Coachella Thread - Lineups curated by Tik Tok

I'm going Weekend One. Overall fairly happy but not overwhelmed. Headliners great, mid-tier ok, undercard really solid.

Seems like a lot less punk, metal, and other hard rock this year - there's almost always a punk act on the main stage (Social D, Bad Religion, Rancid, etc.) and a few in tents, but just much less this year. Initial take is its pretty balanced day by day - initial thought is Saturday is like an A minus day and Friday and Sunday are each in the B plus range. Not a ton I'm shocked about and there isn't one huge "OMG" act, but I'll have a lot of fun.

Initial list of stuff I'm most interested in:

Friday - Radiohead, the XX, Father John Misty, Banks, Little Dragon, Guided by Voices, King Grizzard and the Lizard Wizard

Saturday - Beyonce, Bon Iver, Schoolboy Q, TDCC, Royksopp, Local Natives, Roisin Murphy, Moderat, the Avalanches, Warpaint, Car Seat Headrest, Mitski, Thundercat

Sunday - Kendrick Lamar, Lorde, Justice, New Order, Future Islands, Hans Zimmer, Kaytranada, Toots and the Maytals, Preoccupations, Ezra Furman

 

Let me know if you have any more GAs - have two buddies that got shut out today, ticket demand was ridiculous.

Went VIP the last two years but switched back to GA this year. I'm gonna miss that easy entrance/exit and random bump-ins with B list celebs, but last year I had issues justifying it. Saturday night during Ice Cube and Disclosure was so packed like sardines in main stage VIP I almost had a panic attack. May have done it again this year but have a couple buddies flying in who wouldn't want to do it, so I went GA again.

 

Also filled our house today, so unless people drop out, we are good to go.

Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival released its 2017 lineup yesterday, an annual tradition that’s reliably followed by a wave of criticism about who is and isn’t playing at the three-day festival. But this year’s backlash against Coachella has taken on a strikingly political tone as recent reports compiled by Uproxx and Afropunk highlight the extreme right-wing activism of the festival’s billionaire owner, Philip Anschutz.

As the head of Anschutz Entertainment Group, or AEG, Anschutz oversees Goldenvoice (the organization that produces Coachella) as well as the Los Angeles Lakers and LA Clippers basketball teams, among other properties. He also has a long history of funneling money into organizations that actively promote LGBTQ discrimination, climate denial, and other causes that stand at odds with the liberal ideals of Coachella headliners like Beyoncé and Radiohead, not to mention the thousands of fans who value the festival’s commitment to inclusivity and free creative expression.

Anschutz’s track record with the LGBTQ community is especially dubious, as he has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to anti-gay organizations and supported anti-gay legislation such as Colorado’s Amendment 2, which sought to enable private property owners and employers to discriminate against homosexuals and lesbians. According to the Washington Post, Anschutz has contributed funds to the Alliance Defending Freedom, the National Christian Foundation, and the Family Research Council, all of which staunchly oppose LGBTQ rights.

But Anschutz’s crusade against gay rights is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of his anti-liberal agenda. As Greenpeace notes, he also supports the quack science of climate-change denial through his foundation and regularly meets to discuss strategy with the Koch brothers, two of the country’s leading anti-environmentalist activists. Other causes Anschutz has leant his support to include weakening of labor unions and challenging evolutionary science.

Many of the artists on Coachella’s lineup would likely be appalled by such activities, but it remains to be seen whether or not they will take any action or respond publicly. Fans, of course, always have the option to simply not buy a ticket.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this guy has no day to day associations with AEG anymore; just owns it - not the CEO, President, or really any operations. Also by "oversees Goldenvoice" it's a very, very small part of their overall portfolio. Oh and "backlash against Coachella" featured an immediate sellout.

Is Collin Brennan the Consequence of Sound writer that hates Coachella? There is someone at CoS that has a major vendetta against Coachella for some reason and I can't remember why.

I love the term "climate denier" as it carries with it all of the anti-intellectual, anti-reason, anti-speech, anti-everything ethos of the modern left. The contempt for individual freedom and thought is palpable throughout this little opinion piece. Makes me even happier to support Coachella now. Fuck you left-wing autocrats.

 

Brennan is presenting all of this as if it is "fact" but this is just typical left-wing smear tactics that the Soviets and Nazis would both be proud of. To the OP - thanks for reminding me why we must combat the radical left every step of the way. There is no greater threat to freedom and self-determination today than the reactionary and authoritarian left and I really hope they keep talking because the more they talk the more they out themselves as the thugs they actually are.

 

FYI that wasn't intended as an indictment of Coachella, but Anschutz is seriously the worst. Also that's quite the hot take ^^

To the left, everything is political and those with dissenting beliefs and thoughts need to be shamed in the public square and punished. Conservatives by and large don't feel this way because we value open inquiry, freedom of thought and debate.
