figured it was coming. Being in the hands of Nestle is a lot more worrisome than, say, Stumptown being run by Peet's
You can buy a burr grinder with an espresso-quality fine setting for waaaaaaaay less than $150. The trick to a good crema is all in the tamp.
In my previous life as a college dropout barista? No. Non-pressurized doubles and a $20 grinder. Granted, our machine was some 20K+ Italian refurbished unit, but honestly I don't think it made a huge difference. In my completely unqualified, totally anecdotal experience, most people have a hard time getting a consistent tamp when they don't have any training and haven't run hundreds of shots a day. Or on the flip side (bad storebought-espresso), the server just doesn't give a shit. Obviously a regular coffee grinder, or a multi-use grinder with a coarse-ish fine ground setting, isn't going to cut it, but you certainly don't need to spend upwards of $500 on one. Unless you like the industrial design, which is a selling point in itself.
I’ve been using an Able Kone filter for a couple weeks now because I’m #CaringAboutTheEnvironment but I am convinced that Chemex filters make a better tasting cup.
Upgraded both our shops to Mahlkonig Peaks. Holy shit they just run circles around every other grinder. Thank God our main roaster got us a deal on them but even then they were so damn expensive.
I just got a little Delonghi prosumer machine for at home espresso shots (I work from home a lot). Pleasantly surprised so far. Still looking at getting a true dual-boiler, adjustable in the next year
Its a local roaster. They are one of the best roasters in the country. They are always traveling and sourcing new beans. Just great guys sourcing incredible coffee. The Ethiopian we have on drip now is really excellent.
i may have asked this already but have any of yall made 'cold brew' style coffee, but rather than let it steep cold, you just leave it room temperature for like 12-36 hrs?
Yeah buy stuff from them. We just got the new Guat in. Using the Nano Chala on drip and when they bring back their 431 online I'd buy some if you have a home espresso setup. That is the best coffee coming out of Brazil every year. https://www.lineageroasting.com/
ok, yeah i have been experimenting for the past few months since my keurig broke (blessing in disguise) and that is, thus far, my favorite method. and yes i also use a french press.
On the verge of pulling the trigger on this machine. Wasn't really looking but a friend offered to buy my current machine. New toys are always fun.
I really wanted to like the Kone filter. I played with grind setting to try and improve the taste, but I just can’t get it to taste as good as the chemex filter. It’s a nice reusable filter that is easy to clean but I’ll be switching back to paper.
Currently have the Quick Mill Vetrano. It can be either plumbed in or from a tank (seems to be the norm these days). I run mine plumbed and would do the same on this one.
Thanks. My wife is a coffee drinker. I am not. The other day, she mentioned needing a newer/nicer coffee maker. I figured i should get a jump on Christmas shopping. Can you coffee guys help?
Idk, this thread is 8 years old and only has 28 posts. These might not be the hardcore coffee guys that would be able to help you out.
For an automatic, get one of these. I have the bonavita 1900, but I do pourover unless there's a crowd. http://www.scaa.org/?page=cert2
I was joking House De Freak actually has this You can get this at the Whole Foods on 280 and its amazing https://counterculturecoffee.com/shop/coffee/hologram
there's an insertion joke in there somewhere but I try to never make the obvious joke... I use an aeropress daily and Jorts does as well. I drink one cup of coffee in the morning and then 2-3 espressos throughout the day from my boss's Verismo. It would probably get to be a bit of a pain if your wife drinks more than a cup or two but otherwise I think it's the best bang for your buck as it makes a great cup of coffee.
Great suggestion. She drinks about two cups in the morning at the house each day. I’ve wondered about getting her a French press, as it gets a lot of recs in this thread.
Comes into a coffee snob thread asking for recs and then acts surprised when he gets cunty recs. Get a French press, but you also need a grinder
I have stopped making coffee at home altogether. Not because I lack supplies. But because there are probably 10 coffee shops in my neighborhood that’d be the best around in most states. So I spend $5-7 every day on coffeee. Generally I drink everything black, but right now I’m enjoying avocado toast for lunch and it is accompanied by a cup of iced sparkling Mint coffee and it’s a real game changer.
You don’t know what you are talking about. Rich Central American beans with chocolatey tones = a light Mint chocolatey taste accomplished purely through finesse.
It’s 90 degrees and I’m sitting on the patio. My apologies for not pulling out my Coleman thermos full of Folgers instant. Sparkling with espresso/coffee is a standard palette cleanser. In this case the sparkling + Mint gives a clean finish, ideal because I’m drinking it with a meal. Idk if you belong in this thread.
