It worked out there but I think Willie Harris’s time as the third base coach needs to be done after this year. Far too many sends where the guy would be out by 10+ feet if defense wasn’t incompetent
What a fucking waste. He shouldn’t be on this roster next year. That’s a lot of money that could’ve been spent on the pen or for an upgrade in the lineup.
I can’t imagine he will be. I still can’t believe we thought giving him $16.5 million over taking a flyer on Flaherty was a good idea.
To be fair Kyle had a legitimately good year last year, but they shouldn’t have allowed him to be on the team all of this year. It clearly wasn’t working and even after he pivoted to high curveball usage, he was never consistent enough to be relied upon
https://www.milb.com/player/jonathon-long-675085#stats-block A name to start keeping an eye on. Our 9th round pick last year, got promoted to Tennessee middle of July and has been phenomenal. OPS over 1000 at AA and has a higher walk rate than k rate.
Would have expected to see Shaw or Cassie first, but Alcantara is already in the 40, so no 40 man moves were needed.
I've never cared less about the Cubs Hopefully that changes next year, but there's nothing less interesting than a mediocre team and a coach who is dead inside
We're back to where we were most of our entire lives outside of a 4-5 year period. Once every 5-8 years everything will go right and they'll make the playoffs and then you just cross your fingers and hope the randomness of the playoffs breaks your way. Didn't work for 100 years but maybe this time it'll be different.
more than a few people looking foolish for suggesting this team was anything other than exceedingly average (at best) let alone anything close to a threat to do anything in the postseason 2025 will be more of the same as ownership & FO sit on their hands and bemoan the rising costs of the game while serious franchises with non-joke owners continue to add pieces and strengthen their roster
Silver lining - all of the Ricketts not named Laura are complete and utter garbage that should be stoned to death as it makes it that much easier to no longer give even the first fuck about this joke of a franchise
I thought this team could contend for the division or wild card this season. They got off to a nice start but those middle months of the season got derailed and when the front office needed to make a move early they did not. Instead they held the line and this season is highly disappointing to all of us. I know everyone is always looking at ownership but at what point do we say Hoyer isn’t the answer. He’s clearly gun shy on being aggressive in the free agency market and trade market. Where Theo may have been over aggressive it’s clear Hoyer is maybe too much in the opposite direction. This team needs a superstar bat… one way or the other it has to add one to this lineup this offseason.
Ownership allowed him to make a coaching change and made him the highest paid coach by a long distance. I think this is probably the last offseason for Hoyer. I can’t see him continuing on. The fanbase is beyond frustrated at this point
It all comes down to ownership. Hoyer has marching orders and can't just do whatever he wants with money. That said, Hoyer will be the fall guy.
I don’t think hoyer is getting fired this season. There will be stern language from ownership about how the rebuild needs to be over, but like was said above, ricketts is happy hoyer is incredibly risk averse. They need to acquire an elite bat in the offseason in some manner. I don't expect them to come close to signing Soto, and there’s not a ton of other slug options as free agents. They need to start getting very aggressive through trades to find some slug.
Dont necessarily disagree with your overall point but there's a big difference between committing to superstar player contract and a highest paid coach contract. A hundreds of millions of dollars difference.
Sure, but you also had him singular focus on bringing Beli in and then paying Hendricks 18m and Neris 9m. Hoyer's allocation of funds is also terrible.
I was watching the 2016 playoffs last night and I started getting depressed. It's starting to look like sports footage from an older time. Hard to believe it was 8 years ago now.
Soto’s not leaving New York according to pretty much every MLB insider so that’s not remotely surprising and we’ve been linked to Fried not Burnes for pitcher we’re likely to sign so that isn’t really stunning either. Fried’s peripherals are better than Burnes and he’s expected to come at a lower cost so I can’t say I’m really upset we seem to be targeting him instead of Burnes.
Getting pissed at the Cubs not going after someone who’s never going to consider coming is nuts. It’s like the Otani stuff last year. He was always going to the dodgers and never leaving California. Fried is a nice pickup for the rotation if we can make it work. A catcher, real money invested into the pen and a big bat. I saw some talk of kicking the trade market for a bat like Rooker (As). We need slug in the lineup.
Promise this is not a spin zone, I have zero interest in Corbin burnes on a long term contract Co-sign fried would be preferable
His people are upset that we seem to plan for him to be primarily a DH. Apparently his agent has openly said that if Seiya knew this would happen he would’ve signed elsewhere.
