People who actually follow baseball at the draft level don’t hate the pick and they sure as suck couldn't be posting about era in college as why you wouldn’t draft him. This is an embarrassing take… but you co-signing it isn’t shocking.
Cubs went under slot at 7… on a guy that projects to be a Dylan Cease type prospect. And with the next pick they took another SP prospect that was ranked inside the top 20 for this draft. Seems like a great combo… risky, but if they think they can develop arms now (and we are seeing some proof of it) I’m not going to be upset at what they did last night.
late risers whose stock jumps based off of a 2 game sample size, what could go wrong? Everyone loves every pick. He’s a high upside player but a high risk as well. If we’re tanking to get premium talent maybe don’t gamble with the pick. I get the MLB draft isn’t exactly like other drafts but when you have a chance to draft a consensus top 7 player in the draft you don’t go for a guy that people thought would go in the 2nd round in May.
Because the MLB draft is so different from every other sport I believe you need to take a larger picture approach I just laid out above how the combo of the two picks seems to a great move. Slot money plays a factor in the draft. Having highly emotional reactions to a mlb draft seems odd to me. Kaplan is a clown. The TJ surgery is a valid criticism of the pick. As is looking at his early season struggles and thinking that’s who he is as a prospect and the bulk of the data agrees with that. But him improving as the season went along and then dominating at the highest level to close is a great sign. His stuff is nasty and that’s hard to teach.. touching 98 and sitting at 96 is top of the rotation stuff. Spare me the talk on ERA. Fuck Kaplan
I'm not of fan at drafting pitchers that high in general. I'm guessing they had a pre draft deal done and probably didn't expect Lee and Parada to fall like they did.
Week to 10 days. Final homestand ends July 25th. I could see the deals for Wilson and most of the Cubs happening after that.
He's turning into a very fun player to watch and also a very good player period and one that will likely be part of this core moving forward.
I have nothing to do tonight so I thought about heading out to the game. Tickets are $50. Not paying that for this team.
The most interesting thing for him next year is what position does he play. He’s been open that 3rd is where he’s most comfortable. I’ve seen some float the possibility of him at third and Wisdom at first. But frankly I’m hoping we sign someone for first this off-season as that position is a black hole in our lineup right now.
This is encouraging. Also Alexander Canario is just raking in AA this month. Over .1300 OPS for the month with a walk rate higher than his k rate. That Bryant trade might end up being the best of last year’s deadline trades.
Seems like they figured out the development side of the minors. They also will have this draft class + international class + all the prospects from this sell off and another high draft pick / class along with international market. Basically if they nailed the scouting and development we’re going to have a fantastic farm system.
Will we get a decent haul for Contreras? I know he’s a 2 month rental but he should still bring a decent return I’d think.
Fangraphs already has us 5th in the league. Realistically, as long as we don’t sit on our hands this off-season we should be competing for at least the wild card next year.
I would guess a lower top ten prospect for our system, unless we trade with someone like San Diego and take on Hosmers contract. Then we could get someone like Robert Hassell who would be the top guy in our system.
I guess it depends on how much they sell off. Steele and Thompson seem like they should be locks for the rotation. For now you slot them in at 3 and 4. Kyle is probably the vet 5th starter. If they move Stroman we’re in need of two arms at the top. If not we need a legit ace. We also have Killian who had a very promising last start who could flirt with a rotation role next year. Do we trade Happ do we move Wisdom. They both seem like legit bats and maybe won’t have any higher trade value. That would mean way more holes to fill next year. I think a few bats have a chance next year to play. But you need some proven stars. Especially at SS so you can move Horner to 2B.
Made Nwogu Not sure who is going to pitch but... Devers, Espinoza, Franklin, Palencia are arms to keep an eye out for as well. South Bend is loaded with talent. Ed Howard is also on that team but hurt.
We need a major upgrade at first next year. The only teams with less production from first this year are Detroit, Boston, and Pittsburgh. Hopefully that’s Mervis but I’m going to be upset if we don’t upgrade there.
I really think we'll spend some money this off season. Idk who is available as far as first basemen go though
I don’t think it matters. Either put him at third, move Hoerner to 2nd, Wisdom to 1st, and sign one of the big shortstops. Or put him at second and sign someone like Bell or Mancini. Not a huge upgrade but allows us to spend quite a bit on pitching.
4 outs on the bases, I like how aggressive we’ve been this year but that’s too many outs in one game.
I understand not resigning Contreras if it’s true he wants Realmuto money. It sucks but it’s understandable to direct that money into positions that don’t age as poorly.
Passan has an article this morning where he mentions that everyone wants Happ and that he’s hearing we will likely move him. That’s surprising but I guess it means we could get quite a haul between Contreras and him. Said some teams were inquiring about getting Happ, Contreras, and Robertson as a package deal.
I doubt we get a haul for either. I was listening to some national guy on the score he said Robertson was the biggest trade chip and would likely get a player in the back end of the top 100. Can’t do worse than what we got for kimbrel
If we package them together we could get a decent haul, Robertson has what 2 years left on contract? I’m not saying we could get some organizations top 2-3 prospects but if you find the right desperate team you could get a top guy and maybe a few guys to take flyers on. Either way trade them away and let’s rebuild this thing.
Unless someone is giving you a top 20 prospect in MLB as part of the package for this trio I do no way you combine them in a single deal. I rather get multiple bullets in individual deals. This front office crushed the deadline deals last year. I’m not overly concerned about reports of meh possible returns.
If Happ could be moving would they entertain Stroman as well? Killian, Thompson, Steele, Hendricks and sign a ace isn’t a bad rotation for next year.
deGrom would be the pipe dream… I wouldn’t mind signing Rodon or Noah but not with the idea they would lead the rotation. Both have injury concerns, I guess deGrom also has some questions. I don’t want them to trade Stroman. I think he’s a quality #2/3 on a playoff rotation. Either way adding an arm of high quality should be a priority with or without a trade of Stroman. Trade market could also be in play if we look competitive and the age/control make sense for this teams future.
Your obsession with this is weird. Wilson is a great dude, so was Rizzo and Bryant and others who got shipped out. It sucks to see the good bye hugs and the reaction of the clubhouse. But the franchise made the call last year that the 2016 core was maxed out and a rebuild was in order. It’s time to move on because your turning into the old man yelling at clouds.
the pipe dream is signing a 35 year old pitcher that has thrown 150 total innings the last 3 seasons?
