the system if they play their cards right, plus maybe we can unload some salaries and prepare for the upcoming classes.
Yeah its all about getting more prospects for the farm and load up for a run a few years down the road. I don't see a world where we bring a competitive team back via massive FA spending next year.
That's probably the last we see of Jake... at least as a starter. Like to see Steel get some starts. Saw a report that they are extending him during his rehab assignment in the minors
Decided to rush out to the game tonight. No clue how long we have to see some of these guys in Cubs uniforms. It was good while it lasted.
Jake is definitely the athlete that thinks he’s still got it in him when everyone else around him knows he’s washed. I think some of the media last night were fucking dicks in the way the frames questions to Jake. But his response to them made me feel awful for him. Wish him and the rest of the core left on this roster nothing but the best. They provided me with something generations in my family not got to see. In a few weeks this roster will be set on fire and in 2022 we’re not likely to be very good. Hopefully 2023 we see have the start of the next upswing if all goes well. Back to following the amazing dudes on Twitter who cover our minor league system.
Brennen Davis 2 homers in the futures game, today. Looking forward to this becoming a minor league centric thread soon.
I think it makes sense with what their timeline to compete seems to be. And he was clearly the top lefty in the draft who projects be a solid mid rotation starter with plus command that can move through the minors quickly. Plus some scouts think he can get his fastball to sit more in the mid 90s instead of low 90s like it does now. And if we can get that he could be a #2 starter.
I see him as a 5 starter at best. Yeah, he's got command, but I don't see him as having a ceiling as much more than he is right now.
