Not trying to sandbag. Haven’t done that once during this. I’ve been UCLA fan/student/alumnus basically all my life so forgive if my experience has jaded me. I’ll believe it when he is signed and introduced as our new coach.
It is pretty embarrassing if he was your top choice. UCLA hasn't been to a BCS level bowl since 1998, they are the 8th most popular show in town and always underachieve. Florida is a top 5 job in the country, I really dont get how he is going to UCLA over UF.
Because UF shits all over UCLA in terms of football prowess. It's just a fact. But I honestly think they will be better off with Frost. It's a great hire for UCLA
UCLA can be a very very good job, sure Florida is a bit better but if chip has success the thing will take off. And living in Cali versus Florida when you are already a millionnaire is a no brainer.
UCLA of the past yeah. If we make an effort to change that culture then I don’t see why it is embarrassing especially when it might have been a personal preference for him to come back to the pac12.
What? UF touts themselves as a top 5 job and they just lost a coach to an absolute joke of a football program. I thought you were at peace with the reality of what UCLA football is? Why so sensitive all of the sudden? I was actually flaming UF, not you, but you can get it too
What’s the top 10 rankings for most popular show in town and top college football coaching jobs? Curious to the former and disagree to the latter.
They’re not a joke, they get top 20 classes, compete for conference championships regularly. They just haven’t made the hurdle to the upper echelon, yet. Chip could get them there.
That might be a big of a change and effort level vs a school thay is full committed. I'm not doubting UCLA can be good. But UF is ready to hit the ground running.
What are 5 better jobs? UF is in the best conference, best recruiting state, has 3 national titles since 1996, great stadium and facilities ( at least I think), t a passionate fanbase and the resources to put money into the program. Best Jobs IMO 1. Bama 2. tOSU 3. UF 4. USC 5. Im open for suggestions here( Georgia, Texas, Notre Dame, Michigan, FSU are school that come to mind)
Florida at 3 is ridiculous Texas, FSU and Oklahoma are better jobs than Florida. Florida is in the same tier as LSU, Georgia, notre dame, etc
The scrutiny at UCLA is less, so Chip Kelly can coach and otherwise fly under the radar. Florida is a more prolific program, but there’s a lot more to being the Florida coach and I can understand if a coach wouldn’t want to deal with that.
The swamp is a shithole, fwiw. But yeah Alabama Ohio State Texas Southern Cal Then there’s the group of Florida State, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Clemson, Oklahoma, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State. I wouldn’t put them at the top of that group, currently.
And coaching is so much about getting the right fit. Look at rhule, he might’ve ruined his career going to Baylor. Chip probably knows he could not deal with Florida.
We just built a 65-75 million dollar football facility funded by private donors. Just spent 12 million on a buyout funded by boosters. Are in a recruiting hot bed. Not arguing we are a better job but to call us a joke or say a personal preference makes this embarrassing for UF is retarded. Which I expect from a retar like Dan but not from rational posters.
The more I think about it, it really makes sense for chip to go to a place he is comfortable with. He recruited the area, probably has ties with hs coaches over there. Going to Florida would be starting over. So it’s not embarrassing for Florida and UCLA has a shit ton of potential as a program
I get Texas, but I also dont get Texas Going to Baylor was so dumb with everything surrounding the program. Unless UF has a major sexual scandal that is about to hit not sure thats the best analogy.
I'm not going to his level. UCLA is a good job and can be good. They are 2nd in their own city and in LA. I get this as an Auburn fan. You can still be good, but you're always gonna be #2. UF is at worst tied for 1st in the most talent rich state. It is a personal preference, yes. But it's much like LSU losing out on a 5* WR this week to Kansas bc the player just liked Kansas. That's still embarassing for a top program
Yeah, this isn't an up and coming coach looking at his first major program gig. Chip is making this as much for comfort in the conference and choice of lifestyle, as he is the actual football program. Short of picking UF up and moving it to a major city, I don't think there's a whole lot that could have changed how this shook out.
I get there's a need to pour salt on the wound, but it's not like Chip choosing UCLA is somehow an indictment of UF. Any other coach with the same choice would choose Florida. By every metric it's a better job. The only reason they didn't land Chip is, simply put, he decided he'd rather coach in the Pac12/UCLA. Again, name another coach except maybe one who had a lot of history at UCLA, who would choose them over Florida. It's not like UF didn't or couldn't offer Chip whatever he would have wanted. He made a very situational choice. Nothing more.
The LSU-Kansas comparison is a ridiculous stretch. You went for the receiver in triple coverage down the field instead of hitting the dump down for an easy first down.
