Again not defending them but moving bellinger had nothing to do with roki. He’ll get like less than 10M a year. They don’t seem to be spending that money regardless (the Colin Rea signing is less than inspiring), but it wasn’t about Roki
how I envy fans of teams that aren’t run as though it’s some private equity investment to maximize profits above all us
Also this, only team to sign two top fifteen international prospects. https://www.cubsinsider.com/2025/01...p-15-international-free-agents-in-2025-class/
Probably a good move by tuckers side knowing the cubs would want to settle before cubs con starts tomorrow. If I recall correctly he was projected around 15.5M this year so he got himself an extra mil.
Do we know how much they have left? Seems like they were trying to position themselves to be able to trade money to the dodgers or padres for a prospect
Probably not much. Cabada and De La Cruz combined for $3.8 million, Juan Tomas got another $1.1 million. That’s $4.9 of our $6.26 we had available and then we’ve signed four others too but those amounts haven’t been announced yet.
anytime you can get a 36 year old reliever with declining velocity for $14 mil a season you have to do it
They will not go over the tax for a 2nd year. They want to make enough space to be able to add trade assets mid year and not have what happened last year where we went into the tax over like 5k
I think that trade is happening unfortunately. So they spent most of the bellinger money on pressly, rea, thielbar and berti OOF
Also can you cut a rule five pick before the season starts because why the fuck is gage workman taking up a roster spot? Jed is so frustrating
843 OPS last year in AAA. He's 25 and has positional versatility. Very real chance he makes the opening day roster.
Rule 5 picks are required to make the 26 man roster (unless he can be cut). If he’s in the org then he’ll be on the opening day roster
I'm aware. Just saying we had Masterboner on the roster the last two years. Wouldn't be shocked if he makes the 26 man.
I actually like the thought of adding Pressly. Apparently Bregman wants to go to Chicago or New York but we've only offered 3 years and he wants 5? Just give him 4 years 100 mil and get it done
Apparently Zips says he’s worth five for $100 million and they say the Cubs internal valuation system is pretty correlated to Zips. If Houston’s offer of 6 years for $146 million is still on the table I can’t see him taking something significantly lower.
Smart of the cubs to help the Astros free up 14M so they can front load that deal if they want to. Jed is such a cuck
Yeah, it’s a moronic move if they’re serious about Bregman. My bet is they weren’t actually and just put that out there to get Astros to take a worse offer on Pressly.
Objectively we will probably be a bit better this year and should be the favorites to win the central. But this is just another move showing how cheap ownership is because Astros are taking on some of the salary.
Ricketts was quoted saying they try to break even on baseball operations each year and the whole fanbase has been hounding him for the last month about it.
Pretty much... Said they have a budget and they plan to go to the breaking even point. Going over that figure will be dependent to on field performance aka they probably need to be leading the division and playoff contenders. I think that's bullshit... I don't expect to spend like the Dodgers, Mets, Yankees. But we should be spending with the Phillies and those teams. Right now were in a third tier and I think its bullshit. Bregman should 100% be signed and a Cub. Makes no sense to not make that happen.
PECOTA projects us to have the third best record in baseball and the second highest odds of any team to win their division behind the Dodgers. https://www.baseballprospectus.com/standings/
Granted I've been out of the gambling/sabremetric game for 15 years now, but pecota was considered outdated way back then, and I don't believe Silver has updated it since as he's moved on.
I don’t think Silver is involved with them at all anymore. They got the division right last year, picking Milwaukee to win it. And Zips and them are pretty agreeable this year that the Cubs are the favorite going into the season. Probably even more so now for the Cubs on Zips with the Pressly trade.
I trusted PECOTA last year on a huge over bet on the A's that was easy. Hoping the same for the Cubs and white sox this year
PECOTA and ZIPS haven't been kind to us in the last few years... So I take this as a promising sign... Go fucking sign Bregman you cheap bastards.
